Construction area posterized in black and white
Last time I had an opportunity to observe a construction zone near my place. The sun was providing harsh light but I thought it could be interesting to study high contrast. On the other side I was trying to utilize my compact camera for some time. It has a huge zoom, 30x, and some picture effects on it. I must admit that I enjoy using it... So this series is a product of my toying with a compact, pocket size and 1/2.3" sensor camera...
As I said the light was harsh that day, creating strong shadows and hard contrast. I knew it could work well if I shot the photos in high contrast black and white posterize filter to push the visual story further. It became more like graphic art than a regular photo. I liked how the human forms blended with the geometry!
Zooming in from far away helped me isolate their gestures and create simple compositions. I couldn’t get close physically, but the zoom let me focus on small details and separate the workers from the messy background. It almost looked like stage scenes from a theatre play.
What I liked most was how the zoom made me see differently. I had to find new angles, crop tight, and think more about shapes and contrasts instead of colors. In a way, it felt more creative than using a high-end camera. Limitations can give us new ideas.
This photo series is a reminder for me that even a compact camera can open new doors, provided that I keep looking.
All the best...
