Market Friday at Nakamise the Shopping Street in Sensoji Temple

(Edited)

We recently went to Tokyo, Japan to bask in its blooming cherry blossoms, savor authentic ramen, and visit a few of its graceful temples.

One of them is the Senso-ji Temple which is said to be the oldest in Tokyo.

It is hard to miss the temple with its bright red color and enormous lantern in the center.

This is the outer gate of the Sensoji Temple that you have to pass through to explore the surroundings. The gate is called Kaminarimon. The entrance was so crowded we never had a chance to get a photo under the lantern with just our group.

As we moved up and passed through the gate, we were welcomed by throngs of people, and stalls crowding Nakamise (the street’s name). Truly a very busy and famous shopping street in Tokyo. There may be around 80 stores lining up on both sides of the street. The stores were decorated with cherry blossoms as they are in season at that time.

Most of the shops sell souvenir items like Horifuda or key holders with colorful and varied characters. There are just too many to choose from.

Aside from these key holders, there are a lot more interesting souvenir items and regular goods as well that were offered.

The samurai on horseback

The samurai sword. Too bad we cannot buy one and bring it home because it is not allowed on the plane.

 " "s15.jpg""

 " "s16.jpg""
Japanese dolls, the lucky maneki-neko cats, Japan tourist spots on plates, chopsticks

 " "s12.jpg""

Popular local snacks like rice crackers.

 " "s13.jpg""

 " "S10.jpg""
The iconic traditional Japanese dress _Kimono for the little ones_

And the summer Kimono called Yukata which is made of lighter fabric usually cotton or linen.

At the end of the street is the second gate called Hozomon and to the left is a five-storied pagoda that is closed to the public.

Here's what we bought for souvenir items which we also gave to friends back home all rounded up in dollars or a total of $182.00.

4 Japanese dolls @ 800 yen or about $5.00
4 sets of chopsticks @$18.00
4 shirts @$18.00
6 key holders @$3.00

We tried too, the rice crackers which were sold for $4.80/pack. We liked them all.

It was a crowded walk from Kaminarimon to Hozomon of the Sensoji Temple but it was all part of the excitement and experience.

The chopsticks are totally different from the ones we use at restaurants, they have beautiful designs.

A friend who visited from Japan brought me rice crackers as pasalubong, which I love, and also some cosmetics from Japan. She said just visiting 7-11 in Japan is already worth the trip. hahaha

I loved the rice crackers they have a different taste from ours in the Philippines. We too frequented the 7-11 for cup noodles, the seafood flavor for breakfast before going out for a tour😊.

Whoaaaa I can only see Japanese things in Anime series. I'm just wondering what would be my reaction if ever I saw them in flesh like this. 🤩

The souvenirs are not expensive, especially considering the exchange of USD to Yen, which was 1 USD to 135 Yen on that day. Tokyo is not only beautiful but a very clean city. Thank you for dropping by.

Cute key holders! I keep scrolling down as I wanted to see different chopsticks with different designs but could not see one. 😅 I have been wanting to collect but haven't started just yet. I love using chopsticks especially when eating tsitsirya. 😄

Oh, sorry the chopsticks were in a box at the store but this is how they look. My niece also uses chopsticks for tsitsirya like Doritos😊

What a great walk! So much merchandise! Did you see a lot of the same things, or was each shop very individual? Would you say that it is mainly tourists on this street? Were the prices high compared to other places in Japan or were they about the same?

Some many kitties! :)

I like many of the rice crackers that I have tried. I think the crowds make the experience even more exciting! What an awesome pagoda! Thank you for taking us with you!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to any type of market, or anywhere where you pay money for a service. It can be a museum, a movie theatre, or an auction. Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? We like to compare prices, otherwise, it is just pictures of a market!
  3. Post the pictures! No out-of-focus ones, please! Tell a little bit about the pictures that you post. Having many pictures to scroll through does not make a better post without explanation.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated) If you don't, then #MarketFriday should be your first tag
  5. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
6 You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.
7.#MarketFriday post should be submitted sometime on Friday UTC

The crowd is mostly tourists, of various nationalities and it seemed like everybody was sharing the fun and excitement of being there. The stores carried basically the same items but with some differences in designs. Prices are a bit more expensive here perhaps because the place is popular. The stores in an alley leading to the tallest Buddha in Japan were cheaper by at least 5%. It is where we bought most of the rice crackers we brought home. I have read that the pagoda there is one of the few that are still standing today.
