Malacañang of the North: Presidential Official Residence Turned Into Museum

This is a long overdue post—our visit to Malacañang of the North during our 2023 vacation in the Philippines, my home country.

Malacañang of the North was built in Paoay, Ilocos Norte as a present by then First Lady Imelda Marcos to then President Ferdinand Marcos on his 60th birthday. It served as their official home in the north, where they hosted social functions as well as political events.

The People Power Revolution of 1986 led to the exile of the Marcos family, and the mansion was seized by the government, which converted it into a museum.

The Exterior: Entrance and Grounds

The broad driveway and stone walkways give way to the mansion's two-storey façade with archways, majestic wooden doors, and capiz shell windows that are characteristic of Spanish colonial architecture.

The grounds are stunning, especially with the panoramic view of the Paoay Lake from the veranda and terrace at the back of the mansion. This is also the favorite venue for events and photographs.

The Ground Floor

The ground level of the mansion is a combination of functionality and beauty. It has a spacious reception area with polished stone floors and elegant chandeliers. It opens to the veranda at the back with a Paoay Lake view

The grand narra staircase curves up to the second floor and is considered one of its highlights.

The Second Floor

The second floor is the family's private wing with wide wooden floors. This is where the master bedroom, the children’s bedroom, and cozy sitting rooms with vintage furniture are located.

I love the breathtaking view of the peaceful Paoay Lake from this wide balcony. This is my favorite spot on the second floor.

I also enjoyed looking at the photographs and memorabilia that lined the hallways. It gave me a glimpse into the private and political life of the Marcos family.

If you happen to visit Ilocos Norte, it would be nice to include in your itinerary a visit to the mansion and get a glimpse into Philippine History.

Thank you for reading.
