A visit to a convict era Prison

Good Morning.. my friends. Today, I am going to bring you on a tour to Fremantle Prison here in Perth. I took the public train system to get to Fremantle.

Frematle Prison

This prison was built when the UK started to have too many convicts and wanted a place to send them to. It was to this new land. This prison was built in 1850. Close to 200 years ago.

It's not always get a chance to visit prisons. I've always had this bucket list of visiting a prison to tour around what a prison looks like.

I bought a ticket, and it was the last you,r and it was only the four of us, not including the guide. Before entering, she told us that we should not be recording everything on video, but some parts can be video with no problem, so I took lots of pictures while I was there.

Most of the pictures here were taken using my DSLR camera. I brought this monster of a camera all around Perth. The last time I did that was while I was in Taiwan many years ago. DSLR cameras are bulky but have large sensors and can take professional-standard photos.

This prison was almost torn down, but luckily, it wasn't and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. History should be preserved so future generations can understand what went on to build Australia.

The whole complex, from what the guide said, was all built brick by brick by the convicts who were sent here in the year 1850. This prison remained active till 1991. The earlier conditions here were inhuman, and 40 prisoners have been executed here by hanging. You can check out the room later where the prisoners were hanged.

There is a hotel where you can stay for a night. Converted from the women's prison section to a hotel. There are tunnel and night ghost tours here, too.

This was where the cooking took place. The sweaty men are cooking food for the other inmates. Water was a luxury, so most of the inmates did not have much opportunity to wash themselves,s and most had to do their business inside a bucket. One inmate was then in charge of clearing the feces inside the buckets.

A bench with an arrow. What's the meaning of the arrow? Commonwealth.

The toilets. The ceiling is caged to make sure no inmates would be able to escape easily.

The earlier section of the prison. Scary times. The rooms here were overcrowded. Some inmates poured urine from the upper floors, and there were no suicide nets to catch anyone who fell down.

The prison complex still looks in good shape.

The compound where everyone gathered during their leisure. Australian summers are no joke, and imagine a point in time when the summer sun roasted the rowdy individuals at the compound.

The workout area. This was where everyone worked out. I can imagine how tall these individuals can be. Throughout the whole trip that I was in Perth, most were at least 170 cm to 2 metres. Most males are body builder fit.

The prison execution area. This was where the inmates who were on death row were hanged. This is the room where it all happened. The rope had specific dimensions for each person, and beneath it was a drop of six feet. 40 inmates have been executed in this very room.

One of the prison cells. At a point of time, it was quite inhuman and more than 5 inmates were put into a room like this with no proper sanitation.

The newer section of the prisons - This newer section had the suicide net. This was to prevent the inmates from jumping down.

The guide who was here.

She was so passionate about her work that she spent a lot of time talking about everything that was there.

Artwork by an inmate

Imagine so much talent wasted in the life of crime. He could have been a successful artist.

The names of the female inamtes staying here and the crimes they had committed. Some names have sentences that still are active till today.

Thank you very much for reading this post.
