IN VENEZUELA YOU COOK ON BRICKS /EN VENEZUELA SE COCINA SOBRE LADRILLOS

Yes, bricks in Venezuela are still used for construction, but lately they have acquired a new utility, because of what Plato, the Greek philosopher, described as “The true creator is necessity, which is the mother of our invention.”
It turns out that now the traditional kitchen has been partially replaced by the home-made or brick kitchen.
Previously, gas distribution companies for domestic use were private. When a person ran out of gas, they called the company. The next day the gas truck arrived. A company worker uninstalled the empty cylinder and replaced it with a full one.

Now the company is managed by the state. You have to hand the cylinder to the person in charge, pay immediately and wait one to three months (sometimes more) for the full one to be delivered.
The other option: buy it "under the table" from individuals. The smallest bottle is currently "trading" - yes, like the stock on the Stock Market - at $7. With a basic monthly salary of $5... You can imagine... That's why gas can be saved to the extreme by cooking with electricity, but since electric stoves are out of reach of almost all budgets, you acquire the resistance that they sell. as a spare and the kitchen is "assembled" inside a brick.
The brick kitchen cannot completely replace the traditional one due to long power outages. They work together, as a team, sharing space in humble kitchens and also in less humble ones. Fast-cooking things are prepared on the gas stove and slower ones - for example, softening beans - on the brick stove. To save gas!
In order to survive here, those of us who have not left have had to invent new ways to do things with fewer and fewer resources, but... we continue inventing and we continue surviving.

@luisfe your cooking on bricks reminded me of my student youth, in our dormitory kettles were prohibited and to make tea we used a homemade water boiler made from two matches and two razor blades, with wires hooked up...
Take two safety razor blades. A wire is attached to each of them for plugging into an outlet. Matches are placed between the blades and serve as insulators. We fasten the blades together with threads. All. We take a glass of water, lower the boiler into it and plug it into the network.
Wow, @irvet ...it never would have occurred to me...how clever. Thanks for answering
@luisfe the main thing is that you cannot add salt to the water, it will cause a short circuit))
Good morning @irvet. It caught my attention that in water alone there was no risk of short circuit - water being an electrical conductor - but in salt water there was. I wanted to know why. So I Googled "electrically conductive salt" and found this curiosity - and its explanation at the "atomic" level- : "salt like solid sodium chloride does not conduct electric current, but molten or in solution does. In this type of substances, the electric current is not carried by electrons, the presence of ions that can move more or less freely is required for the electric current to pass through"
Super interesting
