From what I understand, he will try to play survival mode, because every time a new season starts, all cards can be reused.
I play most of the season in Modern and Wild while playing only my extra cards in survival mode during the season when I have time after tournaments and ranked. But in the last day I use my full collection in Survival mode since I'm safely on leaderboard in other 2 formats.
