Some Skills And Tips Needed For A Successful Marketing Career
Warmest greetings everyone and welcome my blog again. We're already in a new month, February and I wish it be a good one for all of us.
One way or the other most we all get involved in one form of marketing activity. When you tell your friends or family members about that new eatery you visited, the tasty food you ate and how you were impressed by their services encouraging them to try visiting or you tell someone about the beauty of Hive and equally encourage them to join, what you just did is marketing called word - of - mouth marketing.
Having been in marketing for some years now, I've come to understand that for one to succeed, you need to be equipped with some certain skills. which include;
- Communication skill
Being a marketer you are going to meet and interact with people everyday both in your organization and in the field so you need to be a good listener and communicator. You need to be able to present your company, products and services to your prospects and clients in a very clear and understanding way so they can convert.
While engaging with clients, prospects, you need to give them attention so you will be able to pick up their pain points or complaints, suggestions or commendations which you will refer back to your organization.
You should also be mindful of your body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions as they all play a role in communication.
Apart from verbal communication being skilled in written communication is equally important and this has to do with writing reports, presentations, clear and concise emails etc.
- Patience
There are some clients that will test your patience to the highest limit to know if you possess such skill before they can do business with you. I had prospected one of our clients for three years before he finally did business with us. In all of these years he will give me appointment and when I go he will cancel it after I might have waited for hours. But because I knew that getting the business will help move my sales, I was ready and patient to play along and today I'm enjoying it.
- Problem solving skill:
A marketer is a problem solver. While discussing with clients, you need to be able to identify the various problems - personal in or business they might have so you can analyze them and come up with creative solutions which can be in form of products, services, ideas, suggestions or advice.
- Creativity perks
Marketing is all about creativity - you should be able to think outside the box - brainstorm and come up with new, innovative and workable ideas, strategies to help for your marketing activities.
In addition to these, one needs to be strategic, organized, and able to think on their feet including ability to work well under pressure and meeting deadlines.
Also there is need to be skilled in digital marketing which has to do with search engine optimization, SEO, email marketing social media marketing etc., project management and data analysis
Here Are Some Tips To Help You Start In Your Marketing Journey
- Love your job
If you want to succeed in marketing or any field of career you find yourself, you've got to love your job. It's just sad that some people do not love their jobs they are just there to get by or because of their paycheck, but hey that's not the way to go. Be proud and passionate about your job, give it your all.
Commit your time into it - market and continue marketing using all avenues - online, offline, phone calls, messages, email, etc.
Just a reminder; you are not just working for the company alone but for yourself too.
- Read and Learn
There's this saying that "reading maketh a man" so it's an important tip to note. You need to read and be well informed about your company's policies, mission statement etc, including market trends, competitor's offerings, government policies and other useful publications needed for your marketing activities.
Be curious and open to learning new things, attend marketing seminars, workshops and the likes.
- Maintain ethics and be professional
As a marketer, you are representing your organization, you are the company the customers see so you should build a good reputation, always act with integrity and honesty. Stay ethical and professional in your marketing activities.
- Build connections and referrals
Everyone you meet along your way is a potential customer so do not fail to grab the opportunity to market your products and services. Continue to talk to people because you wouldn’t know who might give you the lead to your success or even send you referrals.
Here's my story, the first big advertising job I landed in my first year at my current job was through referral. After prospecting the man, he told me categorically that he wasn't interested but promised to refer me to others who might be, which he did.
That job tripled my sales and I sent him an appreciation package.
On a side note, endeavor to appreciate those who send referrals to you, it is important to building more connections and referrals too.
Lastly always celebrate your wins, no matter how little.
I would have loved to continue with more tips but I have to end it here.
Thank you for reading do visit again.

Really great post fam 👏👏👏
This part is so true, sadly I think most people just get a job for the money and not because they love it or because they like the company they are working for. Hopefully one day this will change and people will learn to do what they love to do.
You know times are hard and getting a new job may not be so easy so some people hold onto the jobs they have so they can have something to take care of themselves and loved ones, even though they may not really like it.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The importance of communication can never be overemphasized, it is the starting point of any marketing endeavours. It goes beyond just verbal language, body gestures, tone are also means of non-verbal communication that can be used in fostering a successful marketing career.
