As Bad As Burnt - LOH 207

There's this particular type of beans in my place that usually takes time to cook. It's called Cowpeas or African black beans but the local name is "Akidi", very sweet and highly nutritious.

Cooking it takes hours, sometimes you have to pre-cook it the night before with enough water and leave it till the following day. By then it would have softened, and you'll now complete the cooking.

Due to the length of time it takes to cook, it usually consumes cooking gas, which is rather expensive here so the next best alternative is to make use of either local stove with charcoal, firewood or hot plate, depending on the type one has. Mine is hot plate and using will mean having to wait for whenever the power distribution company decides to restore power, which is usually in the night.
So that will have me staying up late just to cook my favorite akidi using the hot plate, ah! serious wahala 🙆 (exclamation)

If you've made use of this hot plate before, I'm sure you'll understand why I exclaimed. The wonders this hot plate has performed with some people's cooking pots is enough to crown it "the best pot burner", lol. If you're the type who usually put food on the fire and then go on to attend to other things, please, this hot plate is not for you. I'm saying this because you might come back to meet a burnt offering just like I did few months ago 🤣.

This particular night I had carried my tired and sleepy self to prepare akidi,. As it was cooking I got busy with my phone to prevent sleep from getting a hold of me, story for the gods, hehehe. I was also checking it intermittently.

Everything was moving on fine until nature decided to take its course, you know nature can't be cheated. Checking on the akidi one more time, I saw that it was softening so I got the ingredients ready to add after the next check. I then went back to my watch zone, picked up my phone to continue with the thing I was drafting but nature said no, sleep you must so I surrendered myself to it's warm embrace and it took me to dreamland.

I can't recall how long I slept, all I could remember was waking up to the crackling sound and smell of something that was burning. I exclaimed "ei! my akidi has burnt!" and immediately the sleep cleared from my eyes. I rushed to the kitchen, it was filled with smoke, almost choking me. I managed to turn off the hot plate and then set the pot down. After a few minutes, I uncovered it to see more than half of the content completely charred. I felt very sad because that was to be my meal for some days, and blamed myself sleeping off. What a wasted effort!.

Well the deed has been done and there was no need crying over spilt milk so I gently scooped the unburnt part into another pot, poured water in the burnt pot, switched off the bulb, or rather light and went to bed.

I completed the cooking of the saved part the next day. I'm sure you want to know how it tasted. Well it was as bad as burnt but I still managed to eat it, after all there are some parts of the world where the people intentionally burn their foods, lol.
