A Necessary Change! - LOH 190
Hello amazing ladies, welcome to my blog. I'm glad to be here to make my submission on the interesting topics of this week brought to us by @ifarmgirl.
One of the natural endowments I have is a beautiful hair - black, full and long, that got to my shoulder length. It was always the cynosure of all eyes especially whenever it's permed and styled into waves or curls. I could remember when I was in higher institution, one of my old course mates walked up to me to admire my hair and after that asked how much it costs to make my hair, so he can give me the money, hehehe.
I love my hair and was careful with the type of hair care products I use and the salons I visit. I have a soft and sensitive scalp so I do more of perming and would occasionally braid it. When I started perming my hair, I was using Venus relaxer - regular pack plus Soulmate shampoo, conditioner and hair cream. I also do apply shea butter on it. All through the time I used Venus, my hair was shiny black, full with no breakages or other sorts of hair issues. But I had one challenge with it, it was damn too hot for my hair, lol. Anytime I was to retouch my hair, I'll go very early in the morning before the sun comes up so I won't feel much of the hotness when it's applied, hehehe.
I continued using it until I couldn't bear the hotness anymore so I switched to Dark and Lovely Kit. It was good too but expensive for my level then. Imagine using one pack of it just once, that's how full my hair was.
I contemplated going back to using Venus relaxer but the thought of the hotness wouldn't let me. My hair stylist suggested that I use UB relaxer as it was a good product too. I bought the big size so that it could be used twice or thrice, if possible. If only I knew that it was going to be worse than Venus, hehehe. I didn't bother using it again after the first time and I gave it away.
I tried other relaxers like Profectiv Mega growth and finally Mamiya organics no-lye. I would buy the pack of eight sachets and use it throughout the year. But none of these relaxers gave my hair what it needed. Infact using them was the mistake I made as my hair lost it's texture, was thinning and breaking, the color changed too. Even the regular treatments weren't helping at all. It got to a point that most people who knew how my hair was then upon seeing it would ask why I cut it.
So two years ago, I decided not to apply relaxer again and but to go natural. I thought of cutting it at first but my family wouldn't support it. So I devised a way to groom the hair to natural without actually cutting it. I would braid it, weave and then use with wigs. I continued that way until gradually the hair started to regrow and the permed ones were given way. When I was sure that the hair has regrown enough, I had to trim it, thereby cutting off the remaining permed ones.
Finally I was happy to have achieved my goal without raising any dust in my family, hehehe.
Although I had fears of how it would turn out or whether it would even fit me, but I was ready to accept it however it was. But surprisingly, it was a perfect fit, infact it made me look younger and prettier, hehehe. Wow, I was beyond happiness and wouldn't stop showing it off.
Of a truth, my new hair style really surprised some people. I remember the first time I posted it on my WhatsApp status, my close friend called asking why I had to cut my long hair. Not only her, I was always getting the question
why did you cut your beautiful long hair?
Even my former hair stylist was shocked to see that I succeeded in grooming my hair to natural because she said that I wouldn't be able to do it knowing how much I loved my permed hair. If only they knew that the long hair wasn't longing again, lol. 😅
For now I'm still grooming the hair and have no plans for either cutting it or going back to perming it. I love it natural and will continue to nurture it to get get back it's former texture and color. It's already black and full now, it's left for it to grow longer.
Change is the only thing that is constant in this life, every other thing, including humans change. There comes a time in one's life when they desire to change, with regards to their interests, needs, lifestyle and so on.
So grooming my hair from permed to natural, not permed was a part of change for me. It changed my looks and lifestyle too. When I was carrying permed hair, I would always ensure that I go to the salon bi-weekly to get it washed, rolled, then I will enter the dryer for it to get dried and finally styled however I wanted it. Then every three to four months, I'll equally go for retouching so it continues to look beautiful and glowy. This was a routine.
But now that change has occurred, all these routines are a thing of the past. Although I still go to the salon bi-weekly, but it is only for braiding or plaiting. I now wash the hair myself and apply the treatments too. My hair cream has changed too, I now use more of shea butter and home made coconut oil. I had to learn making coconut oil because I knew it will help restore some of the nutrients which the relaxers have destroyed in my hair, scalp and skin too.
I found out that my hair has lost the touch of life in it and I took a drastic decision to stop applying relaxer and go natural. It wasn't so an easy task as I had to stick to using wigs most of the time, which was usually uncomfortable, or braiding. But I persevered because I was aiming for something and today, I'm happy I did. I look at my hair and new look now and I can't love them less, hehehe.

Your long hair was really beautiful too bad you had to let it go.
On a serious note, this natural looks really good on you.

You look beautiful with both the long hair and short hair! That journey of switching from permed hair to Virgin hair was not easy but you did it with great determination! Great job, Sis!

Awwnnn, thanks so much for the kind words.
It looks great that way, and I'm glad you moved away from relaxers. There has been a lot of recent studies about their long term, harmful effects.
Yes, it's not 100% safe.
Wow so pretty 😘
