A Lost Opportunity To Learn Crocheting! - WE #207

Starting something new is quite good but following through with it might is excellent, but sometimes we may fall behind along the way.
I've had the opportunity of trying out things, some of which I still do today and others have been swept under the carpet, lol. You know there's this excitement that comes with learning or trying out new things, but after some time, it just wanes off. This has happened to me several times, I just hope to find a way to stop it.

I belong to this Facebook group that promotes skills acquisition. There are so many skills both digital and non digital that one can learn, from bead making to crocheting/knitting, perfumery, copywriting, graphic design, cake making, tie and die etc. Trainings were held online via telegram and WhatsApp. Some are free while some other are paid.

So in January 2022 during the IPOB sit at home crisis that happened in my city, I decided to use the that period to learn something new and the one that appealed to me more was the crocheting/knitting class as I remembered how I was making small purses and table mat then from the basic training I got from high school and I saw it as an opportunity to refresh my memory and to learn more.

The training held on WhatsApp and you can only join using the invite link. It was an interactive and practical based class and the trainer was good at her skills as she used both images, videos and notes to teach. She also showed us different crocheting projects she has handled and my interest was piqued the more, lol. After each class assignment was given and it was compulsory for each trainee to submit. That was to show the other one if we were getting along with what was taught.

Before the training started, we were to get the tools needed for the class like, yarn/wool, crochet hook, scissors, tape measure, stitch marker, yarn needle, needle, thread, knitting pins, etc.
I managed to buy some of the tools that I could find and even asked mom for her knitting pins since I couldn't find them in the stores. Mom learnt crocheting and knitting those days and she has beautiful projects that are still in use till date.

Some of my tools, I don't even know where I kept the crochet hooks and the other wools again, lol

We started from the basics which are the crocheting terminologies, identifying the various patterns for crocheting then to how to tie a slip knot, foundation chains, single crochet. We also moved to how to make triple crochet, double crochet, half double crochet etc. Like I said before, after each class we were given assignment to submit before the next class. I was so excited about the training and I tried all that were taught.

Some practicals I did

Work in progress

Infact I was practically crocheting anywhere I found convenient just like in the first image. Serious student indeed, , hehehe.

The trainer was so kind and patient with the slow learners like me, lol, and she would always commend us for our efforts in submitting our practicals while pointing out mistakes followed by corrections.

Along the line, normal activity resumed in my city and we were able to go back to work so it wasn't so easy for me to meet up with the trainings again due to other engagements. I backslided, sort of and that's how it ended.
It was really a sad one that I couldn't complete this training, that was me missing a very viable, high yielding skill that will turn to another stream of income for me.

With the excitement and zeal with which I joined the class, I would have at least perfected in the art of crocheting to some extent and by now making beautiful crochet projects like @wongi and @abenad, lol. Who knows I might have even been training some other people by now too. I understood that crocheting needs commitment, dedication and constant practice, but I was facing time constant then.

Although it's said that opportunity lost can not be recovered, I didn't lose completely as I gained from the other things that I left crocheting for. You know there's always a forgone alternative in life.

I appreciate your visit to my blog, would love to see you again. Thank you.

The truth is that crocheting needs full undivided attention if you want to make it into a source of income.

The stress involved is not one you can joggle with other work related activities.

Good news is that you can find a coach and pick up where you left off😁

Oh I see, but it’s not completely lost since there are even more easier ways to learn crocheting now.

Yeah, as the wave of life is pushing me now, I doubt if I can sit at a place and try it again.
I appreciate your contribution.

Hehe, I bet you would have😄. And one beautiful thing about crocheting is the fact that one can always return to it whenever they have free time. It's an art that requires full attention, especially at the beginning phase, and I'm happy you could realize this even after the little training.

Ps: also, if you want to develop better, you should try using bigger hook sizes like 4.0mm and above because the small hook sizes can get really frustrating sometimes 🙃

Exactly, the interest to learn was there but the full attention was missing, hehehe. I just hope one day I'll be able to.

You're very right, I was just struggling with the hook, lol.
I tried getting the big sizes here but none could be found, only the small size because that's what is mostly used in secondary schools. The other alternative was to get the complete set online but it didn't work out.

I appreciate your wonderful contribution and encouragement.

I just realized that buying the bigger hook sizes singly can go for as high as 3000 naira.
