Cine TV Contest #131: Reminiscing on Gwara-Gwara With Mr Bones
It's quite ironic how I didn't even understood most of the jokes in Mr Bones (2001) when I was younger, but I'd laugh anyway. Mr Bones wasn't just depending on sarcastic words or comedies, even the gestures were hilarious and as a kid, watching people fall, or run away screaming after seeing an elephant or snake was enough to make me laugh.
A movie that completely brings me back to childhood is Mr Bones (2001).
Mr. Bones is a story of this wild, completely clueless and uncivilised traditional healer named Mr. Bones, played by the legendary Leon Schuster. His mission was to find the long-lost heir to the Kuvuki tribe’s throne and bring him back home. Turns out, the so-called heir is a rich, flashy, golf-playing playboy who has zero interest in abandoning his celebrity lifestyle and leading a tribe. What follows is just crazy scenes that causes you to laugh while gasping for air, golf balls flying where they shouldn’t and Mr. Bones arm getting where it shouldn't.
Now, let me tell you why this movie is gold for me. I remember watching it with my best friend then, who lived beside our house, we both were laughing so hard that my mum would yell “reduce the volume!” from the kitchen. But how could we? Mr. Bones was busy dipping hands into an elephant, plotting how to kidnap "my prince" and not to mention the pig that was thrown from an helicopter. Every scene in Mr Bones is pure comedy.
And let’s talk about Mr. Bones himself. That man was a walking disaster. Every time he tried to do something, he somehow made it ten times worse. He was unserious yet so confident in his nonsense. His interpretation of the modern world was pitiful yet hilarious to watch.
I love the part when he was younger and he got the gift of interpreting the bones, how they still managed to make that part funny? God knows. Or the scene where that black guy (the supposed prince's friend), pooed in people's home, inside their cooking pot just because he saw TOILET not knowing the original was actually TO LET.
I could go on and on, but, thinking about it now, Mr. Bones was the kind of movie that could never be made today. It was loud, unserious, and very unrealistic. These gen-z kids would say, "it's not woke". 🤣
Even now, if I see a random meme from the movie, I immediately go back to those childhood days.
So yeah, Mr. Bones is the pick for me. And no matter how much time has passed, it's still a good reminder of the beautiful childhood we had.

This was one of the movies that made me laugh really hard that my ribs began to hurt. I can't even count how many times I watched this movie because of how excited it made me feel. Really a great movie.
