Encantado de estar de nuevo esta semana para compartir en mi querida comunidad de Motherhood, deseando que todas las madres, padres e hijos que hacen vida por aquí puedan estar muy bien al lado de sus seres queridos. Soy un orgulloso papá de dos hijos adolescentes a los que amo con todo mi corazón. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una de las cosas que más me gustaba hacer con ellos cuando eran pequeños: leerles cuentos.

Nice to be back again this week to share in my cherished Motherhood community, wishing all the mothers, fathers and children that make life around here can be very well next to the ones they love. I am a proud dad of two teenage sons that I love with all my heart. Today I want to share with you one of the things I most enjoyed doing with them when they were little: reading them stories.

Desde que nacieron, les leía cuentos todas las noches. Me encantaba ver sus caras de asombro, curiosidad y emoción cuando escuchaban las historias, la mayoría eran cuentos clásicos de Walt Disney de princesas, dragones, piratas, animales y aventuras. Les encantaban Caperucita Roja, Los Tres Cerditos, La Bella Durmiente o El Gato con Botas, pero también les leía cuentos modernos. Aunque hoy me siento feliz de haberlo hecho, la verdad es que no fue fácil, ya que era una lucha conmigo mismo, que llegaba a casa agotado después de un día de trabajo, pero ver sus caritas me daba fuerzas para hacerlo con alegría.

From the time they were born, I read bedtime stories to them every night. I loved to see their amazed, curious and excited faces when they listened to the stories, most of them were classic Walt Disney tales of princesses, dragons, pirates, animals and adventures. They loved Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, Sleeping Beauty or Puss in Boots, but I also read them modern stories. Although today I am happy to have done it, to be honest it was not easy, as it was a struggle with myself, coming home exhausted after a day's work, but seeing their little faces gave me the strength to do it with joy.

Hoy, después de tanto tiempo, puedo ver los frutos, porque leerles cuentos les trajo muchos beneficios, tanto cognitivos como emocionales. Por ejemplo: algo que les puedo decir es que les ayudó mucho en el lenguaje, en el caso de mi hija Marialex, cuando fue a su primer día de clases las maestras me preguntaban de dónde éramos, je je, porque mi hija habla diferente en su acento y en sus palabras cuando se expresa. Aprendieron nuevas palabras y formas de comunicarse. Por ejemplo, recuerdo que mi hijo me preguntó qué significaba la palabra "zorro" cuando le leí El Principito, y le expliqué que era un animal parecido al perro, pero más pequeño y astuto.

Today, after so much time, I can see the fruit, because reading stories to them brought them many benefits, both cognitively and emotionally. For example: something I can tell you is that it helped them a lot in language, in the case of my daughter Marialex, when she went to her first day of school the teachers asked me where we were from, heh heh, because my daughter speaks differently in her accent and in her words when she expresses herself. They learned new words and ways to communicate. For example, I remember my son asked me what the word "fox" meant when I read him The Little Prince, and I explained that it was an animal similar to a dog, but smaller and more cunning.

Todo ello contribuyó a estimular su imaginación y creatividad. Inventaban sus propias historias, dibujaban a sus personajes favoritos, se hacían preguntas sobre el mundo y buscaban soluciones a los conflictos. Por ejemplo, recuerdo que mi hijo Alexander me contó una vez que era un pirata que navegaba por los siete mares y que tuvo que enfrentarse a un monstruo marino que le robó su tesoro. Hoy, recordando todo esto, es imposible que mi corazón se alegre y ruede una lágrima, momentos que nunca volverán, pero me siento muy feliz de haberlos disfrutado al máximo.

All of this helped stimulate their imagination and creativity. They made up their own stories, drew their favorite characters, asked questions about the world and sought solutions to conflicts. For example, I remember my son Alexander once told me that he was a pirate who sailed the seven seas, and that he had to face a sea monster who stole his treasure. Today, remembering all this, it is impossible for my heart to rejoice and roll a tear, moments that will never come back, but I am very happy to have enjoyed them to the fullest.

Leer a mis hijos me ayudó mucho a transmitirles valores, principios, actitudes y hábitos. Ahora que son adolescentes, siguen leyendo y disfrutando con los libros. Tienen sus propios gustos, intereses y preferencias, pero también les gusta compartir conmigo sus opiniones, sus recomendaciones y sus emociones. Leerles cuentos ha sido una forma de crear un vínculo especial con ellos, de conocerles mejor, de educarles y de divertirnos juntos. Los animo a leer cuentos a sus hijos, nietos, sobrinos. Les aseguro que es una experiencia maravillosa que nunca olvidarán.

Reading to my children helped me a lot to transmit values, principles, attitudes and habits. Now that they are teenagers, they continue to read and enjoy books. They have their own tastes, interests and preferences, but they also like to share with me their opinions, their recommendations and their emotions. Reading them stories was a way to create a special bond with them, to get to know them better, to educate them and to have fun together. I encourage you to read stories to your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. I assure you that it is a wonderful experience they will never forget.
