Memoir Monday - It all started with Two Small Sparks

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ Small Decision #1 ♥

The year was 2015, around six months before I became of retirement age, and when it was time to say goodbye to the working world.

My son suggested that I should consider turning our garden cottage where Oupa Malan and Ouma Lily used to live, into an Airbnb.

He explained briefly, and I did a little research.

Even though we're on the outskirts of Durban, which not only was a great tourism destination, we're also central to many lively business, industrial, and commercial areas, as well as sports stadia.

I put the idea to Arthur, flippantly saying all we needed were bookings of at least four nights per month, which would be close to what we would earn if we had a tenant who could possibly become troublesome.
The Squatter's Act in SA is a big headache for many landlords, a nightmare my late brother had to endure the last few months of his life; he was only 42!

We were both working, hubby had a lucrative career, we had nothing to lose, so why not give it a go, even if it was just for a couple of months?

The cottage was well-maintained, with quaint furniture, so all we had to initially invest in was good linen, and revamp the decor. I took a couple of photos, registered on Airbnb, working in the evenings to set up our listing on their website before going live.

We I've never looked back; what started as an Airbnb eventually turned into a registered BnB, thanks to a local BnB owner who 'kindly' warned me that I needed special consent from our local authority.

Our bookings exceeded my expectations by far, and we certainly did not want to face having to pay a fine, so we complied!

The envious lady unknowingly did us a favour, as I then registered on other online booking sites, and our average occupancy rate increased.

This spur-of-the-moment decision made a huge positive impact on our lives after retiring, not just financially, but also enriched our lives with fabulous guests, many of whom return year after year.

Lily's Cottage has maintained the highest online rating in our area for the last couple of years and is now the preferred provider for some of the big motoring companies who send their staff to a local training centre.

I will always be thankful for Airbnb which was the springboard for our 'side-hustle', but most of our guests now are returning guests who book directly.

Not a bad outcome for a spur-of-the-moment decision!

I am very proud of our Lily's Cottage, which also has become an absolute lifesaver since losing my Arthur.

(っ◔◡◔)っ ♥ Small Decision #2 ♥

The same son, who knows I enjoy talking writing, again nudged me to join a blogging site where I could write about any topic under the sun, and earn Crypto, which sounded really exciting, but I knew nothing about it. I finally had the chance to become part of this new exciting world of Crypto;)

I joined Steemit in July 2017, jumped in with gusto, had no strategy, just blogged on impulse. I then moved over to Hive in March 2020.

This Crypto was something that just sat in my wallet, until we had a harsh Covid lockdown, and we had to close our BnB doors for around six weeks.

We were both in retirement, but still had the same big overheads,

That is when the reality dawned that this Crypto was not just Monopoly money, it was for real, and it saved us during that difficult period.

Hive also has been a lifesaver since losing my Arthur, as I've been able to deal with my loss through writing, and for that, I am immensely thankful!

I hope you enjoyed reading about these two small decisions that changed my life in a big way, my response to @ericvancewalton's question for Memoir Monday - Week 4 (3/31 to 4/6):

What’s a small decision you made in your life that ended up having a big impact on your life?

Life can be tough, but so amazing as well. I certainly have been blessed with these suggestions by my son, as both are helping me through those difficult days. Many of our returning guests become like family. Our current guests from Belgium come annually for around 2 weeks; a South African girl whose family live close by. I've seen their son grow from a tiny young boy to a wonderfully talented young teen. He's brought his violin so I hear him practice every morning, and he promised to give me a concert tomorrow. She came to see me in the Netherlands so that was very special, they were very fond of Arthur.
I am blessed indeed with my Hive friends, especially you and Marian xxx

Oh yes, you have some wonderful children, and they are real blessings to you. It sounds like you have built up a local and international family with your Airnb and that's great to know, as the seem to be genuine people, especially the one that visited you in the Netherlands. I hope that the violin concert will be great, and I know that you will enjoy it.
Thank you for the kind compliment and I compliment, and we are sure that there are many others that love you just as well.

All blessings and our !LUV to you!

The BnB certainly exceeded our expectations, we have been truly blessed with fabulous guests, Lily's Cottage charms them all!
I also have the best two sons I could ever have wished for.
And...the concert was delightful, just pretend I don't hear the odd off-key note, but he's going to be very good!
A wonderful weekend for you and Marian, it's pouring here, and they're warning of possible flooding tomorrow, let's hope it's not that bad.

I think that the owners of Lily's Cottage were more loved, and that always makes a big difference. We have stayed at some horrid BnB's over time and that's why we were so impressed with the Avalon Springs units that you have so kindly gifted us.
We also think that your boys are heroes.
Shame, kudos to him for trying, as so many don't, and we really hope that he will turn out to be great musician.
Wind gusts running here at 80kpm the whole day and still even now, so yes when it moves on there's going to be big trouble down the coastal lines. So, we hope that you will stay safe and please take care.

Great story, so happy about your bnb, side hustle, sometimes all it takes is a few small actions to get the ball rolling.

Did you you know there is so much confusion about SA? I am in SA (south Australia) and we get mixed up all the time.

Have a great day.

Thank you @ctrpch, I've been blessed that my son made those suggestions.

I often wonder about just saying SA, but I'm not very proud of my country, at the moment, for various reasons!

Thank you for taking the time to read, have a great day. Bedtime here in my SA ;)

Like you, I am more grateful every day for the decision to be at Hive. I retired and was at home doing nothing for myself. My daughter motivated me to write and I am a different person. I thank you also for the help. You have proven to overcome the obstacles. Keep on keeping on. I thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Best regards.😘

I am so glad to hear that Hive has also helped you. People don't realize retirement's impact on one, especially if you enjoyed your job and the people you worked with.
Thank you for your insight and encouragement always xxx

Oh lord, I clicked on the link and now am fawning over the pictures. The cottage is so lovely, @lizelle! <3 I mean, I already knew that from the pictures you post on here, but it's so so pretty. Hoping to visit one day.
I'm glad you made those two choices. Really. :)

PS: Malan is such a beautiful name <3

Hi, my friend, I'm so glad you paid Lily's Cottage a visit ;) My Dad Malan was a gentle giant, a talented musician who played many instruments, also played in a band during the grand ballroom era. Both he and Mom Lily are real legends.
I am so thankful to my son for both of those suggestions.
What a treat it would be to have you staying here xxx

When I think of it, I have been immensely blessed throughout my life with the people I call family, and with my friends. My older son sparked both these ideas, he has always been wise beyond his age, a real thinker.
Thank you for Memoir Monday my friend, such a great way to bank store our memories!

That cabin for rent was a great idea, I have often thought that it must be interesting to have a place to rent to tourists. Thank you very much for sharing dear @lizelle . A big hug from Maracay.

I love your stories about your airbnb! Now I know the origins. How simple, and how fortuitous!

fortuitous

What a lovely descriptive word @owasco! And it still is. In more ways than one!

Yes, it really was very simple, except for having to apply for special consent from our local authority to run a business from home, which was quite a bit of work, but we still continued on Airbnb.
It depends on one's local authority.
Hubby designed the cottage with its unique layout, everyone falls in love with it.

I'm sure it's very special to you, and so to your guests, because your parents (Ouma and Oupa are what your kids called them, right?) lived in it. I know your photos make the entire place look dreamy! To have you as a host? Even better!
