Welcome to Aubigny-sur-Nère ~ in beautiful France 🇫🇷 Also known as the city of the stuarts. Come and explore this cute little town together with me. We walk through the main street and see some half-timbered houses that were rebuilt after a fire in 1512. Source

Let’s start our walk through this enchanting little town. We stopped here on our journey north from southern France last month for a walk and a drink en route.

Aubigny-sur-Nère is worth visiting as it appears as an open air museum. This little French Heritage town is situated at the crossing of Berry and Sologne and stands as a witness of the Scottish ruling which has forged its history. It is so original that it will not let you indifferent. source

As you can see immediately around you wandering the Rue des Dames, the main street through the town, you are surrounded by the 16th century half-timbered houses and hints to the Scottish past all scattered around. Like this well known red telephone box you see a lot in the UK 🇬🇧. The contrast is so enchanting it makes visiting this town even more exciting.

As we walk further we see little local shops in the half-timbered houses. They are so well preserved, a joy to look at.

Little terraces to enjoy a drink in front of an art gallery and very special house.

It is the François 1er House. If you look very closely you see some awesome woodcarvings in the timber all around this house.

The Maison dite François Ier is a wood-panelled house located in the heart of the town, probably one of the oldest in the Cité as it was built as early as 1519 – following the fire of 1512.
Acquired and renovated by the municipality, it is now an art gallery open to all from spring to late autumn. It features painters, ceramists and/or sculptors: visiting these exhibitions provides as much opportunity to discover these works as the beauty of the architecture of this House.

Walking back a little bit we see the side… sadly the road works are at the wrong time hehehe

Still, let’s enjoy the architectural elements of this very old well preserved house.

Half way the street we are wandering over we sit down at a cafe and enjoy a nice drink. My views to the left next to me is this flower shop. As you all know, I like flowers a lot…

I will enclose next 4 highlights for you from above’s website as it is rather interesting to know 🤓

-The town foundation goes back to the roman occupation and it was then called « Albiniacum ». The oldest actual remains date from the XIIth century.
-In 1189 king Philippe Auguste declares the town a royal property.
-Soon after the 100 years war (1337- 1453) had started between France and England, Aubigny was sacked and burnt by the English soldiers many times. In 1420, in order to prepare the recapture of his kingdom Charles VII took refuge at Bourges (The English called him then « the tiny king of Bourges ») and he called the Scots for help according to the Auld Alliance treaty.
-In 1423, Charles VII granted Aubigny estate and lordship to Jean Stuart of Darnley, a Scottish army constable and cousin of the Scottish king as a reward for his help to rescue his kingdom against the English invadors. Within the scope of the Auld Alliance, a military treaty signed by France and Scotland in 1295. From this time on, Aubigny became « The City of the Stuarts ».

Do yourself a favour and read a bit more on the above website… it is interesting to know and more to discover.

As we wander out of the town I see more hints to Scotland, like Scottish flags in shop windows. I didn't know the history at the time I was there and didn’t capture those subtle hints but after reading the history I do recall seeing them all around the town.

Almost back at the parking area to start our drive further north I see these buildings across the street from me.
So beautiful… just look at the tower on the corner. It must have been amazing back in the days, many many moons ago to wander these streets.
So much history and the architecture still reflects it nowadays.

If you find yourself in the middle of France one day. Do visit this village. It is enchanting and very cute. I hope to return and explore much more of it as I didn’t see it all…

Update health: I am still resting a lot and doing nothing… no work or any restoration works. As I am still recovering and not feeling well yet and the brain fog is bad at the moment too (yep… I am a woman at a certain age 🫣).
I feel my immune system is still suffering big time and this morning my lymph nodes in my neck started to get sore… let’s hope the rest will ease all down a bit.
The very hot temperatures here in the far North since 1,5 weeks of 30+ degrees Celsius certainly don’t help either… it is unknown of to have these temps here. The cabin has a tin roof and it is hot 🥵 let me tell you.
Luckily this weekend rain is predicted and the temperatures should go down to 20 degrees Celsius after 2 weeks suffering from the heat.
I stay positive further… I keep you updated.
