Welcome to this truly ancient site. Fancy exploring together with me this hidden gem? Yes… great. I will show you around : The Gallo - Roman ruins of an amphitheatre and much more, dating back to between the 1st and 3rd century. You can find these ruins in a small village named DEVRANT ~ in the department of Cher ~ FRANCE 🇫🇷
We will walk along the canal de Berry a little, during sunset to reach it. It was a warm August evening. This was last Sunday 10 august 2025. So very recently and I just had to share this beautiful site with you, it is definitely worth to save this location on your map 🗺️ if you ever get the change of visiting this area.

French translations with a bit of help from google translate, but I’m learning French right now and correct it if necessary, so it helps me learning too. / Traductions françaises avec un peu d'aide de Google Translate, mais j'apprends le français en ce moment et je le corrige si nécessaire, Donc ça m'aide aussi à apprendre.

Bienvenue sur ce site vraiment ancien. Envie d'explorer avec moi ce joyau caché? Oui... super. Je vais vous faire visiter : Les ruines gallo-romaines d'un amphithéâtre et bien plus encore, datant du 1er et du 3e siècle. Vous pouvez trouver ces ruines dans un petit village nommé DEVRANT ~ dans le département de Cher ~ FRANCE 🇫🇷
Nous marcherons un peu le long du canal de Berry, pendant le coucher du soleil pour l'atteindre. C'était une chaude soirée d'août. C'était dimanche dernier 10 août 2025. Donc très récemment et je devais juste partager ce beau site avec vous, cela vaut vraiment la peine d'enregistrer cet endroit sur votre carte 🗺️ si jamais vous obtenez le changement de visiter cette région.

Let’s start our walk now…
It is already 20:42h in the evening. The sun is setting behind us, what means it is getting dark soon. The walk to the ruins should only be half an hour. Are you up for it?

Nous commençons notre promenade maintenant...
Il est déjà 20h42 du soir. Le soleil se couche derrière nous, ce qui signifie qu'il fait bientôt nuit. La marche jusqu'aux ruines ne devrait durer qu'une demi-heure. Êtes-vous part?

The view in front of us is still light… so we start walking. Along Canal de Berry.

La vue devant nous est encore claire... alors nous commençons à marcher. Le long du canal de Berry.

In the canal we see a lot of waterlilies. They cover almost the entire surface.

Dans le canal, nous voyons beaucoup de nénuls. Ils couvrent presque toute la surface.

Half way our walk we spot this sign post. Still 1,5 km to go.

À mi-chemin de notre promenade, nous avons repéré ce panneau. Encore 1,5km à parcourir.

The grass and vegetation is very dry at the moment as there have been some heatwaves and we are right in one at the moment. It was 32 degrees Celsius on this day. This late in the evening it was still 29 degrees.

L'herbe et la végétation sont très sèches en ce moment car il y a eu quelques vagues de chaleur et nous sommes dans l'une d'elles en ce moment. Il faisait 32 degrés Celsius ce jour-là. Si tard dans la soirée, il faisait encore 29 degrés.

Looking back we see the sun is setting more behind the trees.

En regardant en arrière, nous voyons que le soleil se couche davantage derrière les arbres.

We find some bamboo along our path. Some very mature stems as you can see.

Nous trouvons du bambou le long de notre chemin. Certaines tiges très matures comme vous pouvez le voir.

Getting close to Devrant the streetlights turn on as we walk towards the site.

En approchant de Devrant, les lampadaires s'allument alors que nous marchons vers le site.

We find several signs with more information on them. This one shows the “Les thermes de Devrant”

Nous trouvons plusieurs panneaux avec plus d'informations à leur sujet. Celui-ci montre les « Les thermes de Devrant »

Peeking over the fence we see the ruins next to us.

En jetant un coup d'œil par-dessus la clôture, nous voyons les ruines à côté de nous.

The site is rather large. I capture some photos from the views. I discover there is a gate along the fence…

Le site est assez grand. Je capture quelques photos des vues. Je découvre qu'il y a une porte le long de la clôture...

It is open, so we enter. I was very surprised by the unlocked gate at 21:15h in the evening.
We walk over the path and see this archway.

C'est ouvert, alors nous entrons. J'ai été très surpris par la porte déverrouillée à 21h15 du soir.
Nous marchons sur le chemin et voyons cette arche.

So beautiful. It is rather large.

Tellement beau. C'est plutôt grand.

Walking underneath the arch we reach a lookout platform. We see now much more from the Roman amphitheatre. These 3 arches are well preserved.

En marchant sous l'arche, nous atteignons une plate-forme de beaut. Nous voyons maintenant beaucoup plus depuis l'amphithéâtre romain. Ces 3 arches sont bien conservées.

Taking in the views we slowly look around.

En prenant les vues, nous regardons lentement autour de nous.

Vers l'amphithéâtre.

I like it that we stand much higher and can look almost from above.

J'aime que nous soyons beaucoup plus hauts et que nous puissions regarder presque d'en haut.

Some buildings on the top. Later it turns out they house an exhibition from the site. Of course they were not open this late in the evening.

Quelques bâtiments au sommet. Plus tard, il s'avère qu'ils abritent une exposition sur le site. Bien sûr, ils n'étaient pas ouverts si tard dans la soirée.

On the way out of the gate to go around further to another lookout platform. Hubby takes a quick photo… of me. Sneaky grin 😁 don’t you think?

En sortant de la porte pour aller plus loin vers une autre plate-forme de guet. Mon mari prend une photo rapide... de moi. Sourire sournois 😁 tu ne crois pas ?

Next to the gate was this beautiful black cat… it was looking up at what we were doing there… actually it gave me a look… “why are you disturbing my sleep” kinda. Hahaha

À côté de la porte se trouvait ce beau chat noir... il regardait ce que nous faisions là-bas... en fait, il m'a jeté un coup d'œil... "pourquoi dérangez-vous mon sommeil" en quelque sorte. Hahaha

A little vegetation was planted in a spot next to the site and houses.

Un peu de végétation a été plantée à un endroit à côté du site et des maisons.

The sky is getting more dark and the streetlights are just charming. They so fit this area.

Le ciel devient de plus en plus sombre et les lampadaires sont tout simplement charmants. Ils conviennent tellement à cette région.

Walking past a small barn I see these flowers.

En passant devant une petite grange, je vois ces fleurs.

Had to take a close up. Beautiful!

J'ai dû prendre un gros plan. Magnifique!

We made it to the second platform and have a better view of the whole theatre now. To our left:

Nous sommes arrivés à la deuxième plate-forme et avons maintenant une meilleure vue sur l'ensemble du théâtre. À notre gauche :

Right in front of us:

Juste devant nous:

Towards the right. This angle is different, one can see the site fully now.

Vers la droite. Cet angle est différent, on peut voir le site en entier maintenant.

We leave the platform and walk back out of this area. Here was a sign for the exhibition. I’m sure it will be a wonderful addition to visiting this site. So plan your visit wisely… 😉

Nous quittons la plate-forme et sortons de cette zone. Voici un panneau pour l'exposition. Je suis sûr que ce sera un merveilleux ajout à la visite de ce site. Alors planifiez votre visite à bon escient... 😉

A little bit further as we walk back to the canal I find this sign. You see where more buildings used to be.

Un peu plus loin, alors que nous retournons au canal, je trouve ce signe. Vous voyez où se trouvaient d'autres bâtiments.

We walk back along the canal and turn back one more time to look. I see in the distance the streetlights. A stunning sight. Soon it will be dark. We still have half an hour walk to go back to our accommodation.

Nous retournons le long du canal et retournons une fois de plus pour regarder. Je vois au loin les lampadaires. Un spectacle magnifique. Bientôt, il fera nuit. Nous avons encore une demi-heure de marche pour retourner à notre logement.

A while further… I spot a large heron. Do you see him? It is standing in the water. As we got closer by it flew past us and landed in the river again. I’m sure it is catching frogs as they are singing loud.

Un peu plus loin... J'ai repéré un grand héron. Le voyez-vous? Il se tient dans l'eau. Au fur et à mesure que nous nous sommes rapprochés, il nous a dépassés et a atterri à nouveau dans la rivière. Je suis sûr qu'il attrape des grenouilles alors qu'elles chantent fort.

And here we end our walk together… such a stunning site to visit. If you don’t know it is there, you can easily miss it. A true hidden gem with even more to explore than I just showed you. I didn’t see the other locations you can see in the brochure, as I didn’t know about them until I just was researching for this post. Maybe one day I revisit. Who knows ☺️

Et ici, nous terminons notre promenade ensemble... un site tellement magnifique à visiter. Si vous ne savez pas qu'il est là, vous pouvez facilement le manquer. Un véritable joyau caché avec encore plus à explorer que ce que je viens de vous montrer. Je n'ai pas vu les autres emplacements que vous pouvez voir dans la brochure, car je ne les connaissais pas jusqu'à ce que je fasse des recherches pour cet article. Peut-être qu'un jour je reviendrai. Qui sait ☺️
