๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฅž FIRST produce out of my garden : DANDELION PANCAKES ANYONE ??? ๐Ÿ˜‰๐ŸŒผ

Hi all ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป

As it is finally spring/ summer hereโ€ฆ (It seems we skipped spring to be honest) ๐Ÿ˜ I have been able to harvest out of my garden alreadyโ€ฆ No, not the veggies I have only planted and sowed during the last 2 weeks, they are not even close to harvesting yet.
I have been picking some flowers that grow all over the place in my garden ๐ŸŒผ (and yours probably too) for some it is even a weedโ€ฆ but not for me ๐Ÿ˜‰
Let me introduce to you โ€œTHE #beautiful and #delicious #DANDELIONโ€
If you donโ€™t know it yetโ€ฆ we can eat the entire dandelion plant. The flowers, leaves and even the root.
In different ways of course /recipes. Like salads, teas orโ€ฆ. Like this; Today I want to share with you how I made dandelion pancakes ๐Ÿฅž from the dandelion flowers ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ

Todayโ€™s selection will be of 19 PHOTOGRAPHS
Date: 28 MAY 2024.
The Photographs in this post are all taken with my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿค“
I will follow the time stamps on them. So it looks like you are right there with me cooking something delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹

Letโ€™s start at the beginningโ€ฆ

I went outside into my garden to pick some flower heads of the dandelion plant. You can cut them with scissors or just pluck them off.

After a while I collected enough for a small stack of pancakes ๐Ÿฅž

I looked closely at them to make sure the small tiny insects ๐Ÿœ could leave / crawl out and remain in the garden.

Next I plucked out the yellow petals as we do not want the green more bitter parts for this recipe. ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ The yellow petals are nice and sweet. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Once inside I wash them in a sieve.

And place the sieve in some water in a bowl. More little little creatures can escape this way. I didn't see more after a while so all fine.

Let us prepare the pancake batter now.
I use 4 eggs ๐Ÿฅš and plain flower

A little bit of some sea salt ๐Ÿง‚

Top it off with milk ๐Ÿฅ› (I never measure and do this on a feeling)

I mix it all wellโ€ฆ ๐Ÿฅฃ and add more milk bit by bitโ€ฆ

Until I think the pancake batter is just right.

Now I add the dandelion flowers ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ

Fold them in with a spatula

If all is done I add some olive oil to the pan once it is heated well over medium to high heat.

Adding the pancake batter ๐Ÿ˜Š so exciting

Turning the little pancakes when one side is done ๐Ÿ˜

I did fit 3 small pancakes in each goโ€ฆ and continued until the pancake batter was all gone.

Here the end result of my #dandelion pancakes ๐Ÿฅž

Let me tell you, they were delicious ๐Ÿคค and I will make more soon as the garden is full of dandelions ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ

Great idea for cooking. Tell the truth, I didn't know what to cook from them other than salad. Thanks for sharing)

Thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š you should try the pancakes. Dandelions have so many health benefits. Some say it has more good things in them than kale or spinach. On-line you can find hundreds of recipes.
Right now I am making a dandelion salve from the flowersโ€ฆ will take a months or so until finished. Will post that one too.
Have a great day ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜

I have read a lot about the use of dandelions but never thought about searching for some recipes. Last day I tried some tea from them. It was not bad, but it didn't have a lovely taste)

Maybe time to look into some recipes when they are around you. The tea from the whole flower can be bitter. The petals alone are less bitter. Or add some honey ๐Ÿ

That looks pretty tasty. I have a lot of dandelions in my yard. I am going to have to try this one day.

Oh wow this looks amazing! I am always too scared to pick the dandelion flowers, because they do not flower that often here, strangely enough. I always wait till they go to seed to either spread the seeds across my garden (which never seems to work!) or save the seeds. I love dandelion leaves in salads, pastas, or in any dish really! I have yet to try the flowers and roots. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful recipe and I will sure be on the lookout for some flowers next time!!

Thanks โ˜บ๏ธ
I can imagine. If there are not many it is a shame to pick them. Here they are abundant.
Good to spread the seeds, try to. Hope they will come back more and more.
Maybe your ground is to good. They help the ground when it is to compact or it is missing nutrients like nitrogen.
You are welcome ๐Ÿค— hope you can make it one day when there are more flowers around.

Oh yes, I have heard about that! So the soil is too healthy for dandelions! I usually get one or two plants growing really big and a lot of leaves which I use in my cooking, but rarely do I see flowers and even rarer are big patches of them growing. I always wanted to make dandelion root coffee/tea, but as I said, there are too few plants growing and I will much rather use the leaves!

0

avatar

They only come when the earth is bad. They regenerate it.
I hope you manage one day to make that. I haven't tried the coffee from the roots yet. Letโ€™s see if I have enough. You know what you could do. Gather the seeds like you do and put them in pots. Compact the soil a bit. Make sure the nitrogen is low and they should be growing. Worth trying.
Treat it like a veggie plant and grow in pots or raised beds. Hahaha !LOL

My compost is very high in nitrogen, so that might be the reason why they are not really growing! There is a space in the garden with really bad soil and where in the past many many dandelions grew. I might try this patch again! They might even return this year. Will keep an eye on it.

Dandelions fix nitrogen deficiency and loosen the soil.
Maybe they return in that patch. Would be cool. Keep me posted.

Here they are at the end of flowering, luckily a few new ones did pop up. ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ

I have a slug and snail problem (or a lack of duck problem!). So they target the yummy dandelion flowers. The one plant had three beautiful flowers soon to bloom, but I see two of them are already eaten. Sad day! Alas, I still have the many nice leaves.

Aawww that is a shameโ€ฆ better get some ducks hahaha ๐Ÿคฃ
Good you still have some leaves.

I have counted at least six or seven big dandelion plants growing in pathways, but sad to say that the bugs are getting most of the flowers. I will be making some spinach and dandelion leaf soup soon for the cold and wet weather!

Thats at least something.
Sounds delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ enjoy the soup.
Hope the weather gets better for you.

Here itโ€™s summer and not reaching 20 degrees Celsius, luckily the days are getting shorterโ€ฆ although i have not had a dark night in almost 2 month. Think it will take another month for some darkness to come.
It is strange and messes with my rhythmโ€ฆ

Oh my, that would totally mess my rhythm up as well. I remember when I visited Sweden, the incredibly short days (9am - 3pm) really messed me up; I felt so sluggish and depressed and it was just the weather!

Thank you so much, I am a bit ill so the cold weather doesn't help. But the soup will!

Ohโ€ฆ in the winter we only have 4 hours of a bit of light here. It is hard. So I know what you felt.

Hope you feel better now and the soup worked.

Thank you so much! I am still on the recovery road as nothing seems to work now. I will try to fast a couple of days (as I usually do 18 hour fasts - so nothing out of the ordinary really). Let us hope this helps!

Oh my, I will not be able to cope. Here in South Africa, we are blessed with many hours of light, and even in the winter when we have 2 hours fewer light, I already begin to feel the effects. Keep well!

Sorry to hear. Hope the fasting will help a bit.

It is a bit extreme and my body hasnโ€™t adjusted yet. Never got really tired as we had the midnight sun. So no darkness for months. Luckily it is every day getting darker. But still light enough to see all hahaha

Thank you! You tooโ€ฆ good recovery ๐Ÿ˜Š

Even the fasting did not help! Now I am going to try focusing on some pre- and probiotic foods, maybe this will help. Getting rid of these bugs seems needlessly challenging, but such is life I guess!

Yes, it is crazy how much of an impact the sun and its rhythms have on our bodies! When we get used to one cycle, it is really hard to get used to another one! Best of luck, but I am sure it will become easier to adapt.

Best of luck and keep well!

Oh noโ€ฆ sorry it didnโ€™t help. If nothings works, do see a doctor
I know such is live. But sometimes it is taking to long and you need some help. Maybe some antibiotics?

It changes everythingโ€ฆ
Driving down a lot of longitude lines I see the sun go down earlier and coming up later. Finally it is getting dark at night. At home not yet. So will be a weird week away with rhythms changing againโ€ฆ

Thank you, you too, DO TAKE CARE!

Oh my, with all the changes, I can only imagine what one's body goes through. It will never have time to settle down and get used to what you are experiencing! I hope that it will soon calm down for you so that your body will get some rest!

I am feeling a lot better, not 100% but almost there, so luckily no doctors and those things involved.

I hope you have a good last couple of days before the new week starts!

I just arrived back home after the travels. Been on the go for 2 full daysโ€ฆ ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš‚โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿš— in this order hahaha and all of them were delayed. Luckily I had time in between to catch the next one.
Now I hope to catch up on allโ€ฆ settle in, in the rhythm here. Maybe the nights are getting darkerโ€ฆ will find out. Seems like summer is over. Rain and cold weatherโ€ฆ funnily I look at our forest and see some yellow trees. It canโ€™t be the start of autumn yet (I hope)

Thank you, lets hope ๐Ÿ˜Š

Oh that is wonderful to hear. Good you didnโ€™t need to get doctors involved. Hope by now you are fully 100%.

Have a lovely day, soon itโ€™s weekend haha

And the weekend is over, again! I travelled to my fiance a bit so I also have some travels behind me! I am glad that your delays did not cause too much trouble!

Oh my, I am already feeling the change of seasons as well. Funny how we experience the opposite ends of the seasons! The cold winter is making me a little bit tired!

I hope the new week will be a good one.

Thats wonderful. Hope you are enjoying the time with your fiancรฉ. It is hard so far apartโ€ฆ

It is indeed funny, the seasons being the opposite. Guess what. I have darkness at night now. Woohhooooo finally. The sun does come up at 4 now. So still only for a little while. Bit i notice the nights are really stretching.

Winter is always doing that. Making one tired and hunker down insideโ€ฆ

Thank you so much, doing my best.
Have a wonderful new week ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š
Take care! Travel safelyโ€ฆ

Winter is also the best time for stews and soups! So there is some benefit from the cold haha.

Oh my, I cannot even begin to imagine the problem of so much sunlight. My body does not shutdown when it is not completely dark. Even with some light coming through the curtains, I am wide awake. I am glad that the night time is increasing, even if only slowly!

Keep well, and I hope that the week is productive and good!

Yep, my favourite dishes for the winter ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Lets say I havenโ€™t slept much. Even with darkening curtains, there is always light. Last night for a fist it got completely dark at night. With the rainy days lately it makes it extra dark. So my body is much happier now.

Thank you, have a great weekend. Take care!

The funny think about sleep is that when your body gets used to something it really does not want to give it up. I know when I wake up at 5 am or so two days in a row, I am almost guaranteed to wake up the next day without an alarm at 5 am. Strange thing this body!

I hope the rain is pleasant and leads to good soup and freshly baked bread. Enjoy!

Oh that is great when the temperatures there are so much better.

Here it is cooling down quickly. Next week the night temperatures are going as low as 6 degrees Celsius. It should be summer but is already autumn. The leaves are turning and falling off the trees. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚

Yes, soon as it looks like. This year has been strange weather like in the world. New patterns everywhere.
They will keep me warm.
Letโ€™s hope. I wish I could harvest still some more.
Been adding (touching up) some paint to the windows and the outside of the wooden house the last 2 days. To make it winter ready. As some areas were in a bad state. At a later time I paint it properly.

Keep well too ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š

Weather is strange everywhere, you are right! Back home, it is apparently raining and here where I am it is hot and summer weather in late winter! I can only think how confused nature herself must be.

That seems kind of fun! I am waiting for the days when I own/rent my own place and when I need to do some maintenance work myself. For now, I am also enjoying the freedom from those types of jobs!

Have a splendid midweek!

Yes, if you observe nature closely you can notice her struggling.

It is fun in many ways. Enjoy it for now.
One day you will own or rent too.

I really hope that we can soon change the struggling to flourishing. Because we are capable of so many bad things, we are also capable of so much good. I am sure of it, and I am sure that if we think even just a bit differently, we can make the world so much better, causing her to smile again.

For sure, and I think there are so many of these smaller projects doing exactly this. It is just that the masses are living in such a way as if perpetual and infinite growth is a thing. Scarcity is, well funny enough, a scarce commodity in our contemporary world! I think when we bring back some scarcity, then things might change again.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yes, more and more of those smaller projects are popping up. Not sure if they are on time.

People just have the wrong mindset and are so materialistic nowadays. Everything is done for them, they live life too easy, everything needs to be quick... Like you say, bring back some scarcity and things have to change.
Our consumer mindset needs to change.

0
0
0.000
avatar

For sure. And as you mention, I am not sure if it is good enough and quick enough; consumerism is changing the very nature of our existence. It is so normalised for some people that any alternatives is so far beyond their minds that it is unthinkable. I am always reminded by the philosopher Slavoj Zizek that said on one of his book covers, it is easier for western minds to think about the end of the world than the end of capitalism (and in our case, consumerism).

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yes, it is almost fully unthinkable for some.
That a good one. He is so right!

0
0
0.000
avatar

Sadly even with everything happening around us, some people still decide willingly and consciously to turn a blind eye. Consumerism has them totally consumed.

0
0
0.000
avatar

It wonโ€™t change in our lifetimeโ€ฆ sadly.
We just have to see what happens and do our best to contribute towards the good a bit more every day ๐Ÿ˜Š

0

avatar

Sadly, it seems to be the case. So many people are blinded by the system we live in. It is really sad.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Sadly it is.

I went out into the garden today and forest.
Luckily some veggies survived me being away a lot lately, so I could harvest quite a bit. I also found some chanterelles in the wood.
Still no red tomato, but there are loads of green cherry tomatoes. I hope they ripenโ€ฆ ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

0

avatar

Oh, that is a win! I arrived home yesterday as well, and my garden was overgrown with chick weed and others. When they are trimmed, I love them, but when they take over the garden, it is not so good. So, I am getting my hands dirty to pull out all of these unwanted plants, but it feels like I am starting over. But that is also fun!

0
0
0.000
avatar

Oh weedsโ€ฆ they come quickly when we are gone.
Still working on it to get it all under control again. SoI fully understand.
The night temperatures are dropping drastically already. End of the week it goes at night down to 2 degreesโ€ฆ not sure what the veggies will do now.

0
0
0.000

After yet another week, the temperatures are probably even worse now? I have managed to get some of my weeds under control, but not much success in other parts of the garden. I hope that at least some of your plants survive!

They surely did. The frost came wayyyy to early.
Good to hear for most parts. I hope you did manage to get on top of it again.

I did harvest the beet root and 2 cucumbers before the frost came and pickled them. Processed a load of carrots and courgettes for the freezer. Some carrots are still left in the veggie beds. Too small to harvest yet. They will be the last veggies left after today.
I will get all courgettes off today even if they are small. I will make something out of them. The rest of the plants didnโ€™t make it.

It is never nice when weather does not play along! I am so sorry about the loss of produce. Frost can wreak havoc. I heard about some "black frost" that devastated hectares of potatoes here in South Africa.

No, itโ€™s sad to see. I am grateful for every little veggie I did get.
I decided to make green tomato sauce with all the small cherry tomatoes as they kept falling of the plants I had hung in the basement. I also pulled all carrots left. They are cute and small but will make 3 dinners ๐Ÿ˜Š

Just crazy, wow that is truly devastating so much.
Happy Friday! Enjoy your days, hopefully with sunshine โ˜€๏ธ

It is truly cold now. Night go to -5 and day time is 3 degrees now.
The snow is sooner than I thought. It is about 1 hour awayโ€ฆ so it wonโ€™t be long before the snow falls.
Today is a possibility and the weekend. It will be beautiful to see again.

Have a wonderful day ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป not tooooo hot ๐Ÿฅต for you hopefully.

Oh my, we never get that cold here. The coldest in the middle of the winter is about 10 degrees. So, the -5C would really destroy my body so used to the heat!

I hope that there is beauty in the cold.

The weather here is so strange, some days 30 degrees and then falling back to 15. I hope that the plants will cope with these changes, as such temperature fluctuations can cause some problems (such as mold on the leaves).

Last winter the coldest for me (ever) was -28 degrees Celsiusโ€ฆ thatโ€™s something else hahaha

We have not got any snow yet. Still some frosty nights. Somehow it warmed up. This week is exceptionally warm for this area. Even the neighbours said, this is rare. We get around 8 degrees today and tomorrow it says even 10.
So I thoughtโ€ฆ letโ€™s finish some painting on the outside of the cabin.
The base / foundation was in a need of some paint. I wanted to do it next spring. But am squeezing it in now. So it is better weather prove for the long winter to come. I finished 2 sides. Need more paint though. As more layers are needed.

That is a big difference. Wow. I hope the plants will be ok too. Crossing my fingers for you ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

Have a wonderful day ๐Ÿ˜Š

I hope that you could manage painting everything! It sounds so crazy to chase the weather from our perspective. There is never a time that we chase the weather, we always just sit back and let it roll in like the tide.

That is incredibly cold, I cannot even imagine that temperature! The coldest it gets here is about 8 C. The coldest I have experienced in South Africa was up north where it gets about -1 C, which is strange because it does not feel like that cold - up north it is very dry and the humidity is only about 20%, so it does not "feel" that cold.

I hope that this week is still not too cold!

One side / wall still to go. The other 3 needed 2 layers of paint. The weather hasnโ€™t been helping with rains during the night so the walls are to wet to paint. Today it is mistyโ€ฆ so very damp. I hope the wall can dry during the progression of the day. As Sunday more rain comes.
I can understand it is a strange concept for you.

Soon it is finished on the outside, I hope ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป so I can continue on the inside.

Luckily here the humidity isnโ€™t high either in the winter. Not like England of the Netherlands where it is cold to the bone. So it feels warmer than the temperatures. I know what you mean.

Luckily nothing too cold yet.
Have a wonderful weekend ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š

Oh no, damp weather is a pain in the behind! We have 80% humidity on this side, and in the winter nothing dries. You need tumble driers just to get your clothes dry. I cannot imagine how the paint will react to the dampness!

I hope that you are on schedule with your project, and that it is not too cold!

I had high humidity when I lived in southern Spainโ€ฆ so I understand the winter part.

The wall didn't dry, and 2 days ago we had rain. So the bottom was washed away. Not fully but enough to see the dark grey under the new white paint. So I have to wait and redo those parts.
Temperature dropped significantly and day time is 0 degrees. Tomorrow the forecast is 79mm snow โ„๏ธ continuing into Friday.

Butโ€ฆ it looks like next week 2 days above 5 degrees. (8 and 10) so I hope to paint those days. As below 5 degrees I can not paint. It is tooooo cold for the paint. (Operating temperatures)

I am sure I will get it all done and fixed before the real winter starts ๐Ÿ˜

I did have some time to carve some pumpkins for halloween ๐ŸŽƒ and write a story around it. If you have time, check out my last post ๐Ÿ˜Ž it is funny hahaha ๐Ÿคฃ
Have a great day and enjoy your Halloween, if you celebrate it.

Oh my, that seems like a crazy amount of snow for my brain that does not understand snow! Or who does not know it? I would not really cope with those temperatures, as I have come to love the year-round sun where I live!

Good luck with the painting, it sounds really interesting that you need to factor in the temperature! Some time that I never even though about.

Oh I will go and look! It is funny, they have tried to bring Halloween to South Africa for so many years now, and still after all the attempts it still fails, as we do not have the cultural history for it to take root. But I will check it out! Enjoy and keep well!

I just measured how deep the snow is right now. It is 11,5 cm deep. So a lotโ€ฆ donโ€™t think it will defrost this week with the higher temperatures.
I donโ€™t mind proper seasonsโ€ฆ going from snow and cold days to a mild summer.

Havenโ€™t been able to touch the area up with paint yetโ€ฆ as sson as the temperature goes above 5 degrees I will finish it ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป I am having high hopes for this week. Hahaha ๐Ÿคฃ

Some places donโ€™t have indeed the history to get it rooted. Thank youโ€ฆ
I havenโ€™t really celebrated it, I donโ€™t go all out with decorations like you see in America. But a few pumpkins are fun ๐ŸŽƒ๐ŸŽƒ
Thanks.

Have a great week!

The americans really give it their all with celebrations like that! Slowly, some of their stuff are becoming more prominent here, like gender reveal parties - which was never a thing as far as I remember only recently beginning to become popular under younger generations.

Oh my that is a lot of snow! And I guess it is seriously cold there as well! Again, my body will protest, because even though I do not like the extremely hot days I will take them over having extreme cold!

I saw on my last travels their Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ decorations. They are awesome. They go all out indeed.

Yes, it was never a thing where I livedโ€ฆ but it is popping up in europe lately.

The cold isnโ€™t bad actuallyโ€ฆ as it feels warmer than it look. Itโ€™s a dry cold.
One can dress for it. Lots of woollen layers.
Today though I am very coldโ€ฆ but thatโ€™s just me. Hubby seems to be ok. Hope I donโ€™t get sick.
I managed to paint the last outside bitโ€ฆ the temperature was 8 degrees, although 4 days later it is still wet. Luckily it is only 1,5 m2
I will have to repaint that in the spring.
We got yesterday some inside wall paint. So tomorrow I start with that. ๐Ÿ˜ more jobs to doโ€ฆ hahaha it will keep me warm.

Moving around and doing things in and around the house surely helps with keeping you warm. I know in the winter, when I sit and work, my hands always freeze because I do not move. But when I walk in the garden and do small tasks, my hands warm up!

Oh no, when I see the snow, I immediately get cold because my mind tells me it is cold. But I am sure your body gets used to it when you spend enough time in it!

I hope that the paint dries somehow! Good luck.

Yes, little chores helpโ€ฆ sitting down can make one cold.

Not sure if I ever get used to this much snowโ€ฆ hahaha !LOL

Probably notโ€ฆ with the first rain it will wash away. The temperatures closer to the ground are probably too cold. Luckily it is a very small spot. I retouch it in the springโ€ฆ once the snow is gone. No worries there.
Thanks ๐Ÿ˜Š

We are getting more snow. They say up to 50 cm this week.

Oh my, that is a lot of snow! I cannot even imagine how it must be. The worst snow that we got in Sweden all those year ago was a couple of cm. Nothing as much as 50!

We didnโ€™t get 50 cm but it did reach 30 cm. It is awesome!
One can create path ways in the garden to walk through. Us and the animals hahaha ๐Ÿคฃ

Now it is snow free for the last 3 days. More to come the weekend. Nights are -11 at some days.
The roads are frozen over as we had some icy rain for 2 nights. It made everything covered in iceโ€ฆ pretty sight. I took photos and will share some today.

Have a wonderful rest of the week ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป

I saw the beautiful photographs you shared! They are wonderful, a real winter paradise. I am jealous! Thanks for making us jealous haha.

That is incredibly cold, I cannot even imagine that. It breaks my mind, because when it is -1 here, I want to freeze up, and when it is 10 degrees in my home town, I get winter hands/fingers. So, with -11, I cannot even imagine it.

Hahaha !LOL

If I go outside and don't wear gloves or only have my fingerless gloves ๐Ÿงค on, as I thoughtโ€ฆ I just be a second outside and go inside shortly after. My fingers start to freeze ๐Ÿฅถ
It is coldโ€ฆ I should be properly dressed for it all the time now. Even if I go outside for a second.
I still have lots to learn ๐Ÿซฃ

We do learn for sure. Today I wrapped up warm to go to the store for groceries. The car measured along the way -17,5 degrees Celsius. Very cold todayโ€ฆ

That sounds really crazy, that must have been an adventure in the least to just get out of the car and into the shop! I remember the days when we were in Sweden, it was the same. But for us South Africans, the snow was just too much fun to stay inside.

Yes hahaha we can have exciting adventures here every day now. Just shopping is one of them.
One has to rethink just the smallest things one doesnโ€™t even think about living in a mild climate.

Yes, snow is fun in many ways.
Right now it doesnโ€™t stick together. Itโ€™s too fluffyโ€ฆ so I canโ€™t build a snowman โ›„๏ธ yet. No idea how to make it stick.

That is so interesting, the different textures of snow. I remember when we were in Sweden and Denmark, when the snow melts and becomes such a weird messy puddle of dirt. It was not cool!

I am glad that I was not the only one experiencing it as such! I could not speak to anyone really because of the language barrier, and back then I was not on any social media platforms really. Plus, everyone back home had never experienced snow! So, it was something totally new.

Sorry for the long delay in replies! I hope you have a fantastic new week.

I know what you mean. A new country, the other languageโ€ฆ snow can be a totally new experience. Especially when it is slushโ€ฆ England seems to have the most of that kind of snow

On your trip didnโ€™t they speak english anywhere? When I drove through Sweden everybody replied in english even if we tried to speak some basic Swedish in shops and restaurants. Or meeting people on the street.

No worries ๐Ÿ˜‰ different time of the year ๐Ÿ˜Ž I seem to be posting a lot of snowy posts lately hahaha โ˜ƒ๏ธ lotโ€™s of snow here now. More to come today.

They did indeed speak English from time to time, especially in Sweden and the Netherlands. But when we were in Italy, they did not want to speak in English, and we have some funny stories related to our travels there!

I have seen these snowy pictures! A lot of people from the north have started posting pictures of snow, and it is incredible.

Have a splendid week!

Oh, time goes fast. We keep saying it. I so understand. The same here. Good to hear you have a little time now. Enjoy it!

Thank you so much my friend. Yep, we had loads of snow. It must be half a meter in some places now. It is snowing right now again. The xmas was lovelyโ€ฆ quiet just hubby and me. We made it cosy and special though. The same for New Year. Soooo quiet here, we heard nothing hahaha just nature and us. Wonderful in many ways.

Happy New Year to you and yours ๐Ÿฅณ hope all the festivities were nice and the year started well for you. I wish you all the best for 2025 ๐Ÿ˜Š

It sounds like you should, so you donโ€™t forget them. A travel experience book ๐Ÿ“– is awesome. Yes why not. I hope you find the time for itโ€ฆ as you sure can write one.

I am not sure how I did not respond! But rather late than never. I hope that you are still well, and that the snow hasn't fallen too much!

Your Xmas sounds idyllic! I would really appreciate such a quiet moment in the festive season. It is always such a running around and people always move around too much! Just listening to the sounds of nature would be perfect.

I hope that the first couple of days of the new year was good! And I hope that the winter is not too cold.

Yep ๐Ÿ˜‹ rather late than never. All well here. The snow reached up to about 63cm some places even more.
Yesterday the weather turned and we had 4 hours of sleet coming out of the sky. It turned everything into ice. The top layer of the snow and every object. I hear news that loads of people couldnโ€™t go out with the car as it is one ice ๐ŸงŠ block everywhere. Lotโ€™s of accidents on the cities.
We wanted to go grocery shopping today in the city 1,5 hours away, but we wait a bit.
Temperatures go up to 4 degrees today and tomorrow, so more ice to be expected. It is not a normal winter hereโ€ฆ normally more snow and below -15 degrees Celsius.

It was just what we neededโ€ฆ we experienced something wonderful too. The deer are coming every day to the cabin now since we are feeding them (started just before Christmas) i counted 7 of them.
I made even a video about it with photos in the post. If you missed that post check it out Hereโ€ฆ roe deer. you hear the crunch of the snow of me walkingโ€ฆ later the birds in the tree and at the end the deer eating.

Thank you so much. We had lovely first weeks. We started renovating the cabin even more now. So it is fun.
Hope you had lovely days too and it is not too busy.
Take care and have a wonderful week ๐Ÿ˜Š

Nature is protesting, I am sure of it. The weather is strange here as well, as we are getting rain when we should not get any!

Stay safe on the sleet and ice! It sounds dangerous, I am sure food is not more important than safety.

It sounds great, you are so lucky to have experienced that! Nature is so special and wonderful.

Sorry for again the long reply, and I hope the renovation is going well.

Yes, I talked with more people about the rain down there. It is crazyโ€ฆ
Our driveway turned into solid ice ๐ŸงŠ I made a post about it yesterday if you want to see it.

We would choose safety first. We waited u til last Friday to go shopping. Just before the roads got worse, so we made it all safe back home and we could stock up. Thanks!

No worries ๐Ÿ˜Œ I understand, we are busy too.
Here we got a lot of progress, ticking boxes of things we finished. I wallpapered all day yesterday. So good to see some nice surfaces and fixed walls.

Have a wonderful week, hopefully with not too much rain.
Take care!

So sorry for again being a week! I had to participate in a PhD defense and had to read 350 pages of the PhD. It was so mind draining work.

It is crazy that snow and turn into ice and all of that. Or not the snow, but the rain. These are things my moderate climate brain cannot fathom!

I am glad that you are safe. Even on the best days, the roads are unsafe. I cannot imagine having to drive in such conditions as well on top of driving being inherently unsafe!

If one can tick boxes from the list, then that is awesome! Few people can say that. It took me a couple of weeks to read the PhD and to do normal work related stuff, so no real boxes ticked on my side, and it just shows how much time can quickly go past so fast.

0

avatar

Oh I can imagineโ€ฆ thatโ€™s tough. It does drain your mind.

Haha yes, some places will never see it. The roads are still tricky and we have to pick the days wisely when we need to go for supplies or other things.

You do learn a lot in a climate like this. It is such a different life style. If you can drive hereโ€ฆ one can drive anywhere ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚
Thank you so much.

We are progressing well with the renovation. We finished yesterday the master bedroom. Today we clear out the living room so we can start renovating. I checkedโ€ฆ there are 5 layers of wallpaper and an immense amount of paint layers on them in crazy coloursโ€ฆ all from the last 100 years. So we go back to bare wooden walls and start with a good base. Hope the boards on them are good ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป Although I probably need to fix the walls too, just like the bedroom.
It is fun and keeps us warm and busy. I do need to be finished in 2 months. The 2 hallways have to be done and the stairs plus staircase, sanded and painted. After that paint floors of kitchen, diningroom and livingroomโ€ฆ we will see how far we get ๐Ÿ˜Ž

You ticked boxes too. You read the pages and did other work etc etcโ€ฆ little boxes but still boxes ๐Ÿ˜‰
Have a fantastic weekend!

0

avatar

Little boxes are indeed still boxes! Thank you for that. Crazy how time flies when you tick these smaller boxes as well.

Driving is a strange skill. If I can only take some videos of what happens ons South African roadsโ€ฆ it is scary stuff! People cannot drive and it puts so many people in danger.

It must be therapeutic in some sense to peel so many layers. I can and will probably get very philosophical when doing that. All those layers representing years of experience and also layers of sediment that can be taken away. So many thought provoking ideas in the process!

0

You are welcomeโ€ฆ never forget that.
The same here. Time flies right now.

Oh I can imagine. When I lived in Malta, people couldnโ€™t drive there either. Crazy stuff too.
A shame you canโ€™t capture the craziness there. You better focus on the driving yourself.

Yes, exactly like that hahaha layer after layer. Imagining the people that have lived here. The colours or wallpaper styleโ€ฆ thinking how they would have dressed the rooms.
Me tooโ€ฆ I really enjoyed taking it all off.
Now, I am repairing the walls as they are bad. Probably still 2 days of that before we can start the next phase.

Have a wonderful new week ๐Ÿ˜Š

I will never forget! It is so good to tick off little boxes.

For sure. I will one day get a dash cam and record some of all the crazy events taking place here. We just drove past a really bad accident in which one car was really badly damaged. We did not see any body bags, but it is likely if the person survived that their lives will never be the same.

That is the best part! Now you can give your own touch, add your layer of paint to the forever growing past that accumulates with each passing year. Enjoy the process!

0

I knowโ€ฆ having little lists in front of me hahaha while renovating.

Yes, the dash cam is a great idea.
Wowโ€ฆ crazy. Thatโ€™s never fun to see. Letโ€™s hope for the best.

Yes, it is the best part. Making it all nice for hears to come. If we will be here or not. Everybody will profit from it.
Will do, thanks!
Still filling holes and uneven parts of the wall. I think tomorrow is all done, after it dries I sand it down (plaster b filler) then we can start painting and wallpapering. I found the same (old) wallpaper that is already in the dining room. So to make it come together we do 2 walls with it and the other 2 we paint.

Have a wonderful Wednesday ๐Ÿ˜Š

That is wonderful to hear! I am really jealous in some respect, as I would love to have my own place to redo and make my own. One day in the future if everything pans out! Finding a job in my career path in my country seems to be like finding a needle in a haystack (to put it really mildly).

I hope that the weather is also looking better than previously! Less snow and heading to summer?

Keep well!

Thank you โ˜บ๏ธ I know what you mean. One dayโ€ฆ I hope it all will come together and you have your job and a place of your own.
We are giving it all up soon and go back to rental in a new countryโ€ฆ the adventure calling is tooooo strong hahaha we have plans and just have to find the right spot to do them. We believe we are narrowing it all down in the right way. Again one step closer to our dreamโ€ฆ like you say, one day ๐Ÿ˜Š

Still busy busy but I finished all the wallpapering, so only painting left now in different rooms and sanding of a lot of wood hahaha

Wishful thinking here. We had more snow and the next 4 days the temperatures are rising again, what means more ice ๐ŸงŠ we even get 2 days rain as it goes to 4 degrees Celsius ๐Ÿ˜ณ so not funny. We will see.
We probably still have snow in May, not June like last year as the snow isnโ€™t even half of last year.
We are going away for a few monthsโ€ฆ we had a deadline for end of march but I had to shift it to end of April, we go to south/western France ๐Ÿ˜ time to warm up a bit hahaha I do have to finish the cabin before that though. I think I will manage. When we come back it will be summer โ˜€๏ธ
Have a beautiful weekend!

Also, any health benefits to eating dandelions?

It does have a distinctive taste. The yellow petals are sweet.
The green parts bitter and work so great in salads.
The root is used for teaโ€ฆ
So many recipes you can make with them.
Even a wine ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you pick them, make sure it is in an area that doesnโ€™t get sprayed with insecticides.

Dandelions have a better nutritious benefit than kale and spinach.
They are full of many vitamins and minerals. Lots of fibers too.
They help with digesting and your immune system.
