The Witch's Butter

(Edited)

This appears to be one of the names given to this fungus that I found in a very soggy forest.

Although Google lens identified this fungus as Tremella aurantia, it appears to actually be Tremella mesenterica or yellow brain. Please let me know if I'm wrong. To me it looked like Kraft dinner.

Golden jelly fungus is another name for it. It is slimy looking, and I fought every instinct not to touch it.

According to the Wikipedia page for this fungus, the name Witch's Butter stems from Scandinavian folklore regarding witches.

It's amazing the shapes and colours they adopt in nature, what a strong yellow they are!

They say it's edible, so I wonder what it tastes like. It looks very strange :)

The few I've tried.... didn't feel much of a taste...

I haven't seen these type of mushroom at the market. It doesn't look appetizing, but they say it might have medicinal properties 🤢
