The Spirit of the Past
Built between 1527 and 1555, Iglesia de las Mercedes is one of the oldest churches in the Americas and considered a UNESCO world heritage site. It's located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It is built in the baroque architectural style common during this period, immediately after European discovery of the American continent.
Oh, and guess who ransacked it? That’s right, the pirate Francis Drake. He destroyed many of the buildings in the area when he took over the city in 1586. Surprisingly, I didn’t find much animosity towards the pirate (or the English in general) in spite of all the mayhem he caused. Maybe I’m just not familiar enough with Dominican culture to know for certain. I got the sense that it was just one more event in the tumultuous history of the island.

Nice photo of that historical place. Cheers :)
It's centuries old and full of history. It was closed, so I didn't get to take a look inside.
