I read that the cut-up literary technique was invented by Burroughs after seeing Brion Gysin's experiments with collages in which he used pieces of newspapers, magazines, books, and other printed material. Burroughs came to believe that collages were not random but had hidden order, so he used similar collage "cut-up" principles in his writings.
