History Lessons
On the grounds of Fortaleza Ozama in Santo Domingo, there's a room dedicated to the story of the native Americans when they first encountered Europeans, and the tragic mayhem that ensued.
The story is told through animation, which is displayed on all the screens around you, so you have to look around to get the full experience, as you can see in the image.
One particularly powerful scene was a speech by a friar who fought for the rights of indigenous people such as freedom to earn a living, obtain an education, and become Christianized as free subjects. He gave this speech during a convention in which the upper echelon debated the nature of slavery and freedom.
It is a powerful story, and it is made even more poignant because it is told right in what used to be the military heart of the Spanish empire in the New World.
