As Above, So Below

Sometimes, the play of light and shadow is just right. It was evening when I took this picture. The sun was low on the horizon and only a few blades of light penetrated the dark forest canopy, striking the leaves above the trail. It was a wonderful visual effect in a matrix of forest shadows.

In the forest, you just never know what wonder you will come across. Take these trees as an example.

Upon close inspection, you'll notice that they are fused together in a tight centuries old arboreal embrace that makes them look like a single tree at the base.

Talk about a steamy jungle (technically a rainforest, but it hasn't rained in a while so...).

It's enough to make you want to go down into the macro world and observe the mysterious denizens, who have for millions of years looked cool and fascinating.

I captured two little bugs on the stem that I had not even seen. It's a big little world out there.

Ferns are not having a good time in the summer heat.

A few still have managed to keep those prehistoric good looks, thankful I'm sure, for the recent showers.

This next picture looks like a dense forest, but it's actually a small patch of moss that was growing on a fallen tree. Around it, where forest shadows dwelled, the ground was barren and upon it, lay nothing but dry needles. Add a bit of sunlight into the mix, however, and nature bursts forth in all her fractal glory.
