Architecture of the Heart

I recently attended an exhibition on the famous graffiti artist named Banksy. It was a stupendous use of space that was filled with some of the artist's most iconic work. Being a graffiti artist, Banksy had to work with his environment, usually old buildings, and his images make more sense in that context. This was an 'unauthorized' exhibition in so far as Banksy himself was not a part of it. I was not aware of this when I experienced the installations, and I'm glad I didn't find out until later. Having said that, I have to commend the designers of this project because they did a formidable job of using the architecture of the building across several floors to put on a masterpiece of a show.

What also struck me is that the exhibition practically began the moment that I came within sight of the building, located in a historic part of town. On the windows, they put stencil cutouts that one can see from outside. They created a fantastic effect inside as well.

I am posting several images that I took of this building from outside. It was built in 1900, early days in the city's history. The "Romanesque revival" style building housed the Union Steamship Company, which sounds very steampunkish and cool. I think the exhibition perhaps would not have worked so well, vibe-wise, if it been placed in a more modern space, though it can certainly be done. Enjoy!

I like the Harry Potterish look of the street sign.

Controversy aside, this exhibition was unreal. I believe it is taken worldwide, so if it ever comes to your neck of the woods then look deep into your soul and consider checking it out.

And yes, I did exit through the gift shop.

The enigmatic and controversial Banksy. I like this artistic figure's antagonistic expressions. Banksy, a name that stands out to subvert a symbolic order.

They also showed holographic video of Banksy discussing his ideas on art and his own experience. It was stunning!
