Across the Sands
I find myself confronted not just with some ancient ruins, but an entire empire that rose to glorious heights and then scattered in the pages of time. Forgotten.
Neither Bianca nor I had ever heard of Hampi until a few months prior to arriving in the sunny lands of India. Now we stood face to face with another facet of humanity, another history suddenly materializing in this timeline.
I didn't know where to start. I was overwhelmed by all the art and archeology that surrounded me in the royal Hampi temple named in honour of Virupaksha (Shiva) and Pampadevi (Parvatti), whose sublime dance creates and destroys existence. I wasn't just looking at a single work of art but the production of an entire civilization, scattered throughout the extensive grounds of the ancient city.
I began to photograph as much as I could. It was not possible to hang around enjoying the intricate details of each image. Though I was mighty tempted, believe me. I would savour them later, I told myself.

Unfortunately, some of the images didn't turn out well for a variety of reasons such as poor lighting and focus. Usually, I just delete these images without a second thought, but I think something of cultural and artistic value would be lost if I were to just chuck them out. So, I decided to conduct a rescue of sorts.
In a previous post I discussed using AI to rework one such photograph. Once again, I used PeakD's AI service with the Google Nano Banana- Editing model to work with another problematic image. I cropped and edited the original shot to clarify details then I uploaded this image to the model.

Column inside ancient temple
Prompt: "recreate the temple ruins with the figure as an oil painting, keep the same details, the textures are ancient, use the visible colors to paint the ancient walls. Use a vibrant palette to capture the earthy tones of the aged temple and the figure on the column, highlighting the interplay of light and shadow that gives life to the scene."

Please keep in mind that this is not meant to be a faithful scientific recreation. There are limits to the software, I imagine, and there are definitely limits to what I can do with a prompt, so this is an artistic interpretation. I'm still absolutely thrilled by the overall results, which are generally faithful to the original. By comparing the two images, one can see that the software was really trying to keep the original details. There are even details that I had not noticed in the photograph or didn't think about them in their proper context, but which are now salient in the reimagined work.
I enjoy how the scene suddenly comes to life not as a mere archeological/anthropological curiosity, but as the echo of a distant time willowing across the sand- to quote one of my favourite rock bands, Pink Floyd.

So much art and so beautiful! Many times photographs come out wrong... you did a perfect recreation!
It's a great way to bring the past to life. It's almost like recreating a way of life. I'm glad I kept the photos. 📸
