2 Crows 1 Eagle

(Edited)

The only sound that could be heard in the forest was the sound of the waves crashing on the ocean shore nearby. Then that stillness was broken by a hollow clicking noise. The noise had a pattern and it was clearly a bird. A crow or a raven. I have a hard time telling them apart. Crows usually make a caw! caw! sound while raven have a deeper "throatier" sound.

I stepped up on a ledge beneath a hemlock tree, where its roots grew thick and gnarled.

The birds clacked clacked, it's hard to describe the sound but it sounded like when you tap on a live microphone.

Then suddenly!

Woe!

There was an eagle perched on a branch with two crows!

I could hardly believe my eyes and began to fumble with my camera, looking for my lens. I swear I was so excited my hands were shaking, and all I kept thinking was those birds are going to fly away, and I'll have nothing to show for it, but the memories. I also began snapping with the phone cam.

The threesome remained perched on the branch. One of the crows was making sounds towards the eagle, who simply stood there listening. The calls sounded complex. Non-threatening. Soothing almost. Then curiously, the other crow came up and touched the eagle's beak with its own beak and began to "kiss" it.

I kid you not.

Scandalous!

What was going on up on those bushes? Maybe Disney was right all along and wild animals are friends, after all.

At one point, the crows began to caw and then took off. The eagle remained in place. A little while later, one of the crows came back and perched itself behind the eagle. It began to make the popping sounds and ruffled the eagle's tail feathers with its beak. I captured this exact moment in the following shot.

The other crow came back, so that branch sure got busier and noisier.

Is this normal behavior? Eagles and crows can peacefully coexist in interspecies bliss? I often see crows attacking eagles during the nesting months. I had no clue that they could actually be "friends" and spend the weekend just hanging out.

Eagles are very handsome, and crows are so clever. I was lucky to have passed by when they were there.

I like them both but I'm more curious about the raven. Great pictures!

@corvidae you have to see this!!! What do you think they were doing?

@litguru I think this is pretty rare.

Can I please use one of the pictures in Let Our Picture Tell Your Story, giving you full credit?

Isn't this crazy? Putting aside my innuendos, I think that this is interesting because they actually seemed to be communicating- with the crows doing most of the talking, but the eagle chirped too.

Please feel free to use the image. Many thanks!

Thanks so much :)

Physical interaction is also communication. They must have known each other for there to be that much trust.

@litguru what a cool thing to see!!!! Who knows what their relationship is with the eagle. But seeing them preen each other is amazing! I'm so jealous!

You were wondering if they were crows or ravens. I can tell from the beaks in the first photo and tail shape in this shot that they are ravens. Tails are a good way to tell them apart in flight, too. Crow=cut, Raven=wedge. Also, proportionately they are closer in size to the eagle than a crow would be.

Where did you see this? I'm guessing the pacific northwest?

Thank you @corvidae! That's so fantastic to know about the differences between ravens and crows. So this story gets even more intriguing. They were making sounds that I rarely hear crows make, but then they crowed, so I wasn't sure. It was such a strange situation I wondered if I was hallucinating. I saw this in a Vancouver park called the Lighthouse park. It looks like this is hang out place for the eagles because I saw a few of them flying about. So glad you enjoyed it!

Even if you were hallucinating, it sounds like a good trip!

I'm wondering if you heard the quork sounds. They're like deep melodic pops and rattles. Magical forest noises. Crows make sounds that are similar but they're much higher in pitch and the sound doesn't carry as well.

They were fairly high up on the tree, and the sound I heard sounded like the "pops" in this video. The pops were continuous, but the distance could've hidden other sounds. I should've recorded it, but it was one of those moments when excitement got the better of my judgement. So intriguing.

Ooooooo that's a female raven!! Crows make rattle and knock calls like that too but they're not as rich.

With the crows it's typically a kind of "ask," usually about food. I'm guessing it's similar with ravens, but I don't spend much time with them.

Don't beat yourself up about not recording. Sometimes you just gotta be in the moment, in the experience.

Also, this came up as a suggestion at the end of the video...🤣😅

Ooooooo that's a female raven!!

This tale just keeps getting wilder. The odd complexity of the calls is what made me stop and look up. It seemed so unusual.

That video is hilarious. I wish I could speak raven but it sounds like you need specialized vocal equipment! 😄
