Mike Trout es uno de los peloteros que más sigo en el béisbol. Las lesiones en los últimos años lo han condenado a una irregularidad que, a larga distancia, impactará en su estadística de por vida, aunque este año, salvo catástrofe, accederá al club de los 400 cuadrangulares. Pero lo que más quiere Trout es jugar la postemporada, y, después de la amarga experiencia de 2014, que yo recuerde, esta es una de las pocas temporadas en las que su equipo ha llegado a la pausa del Juego de las Estrellas con opciones de seguir peleando al menos uno de los boletos Wild Card. Tras una buena victoria de sus Angelinos en la jornada del miércoles, escogí para hoy el último partido de la subserie contra los Rangers, que están luchando duro por el mismo objetivo. Como un valor agregado para mí en este caso estaba la agradable presencia de los cubanos Jorge Soler, un toletero ya curtido, y el ex White Sox Yoan Moncada, en el mismo line-up que Trout.

Pero no fue un día inteligente para Anaheim. Desde el mismo primer inning, Texas se la puso bien difícil. Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, y Adolis García descifraron muy bien los primeros envíos —fundamentalmente en sinker— del abridor Jack Kochanowicz para producir la primera de su equipo, a lo que siguió una conexión no tan convincente como suertuda de Jonah Heim para empujar la segunda. Mike Trout is one of the baseball players I follow the most. Injuries in recent years have condemned him to inconsistency, which, in the long run, will impact the numbers he could have achieved under better health conditions—though this year, barring catastrophe, he’ll reach the 400-home run club. But what Trout wants most is to play in the postseason, and after the bitter experience of 2014 (as far as I remember), this is one of the few seasons where his team has reached the All-Star break still in contention for at least a Wild Card spot.

After a solid win by his Angels on Wednesday, I chose to watch the final game of their subseries against the Rangers, who are in the same playoff race. As an added bonus for me, the lineup featured the pleasant presence of Cubans Jorge Soler—a seasoned slugger in the majors—and former White Sox player Yoan Moncada, batting alongside Trout.

But it wasn’t a good day for Anaheim. Right from the first inning, Texas made things tough. Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, and Adolis García figured out starter Jack Kochanowicz’s early pitches—mostly sinkers—to drive in their first run, followed by a not-so-convincing but lucky hit from Jonah Heim to push across the second.

In the bottom half, the Californians tried to respond quickly. Shortstop Zach Neto, who ended up having a strong game, led off with a hit against lefty Patrick Corbin. But then Trout grounded into a double play. The Angels still threatened, but Taylor Ward—who had reached on a soft hit to right and then advanced to second on a wild pitch—was thrown out at home on a laser throw from Cuban outfielder García after a hard-hit ball by Jo Adell.

Kochanowicz, quien también tiene en su repertorio el omnipresente sweeper, arrancó el tercero concediendo boleto a Seager y permitiendo otro hit de parte del productivo Semien. Parecía que iba a salir del atolladero después de dominar a Soler y Heim, pero a mi juicio volvió a insistir demasiado con sus envíos rápidos y perdió la batalla contra los jardineros Wyatt Langford y Evan Carter. Ambos empujaron una carrera (4-0), posteriormente Kochanowicz incluso se autoinfligió más daño con un balk (permitiendo la quinta), y luego le dejó una apetitosa slider en el centro del cuadro al primera base Jake Burger, que no lo perdonó para remolcar la sexta. Kochanowicz, who also features the ever-present sweeper, started the third by walking Seager and allowing another hit to the ever-dangerous Semien. It looked like he might escape the jam after retiring Soler and Heim, but in my opinion, he relied too much on his fast pitches and lost the battle against outfielders Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter. Both drove in a run, and then Kochanowicz made things worse with a balk (allowing the fifth run) before leaving a juicy slider over the middle to first baseman Jake Burger, who didn’t miss it, bringing in the sixth.

A walk to Mexican infielder Osuna ended Kochanowicz’s night, and he was relieved by Carson Fulmer. The right-hander, a Florida native, didn’t fare much better, serving up a meatball to a beast like Seager, who crushed it to center field to widen the lead to eight runs. Luck continued to evade the Angels when a weakly hit ball from Semien dropped harmlessly in front of Jo Adell. 9-0 Rangers.

From there, the game had little to highlight until Tyler Ward launched a mammoth homer off Corbin—with the efficient Neto on base—to put the Angels on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Later, the Cuban duo of Soler and Moncada helped add a third run in the sixth against reliever Jacob Latz, thanks to a solid opposite-field hit from first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr.

Cualquier duda de que toda esperanza de Los Angeles se había esfumado en el primer tercio, la despejó el nacido en Ciego de Ávila, Adolis García, quien en la parte alta de la octava "le dio en el queso" —con un compañero a bordo— a un envío que se le quedó en el mismo medio a Fulmer. 11-3 Rangers. Neto also went deep off righty Dane Dunning to pad the score before the final curtain fell on the game. Now, the standings show the Los Angeles Angels at 45-48, half a game behind the Rangers (46-48), who are tied with the Kansas City Royals. From that spot, they’re breathing down the necks of the Mariners, Red Sox, and Rays. There’s promise of good baseball ahead. Stay tuned!
