Hola amigos del deporte. Tigers y Rangers, los dos equipos que protagonizaron la entrega dominical beisbolera de ESPN, viven momentos diferentes. Los primeros, a pesar de que no ganaban desde el pasado 9 de julio, llegaban firmes como líderes de la división central en la Liga Americana, en tanto los campeones de la Serie Mundial de 2023 están algo separados de Houston, que comanda el frente oeste. En todo caso, la selección de abridores prometía un buen duelo de pitcheo, algo que en buena medida se cumplió con destaque para los brazos de los Tigers.

Tarik Skubal entró encendido con su recta, descifrable solo para Corey Seager, ponchando a siete rangers en el primer tercio del encuentro. Hello, sports fans! The Tigers and Rangers—the two teams featured in ESPN’s Sunday baseball showcase—are in very different situations. The Tigers, despite not having won since July 9th, arrived holding firm as leaders of the American League Central Division. Meanwhile, the 2023 World Series champions (the Rangers) are somewhat trailing Houston, who currently leads the AL West. The starting pitching matchup promised a good duel on the mound, and for the most part, that’s what we got—with the Tigers’ arms standing out. Tarik Skubal came out firing with his fastball, which only Corey Seager seemed to solve, as he struck out seven Rangers in the first third of the game.

In the top of the second inning, his teammates strung together three straight hits against Jacob Latz, with infielder Zach McKinstry driving in the first run for the visitors (on the play, Cuban outfielder Adolis García misplayed the defense, going for an impossible out at home plate, which allowed McKinstry to sneak into second base). From there, though not as dominant as his mound opponent, Latz managed to hold the Tigers scoreless over the next three innings.

In the bottom half, the only notable moment was Skubal finally getting the better of Seager—though on a hard-hit ball to second base—for the first time in the game. Detroit then threatened in the top of the seventh, putting a runner in scoring position, but Hoby Milner coolly shut it down with a steady diet of sweepers and sinkers, striking out pinch-hitter Colt Keith. Skubal’s first real trouble came in the bottom of the seventh when Cuban slugger Adolis García hammered a poorly placed changeup for a double, followed by a single from California-born catcher Kyle Higashioka.

By then, the Motor City’s ace was nearing 100 pitches, yet he stayed in just long enough to rack up his 11th strikeout of the night against Jonah Heim—before being pulled with the tying run stranded at third. That run would eventually score, however, as reliever Tyler Holton uncorked a wild pitch, allowing García to dash home aggressively. Ballgame tied. While the Tigers’ decision to go to the bullpen could have worked, I’ve always believed that in these situations—especially after such a gem of an outing—a starter like Skubal should have the chance to defend himself.

After McKinstry’s RBI single back in the second, the Tigers had squandered eight straight scoring opportunities with runners in scoring position—a frustrating streak finally snapped by Matt Vierling, who lined a clutch single to center to plate their second run and ease Skubal’s potential frustration. 2-1, Tigers.

Holton and the flamethrowing Will Vest kept Texas in check in the bottom half, and after right-hander Caleb Boushley’s quiet ninth, the stage was set for the home team’s last gasp. Vest left no room for drama, snuffing out Texas’ hopes with a brutal strikeout against García. With the win, Detroit (60-40) tightens its grip on the AL Central lead, while the Rangers (50-50) remain locked in a tight Wild Card race with scrappy contenders like the Angels (49-50).
