Hola amigos del deporte. Este viernes, para la continuación de nuestras crónicas del béisbol de Grandes Ligas, escogí el partido entre Yankees y Cubs. Primero porque se trata de dos equipos de diferentes ligas, lo cual siempre es un elemento atractivo, y, además, porque ambos han tenido un buen performance en lo que va de temporada, si bien con ligera distancia de tres partidos en favor de los del Viejo Circuito. Los Yankees cedieron bastante espacio en la tabla desde finales de junio ante los Blue Jays y luego frente a sus rivales de ciudad —en total perdieron seis consecutivos desde el 30 de junio—, pero se recuperaron un poco barriendo a Seattle esta semana. En otra nota positiva para ellos, Stanton parece reencontrarse con tacto y poder.

En la primera entrada, su abridor Carlos Rodón permitió un buen hit a la banda contraria al ex Astros Kyle Tucker, pero luego dominó a Seiya Suzuki y Carson Kelly. Chris Flexen, de gran 2025 hasta el momento, fue el encargado de subir al montículo por los Cachorros, aunque la transmisión de los Yankees avanzó el dato de que no le va bien contra el equipo más ganador en la historia del béisbol. Flexen se las arregló en la parte baja, mientras Chicago abrió la parte alta del tercer episodio de la manera soñada: embasando al primer bateador, y particularmente al noveno en la tanda, pero Rodón sorteó la situación agregando además su quinto ponche de la noche contra Tucker. Los Yankees sí aprovecharon la misma condición inicial. El infielder venezolano Oswald Peraza se embasó con rodado por tercera, y acto seguido se desplazó hasta allí mismo tras hit sólido al jardín izquierdo de Jasson Domínguez. Aaron Judge lo remolcó con elevado de sacrificio, y Bellinger asestó un duro golpe con cuadrangular entre right y center que puso ventaja de tres para los del Bronx.

Hello, sports fans. This Friday, as we continue our coverage of Major League Baseball, I chose the game between the Yankees and the Cubs. First, because these are two teams from different leagues, which always adds an exciting element, and second, because both have performed well so far this season, though with a slight three-game advantage in favor of the Old Circuit squad. The Yankees gave up quite a bit of ground in the standings since late June against the surging Blue Jays and then against their crosstown rivals—losing six straight since June 30—but they bounced back somewhat by sweeping Seattle this week. On a positive note for them, Stanton seems to be rediscovering his touch and power.

Left-hander Carlos Rodón took the mound for the Yankees. After allowing a solid hit to former Astro Kyle Tucker, he then dominated Japan’s Seiya Suzuki and catcher Carson Kelly. Chris Flexen, having a strong 2025 so far, was tasked with starting for the Cubs, though the Yankees' broadcast noted he hasn’t fared well against the most successful team in baseball history. He pitched very carefully to Aaron Judge, even walking him, but kept Cody Bellinger—the wild-swinging lefty who knows Chicago well from his previous stint in the National League—and designated hitter Ben Rice in check, inducing flyouts to center and left field, respectively. Rodón struck out three in the second inning, though he got some help from the home plate umpire in his duel against Dansby Swanson. (By the way, I often find it incredible how well MLB hitters have developed their sense of the strike zone.)

Flexen, whose fastball isn’t overpowering but is well-commanded, didn’t start the bottom half well—walking Jazz Chisholm Jr.—but handled the next batters effectively, including a strikeout of former Diamondback Paul Goldschmidt. Chicago opened the top of the third in dream fashion: getting the leadoff man on base, particularly the ninth hitter in the order, but Rodón worked out of the jam, adding his fifth strikeout of the night against Tucker. The Yankees, however, capitalized on the same opportunity. Venezuelan infielder Oswald Peraza reached on a grounder to third, then advanced to the same base after a sharp single to left field by Jasson Domínguez. Aaron Judge drove him in with a sacrifice fly, and Bellinger delivered his first home run of the night giving the Bronx Bombers a three-run lead.

De la parte alta de la cuarta lo más destacado fue la defensa de Judge, en tanto Flexen no tuvo problemas en su cierre. Tras otro episodio tranquilo para Rodón en el ecuador del encuentro, los suyos le entraron por los ojos al relevista Caleb Thielbar. Domínguez se embasó emulando a Peraza con otra conexión por los predios de Jon Berti, y fue nuevamente empujado por Bellinger, que le pegó con todo otra vez para su segundo vuelacercas del encuentro. 5-0 Yankees. Rodón, por su parte, continuó apilando cachorros sin muchas dificultades, en tanto los Yankees volvieron a cruzar el home plate una vez en la sexta —gracias al dueto Goldschmidt/Volpe— y otras dos en la parte baja de la séptima —castigando masivamente los envíos del zurdo Jordan Wicks, y nuevamente con destaque para el ex Cascabel.

En la parte alta de la octava, y con hombres en primera y tercera, el mando yankee le dio a Rodón la oportunidad de defender con su propio brazo su excelente salida. Todavía después de 100 lanzamientos estaba topando las 98 MPH, y complació a la fanaticada —toda de pie— siempre contando con la oportuna ayuda del Juez, que se presentó en modo guante de oro. De hecho, elegir entre el brazo de Rodón, el guante de Judge, y el bate de Bellinger, no me parece una tarea sencilla.

The top of the fourth was highlighted by Judge’s defense, while Flexen had no issues in his half of the inning. After another smooth inning for Rodón in the middle of the game, the Yankees jumped all over reliever Caleb Thielbar. Domínguez reached base, mirroring Peraza with another hit through Jon Berti’s territory, and was once again driven in by Bellinger, who crushed another pitch for his second homer of the night. 5-0 Yankees.

Meanwhile, Rodón kept mowing down Cubs hitters with little trouble, while the Yankees crossed home plate once more in the sixth—thanks to the Goldschmidt-Volpe duo—and twice more in the bottom of the seventh—pounding lefty Jordan Wicks’ offerings, with another standout performance from the former Diamondback. In the top of the eighth, with men on first and third, the Yankees’ coaching staff gave Rodón the chance to protect his outstanding outing with his own arm. Even after 100 pitches, he was still hitting 98 MPH, and he delighted the fans with some jaw-dropping help from Judge in Gold Glove mode.

Y todavía vendrían más cosas buenas para New York. En la parte baja de la octava, el propio Judge negoció boleto, dejando la escena lista para que Bellinger, a quien ya le habían "robado" su tercer jonrón antes, esta vez sí lograra concretar su primer partido con tres batazos de vuelta completa. Lo disfrutó el ex Dodger, sobre todo cuando revisó en el tablet, con Judge al lado, la buena jugada defensiva del jardinero rival Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Goldschmidt, otro encendido en la noche neoyorquina, empujaría luego a Rice para la oncena de su equipo. Ya en la novena entrada, el derecho Scott Effross entró a liquidar las acciones por los bombarderos. Irrespetuosamente recibido por el emergente dominicano Vidal Bruján, retiró a los otros tres hombres a los que se enfrentó para dar la puntada final a la extraordinaria noche de Carlos Rodón, quien, por cierto, también tiene ascendencia cubana. Ahora son los Yankees (53-41) los enrachados con cinco victorias al hilo, mientras que los Cubs igual dormirán en la cima de la central en la Nacional, pero ahora con balance de 55-39.

And there was still more good news for New York. In the bottom of the inning, Judge himself worked a walk, setting the stage for Bellinger—who had earlier been "robbed" of what would have been his third home run—to finally secure his first career three-homer game. The former Dodger savored the moment, especially when he and Judge reviewed the opponent’s defensive gem by Pete Crow-Armstrong on the tablet. Goldschmidt, another standout in the New York night, would later drive in Rice for his team’s eleventh run.

Then, in the ninth, right-hander Scott Effross came in to close it out for the Bombers. Though rudely greeted by Dominican pinch-hitter Vidal Bruján, he retired the next three batters to put the finishing touch on Carlos Rodón’s extraordinary outing—Rodón, whose mother was born in Cuba and emigrated to the U.S. in 1967. Now the Yankees (53-41) are the ones riding high with five straight wins, while the Cubs (55-39) will still sleep atop the National League Central but with a slightly less comfortable lead.
