Where miracles sleep: a legend from the Columbus Cemetery [en/es]
Greetings to my friends at Worldmappin. Today I want to show you a sacred place, a profound part of our identity. In Cuba, miracles aren't just told... they're visited.
Among the silent paths of the Colón Cemetery in Havana—one of the most haunting spaces for its funerary art and emotional weight—there is a tomb that is never alone. They call it The Miraculous One, and its story has transcended the marble to settle in the Cuban people's soul.
I went there with my mother. We hadn't planned it. We were walking through the cemetery, as I've done so many times, and it occurred to me to ask her if she knew the tomb of La Milagrosa. She had heard of it, but had never visited it. I, on the other hand, had. I had been there when my son was little and often sick. A friend told me about it, and as a desperate mother, I arrived there filled with faith.
In front of the tomb, we suggested making a wish. But there's one rule: never say your wish before it's granted. They say that if you reveal it, the miracle vanishes. In silence, we followed the ritual: knocking with our knuckles, without turning our backs on the white marble... All that was missing was leaving a flower, because we hadn't planned for it. Even so, I firmly believe that everything asked for with faith and given with good intentions comes in its time.
The tomb belongs to Amelia Goyri de la Hoz, a young mother who died at the beginning of the 20th century with her baby. When the grave was opened years later, they found her body intact... and the baby in her arms. Since then, it is believed that she intercedes for mothers, lovers, and those who come with a hopeful heart. Her story, although shrouded in legend, lives deeply in Cuban sentiment.
This corner of the cemetery is surrounded by plaques of gratitude, fresh flowers, and tombstones that look like open letters to heaven. It's almost impossible not to be moved by the energy of the place. Cubans, tourists, believers, and curious people converge there, guided by faith or mystery.

La Milagrosa is not a forgotten myth, it's a living tradition. Her miracles are whispered about from generation to generation, part of the Havana imagination.
And you? Have you visited a place where faith, memory, or legend come alive? I'd love to read your stories…
