Wednesday Walk: A walk through Caimito de Guayabal [En/Es]
This weekend I had the opportunity to visit the province of Artemisa, bordering Havana, to meet some friends in a small village belonging to this municipality. However, as I passed through the village of the same name (Caimito), I decided to stop and take some photos, with them I join the #wednesdaywalk challenge promoted by @tattoodjay.
Este fin de semana tuve la oportunidad de visitar la provincia de Artemisa, limítrofe con La Habana, para reunirme con unos amigos en un pueblecito perteneciente a este municipio. Sin embargo, al pasar por el pueblo del mismo nombre (Caimito), decidí detenerme y capturar algunas fotos, con ellas me uno al reto de #wednesdaywalk promovido por @tattoodjay.
I know this town very well, as in my youth I was a scholarship holder in this municipality. This small town founded in 1820 by the Spaniards, has a beautiful park and a church, the Parroquia de San Juan Bautista. I found out that in its beginnings, the town did not have a park, and the church gave part of its land so that the inhabitants could enjoy this space.
I must say that the park is small compared to other nearby villages, but it is very well kept and really beautiful. The village itself is very clean. In front of the park is the radio station, and on one side is a bodega (market), while on the other side is the village pharmacy. Everything is very simple. As it was Saturday, everything was very quiet. In my mind I remembered the years of my scholarship, when I used to come to the centre of this village and there was always a lot of movement. Now everything seemed much quieter.
Conozco muy bien este pueblo, ya que en mi juventud fui becaria en este municipio. Esta pequeña ciudad fundada en 1820 por los españoles, tiene un hermoso parque y una iglesia, la Parroquia de San Juan Bautista. Me enteré que en sus inicios, el pueblo no contaba con un parque, y la iglesia cedió parte de su terreno para que los habitantes pudieran disfrutar de este espacio.
Debo decir que el parque es pequeño comparado con otros pueblos cercanos, pero está muy bien cuidado y es realmente bonito. El pueblo en sí está muy limpio. Frente al parque está la emisora de radio, y a un lado hay una bodega (mercado), mientras que al otro lado está la Farmacia del pueblo. Todo es muy sencillo. Como era sábado, todo estaba muy tranquilo. En mi mente recordaba los años de mi beca, cuando solía venir al centro de este pueblo y siempre había mucho movimiento. Ahora todo parecía mucho más tranquilo.
The mainstay of the economy of this municipality is agriculture and livestock farming. This is the site of the Empresa Pecuaria Genética Los Naranjos, which in its heyday had several cattle farms that supplied the local dairy industry. To unite the workers and farmers who linked their land to this company, the community "Los Naranjos" was created, where a sculpture of one of these mammals is preserved at the entrance.
El pilar de la economía de este municipio es la agricultura y la ganadería. Aquí se encuentra la Empresa Pecuaria Genética Los Naranjos, que en sus mejores tiempos tuvo varias ganaderías que abastecían a la industria láctea local. Para unir a los trabajadores y a los campesinos que vincularon sus tierras a esta empresa, se creó la comunidad "Los Naranjos", donde en la entrada se conserva una escultura de uno de estos mamíferos.
It was a really beautiful walk, and thanks to the rains of the previous days, I was able to appreciate the intense green of the vegetation. Here is a small selection of photos I took, both of urban and rural places in this ancient municipality of Caimito del Guayabal.
