The tarot speaks in Havana / El tarot habla en La Habana
A few days ago, while walking through Old Havana, I let myself be carried away by the magic of its streets. Mercaderes, as always, was bustling. It's a street home to many art and history centers, and I also love admiring its balconies and colonial facades that stand the test of time, with that air of color and rhythm that only this city can offer. But this time, something stopped me.
At the corner of Mercaderes and Obrapía, right on the ground floor of the Benito Juárez Museum, an explosion of color called to me from the sidewalk. It was an exhibition hall that seemed to speak from the walls, called: Contemporary Tarot: Reflections of Cuba.
Días atrás, mientras caminaba por La Habana Vieja, me dejé llevar por la magia de sus calles. Mercaderes, como siempre, estaba muy movida. Es una calle donde se concentran muchos centros de arte e historia, y además me encanta admirar sus balcones y fachadas coloniales que resisten el tiempo, con ese aire de color y ritmo que solo esta ciudad sabe ofrecer. Pero esta vez, algo me detuvo.
En la esquina de Mercaderes y Obrapía, justo en la planta baja del Museo Benito Juárez, una explosión de color me llamó desde la acera. Era una sala expositora que parecía hablar desde los muros, llamada : El Tarot Contemporáneo: reflejos de Cuba.
I entered with curiosity and left nourished by such original and colorful art. This room regularly displays exhibitions by Cuban artists. This one, in particular, is called Mystical Dreams, and brings together works by Víctor Mora, Karly Romero, and José González. These three artists have reinterpreted tarot models from a deeply local perspective. Each work represents a story of desire, spirituality, and change. Paintings, drawings, and different forms of art intertwine to form an emotional map of contemporary Cuba.
Entré con curiosidad y salí nutrida de ese arte tan llamativo y lleno de colores. En esa sala suelen exponerse muestras de artistas cubanos. Esta, en particular, se llama Sueños místicos, y reúne obras de Víctor Mora, Karly Romero y José González. Estos tres artistas han reinterpretado los modelos del tarot desde una mirada profundamente local. Cada obra representa una historia de deseo, espiritualidad, cambio. Pinturas, dibujos y diferentes variantes de arte se entrelazan para formar un mapa emocional de la Cuba contemporánea.
What moved me most was how these works represent and invite us to explore the colors of the city. They are mirrors of the collective soul, doors open to the imagination. Some evoke urban legends, others everyday rituals, and all together they compose a symbolic universe that feels both intimate and universal.
Lo que más me conmovió fue cómo estas obras que representan e invitan a conocer los colores de la ciudad. Son espejos del alma colectiva, puertas abiertas a la imaginación. Algunas evocan leyendas urbanas, otras rituales cotidianos, y todas juntas componen un universo simbólico que se siente íntimo y universal a la vez.
The institution is housed in a building with colonial architecture, and its mission to bridge cultures here becomes a perfect setting for this journey. The curator told me that the exhibitions change frequently, alternating between Cuban and Mexican artists, always with a contemporary perspective. But this exhibition has something special: it transforms tarot into a visual language that speaks of identity, memory, and the future.
La institución está enclavada en una edificación con una arquitectura colonial y su vocación de puente entre culturas, se convierte aquí en un escenario perfecto para esta travesía. La encargada me contó que las exposiciones cambian con frecuencia, alternando entre artistas cubanos y mexicanos, siempre con una mirada contemporánea. Pero esta muestra tiene algo especial: transforma el tarot en un lenguaje visual que habla de identidad, memoria y futuro.
Finally, we found a staircase in a side landing, adorned with a plant depicting the Virgin of Guadalupe, a beloved figure of Mexicans. I had never seen one so close. Although I couldn't go up to the second floor, I was allowed to ascend the staircase because I was impressed by a powerful trilogy on the landing: three large panels that intertwine beautifully. It's a great work by the artist Juan Chawuk, called "Actions of Joy." A call to rescue human values, repudiating violence. I liked the power it conveys and how the figures intertwine.
Al final, encontramos una escalera en un relleno lateral, adornada con una planta donde se encuentra la Virgen de Guadalupe, muy adorada por los mexicanos. Nunca había visto una tan de cerca. Aunque no se podía subir a la segunda planta, me dejaron ascender la escalera porque quedé impresionada por una trilogía con mucha fuerza en el descanso: tres grandes paneles que se entrelazan de una forma hermosa. Es una gran obra del artista Juan Chawuk, llamada Acciones de júbilo. Un llamado a rescatar los valores humanos, repudiando la violencia. Me gustó la fuerza que transmite y cómo se entrelazan las figuras.
If you're in Old Havana, we invite you to stop by that corner. Not only to admire the museum's beauty, but also to cross the threshold of this exhibition that turns each letter into a revelation. Sometimes, between cobblestones and balconies, entire universes are hidden, waiting to be discovered.
