The Capitol, doors open to history [en/es]
I arrived at the National Capitol of Cuba one clear morning with the excitement of stepping foot again in that space that I had known before its restoration. Ten years of hard architectural work had transformed it into a resplendent jewel. Fortunately, the entrance is acquired right in front and the fifteen-minute wait allowed me to contemplate its imposing façade.
Llegué al Capitolio Nacional de Cuba una mañana clara con la emoción de volver a pisar ese espacio que había conocido antes de su restauración diez años de duro trabajo arquitectónico lo habían transformado en una joya resplandeciente afortunadamente la entrada se adquiere justo al frente y la espera de quince minutos me permitió contemplar su imponente fachada
We climbed fifty-six granite steps, flanked by two bronze sculptures by the artist Angelo Zanelli, one representing the Progress of Human Activity, and the other, the Guardianship of the People. At the entrance, where a friendly and knowledgeable young guide was waiting for us, the space welcomed us with twelve granite columns and marble reliefs that seemed to guard the threshold of another time. The bronze doors, almost ten meters high, narrate the history of Cuba from the aborigines to the inauguration of the Capitol. There are three doors, three chapters open to the visitor, a remarkable detail and a exquisite beauty.
Subimos cincuenta y seis escalones de granito, flanqueados por dos esculturas de bronce del artista Angelo Zanelli, una representa el Progreso de la Actividad Humana, y la otra, la Virtud Tutelar del Pueblo. En el pórtico, donde nos esperaba una joven guía simpática y muy instruida, el espacio nos recibe con doce columnas de granito y relieves en mármol que parecen custodiar el umbral de otro tiempo, Las puertas de bronce, de casi diez metros de altura, narran la historia de Cuba desde los aborígenes hasta la inauguración del Capitolio. Son tres puertas, tres capítulos abiertos al visitante, un gran detalle y de exquisita belleza.
Upon entering, your gaze inevitably rises to the golden dome, over ninety meters high, once the fifth tallest in the world. Stained-glass windows filter light into the building, creating a solemn and vibrant atmosphere. Just below, the Statue of the Republic, also by Angelo Zanelli, stands tall with its gilded bronze columns, after its restoration. It is considered the third largest indoor statue in the world. It represents a young female figure, standing, dressed in a tunic, and armed with a helmet, shield, and spear.
In front of it, embedded in the floor, is a replica of the Capitol diamond, shrouded in a mysterious history. The original is protected in the country's reserves. This diamond marks Kilometer Zero, surrounded by a multicolored marble star, the point from which Cuba is measured.
Al entrar, la mirada se eleva inevitablemente hacia la cúpula dorada, de más de noventa metros de altura, que fue en su momento la quinta más alta del mundo. Los vitrales filtran la luz hacia el interior del edificio, creando una atmósfera solemne y vibrante. Justo debajo, la Estatua de La República , también obra de Angelo Zanelli, se alza con sus quince metros de bronce bañado en oro tras su restauración. Es considerada la tercera estatua bajo techo más grande del mundo. Representa a una figura femenina joven, de pie, vestida con una túnica, y armada con casco, escudo y lanza.
Frente a ella, incrustado en el suelo, se encuentra la réplica del diamante del Capitolio, envuelto en una historia misteriosa. El original está resguardado en las reservas del país. Este diamante marca el Kilómetro Cero, rodeado por una estrella de mármol multicolor, es el punto desde donde se mide Cuba.
From this central space, the grand Hall of Lost Steps extends north to south, the most monumental of any public building in the country. Measuring over 45 meters long and almost a quince tree wide, its ceilings are decorated with floral motifs, and its floors, composed of 58 varieties of marble, reflect the light entering through the immense windows. The large gilded chandeliers, the marble benches, and the light of the day create a subtle glow that seems to enliven the stone.
Each step creates a soft echo, as if the building were whispering its history. Hence its name. It is a space that invites recognition, contemplation, and allowing oneself to be enveloped by beauty.
Desde este espacio central se extiende, de norte a sur, el gran Salón de los Pasos Perdidos, el más monumental entre los espacios existentes en los edificios públicos del país. Con más de cuarenta y cinco metros de largo y casi quince de ancho, sus techos están decorados con motivos florales, y sus pisos, compuestos por cincuenta y ocho variedades de mármol, reflejan la luz que entra por los ventanales inmensos. Los grandes candelabros dorados, los bancos de mármol y la claridad del día provocan un brillo sutil que parece animar la piedra.
Cada paso genera un eco suave, como si el edificio susurrara su historia. De ahí su nombre. Es un espacio que invita al recogimiento, a la contemplación, a dejarse envolver por la belleza.
The Capitol is not a museum, even if it seems like one. It is a living organ of the State, a symbol of the nation. Inside is the headquarters of the National Assembly of People's Power. This visit was one of the most beautiful, instructive, and moving walks I've taken in Havana. I invite you to explore it, to experience it, to be touched by its grandeur and intimacy. El Capitolio no es un museo, aunque lo parezca. Es un órgano vivo del Estado, un símbolo de la nación. En su interior se encuentra la sede de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular.
