Obispo Street, a tour of surprises and crafts [ en/es]

Today I want to share a little bit of my afternoon with you. After finishing work, I headed to Old Havana since my husband was picking me up, and we went specifically to the boulevard on Obispo Street. I went with a simple mission: to buy a pair of sneakers. But you know how it is… you go for one thing and come back with several. In the end, I returned home with the sneakers and some sandals I found in the Patio de los Artesanos (Craftsmen's Courtyard), right on that same street.

Hoy quiero compartirles un pedacito de mi tarde. Después de terminar el trabajo, salí rumbo a La Habana Vieja aprovechando que mi esposo pasó por mi, y fuimos específicamente al boulevard de la calle Obispo. Iba con una misión sencilla: comprar un par de tenis. Pero ya saben cómo es esto… una va por una cosa y regresa con varias. Al final, volví a casa con los tenis y unas sandalias que encontré en el Patio de los Artesanos, justo en esa misma calle.
This time, as I mentioned, my husband accompanied me. He had endless patience while I went in and out of shops, trying on clothes, comparing colors, and feeling textures. With his usual calm demeanor, he kept up with me, smiling, as if he already knows that on these outings I always take unexpected turns; I go for one thing and end up buying something else entirely, haha. Walking along Obispo Street is, for me, one of the most delightful experiences this city offers. It has a warm, almost magical atmosphere that always draws me in. Although it's one of Havana's busiest streets, today it was surprisingly quiet, which allowed me to enjoy it more peacefully.
Esta vez como ya les dije me acompañó mi esposo, que tuvo una paciencia infinita mientras yo entraba y salía de tiendas, probándome modelos, comparando colores, tocando texturas. Él, con su calma habitual, me seguía el paso, sonriendo, como quien ya sabe que en estos paseos siempre tomo rumbos inesperados ; voy por algo y termino comprando otra cosa jj. Y es que caminar por Obispo es, para mí, una de las experiencias más sabrosas que ofrece esta ciudad. Tiene un aire cálido, casi mágico, que me atrae siempre. Aunque es una de las calles más populosas de La Habana, hoy estaba curiosamente tranquila, lo cual me permitió disfrutarla con más calma.
Its cobblestones, which have witnessed centuries of history, invite me to stroll leisurely, to look up and discover antique balconies, hidden stained-glass windows, and facades that tell stories. I went into several shops, curiously browsing among shelves and display cases, until I found a pair of sneakers I absolutely loved. They're my favorite style, the ones I wear on casual outings, walks with Pupy, or strolls along cobblestone streets. These particular ones stole my heart: they're blue and have a texture that mimics denim. And you know how much I love denim… it has that certain something that makes it simple, versatile, and relatable.
Sus adoquines, que han visto pasar siglos de historia, me invitan a caminar sin prisa, a mirar hacia arriba y descubrir balcones antiguos, vitrales escondidos, fachadas que cuentan historias. Entré en varias tiendas, curioseando entre estantes y vitrinas, hasta que encontré unos tenis que me encantaron. Son de mi modelo favorito, esos que me acompañan en salidas informales, paseos con Pupy o caminatas por calles empedradas. Estos en particular me robaron el corazón: son azules y tienen una textura que imita la mezclilla. Y ya saben cuánto me gusta la mezclilla… tiene ese no sé qué de lo sencillo, lo versátil, lo cercano.
But my stroll didn't end there. I kept walking, letting my curiosity guide me, until I reached the Patio de los Artesanos (Courtyard of the Artisans). That place is a universe unto itself. Every corner breathes creativity, hands working with love, unique pieces that seem to have a soul. Although I didn't linger too long—I was focused on finding some comfortable sandals—I couldn't help but glance at the nearby stalls. I'm fascinated by what they sell there: jewelry, paintings, textiles, ornaments, handbags, and, of course, shoes. I have a particular weakness for handcrafted handbags and shoes. I love knowing they're handmade, that each piece is unique, that the leather retains its scent and its history.
Pero mi paseo no terminó ahí. Seguí caminando, dejándome llevar por la curiosidad, hasta llegar al Patio de los Artesanos. Ese lugar es un universo en sí mismo. Cada rincón respira creatividad, manos que trabajan con amor, piezas únicas que parecen tener alma. Aunque no me detuve demasiado —iba enfocada en encontrar unas sandalias cómodas— no pude evitar echar un vistazo a los puestos cercanos. Me fascina lo que se vende allí: bisutería, cuadros, textiles, adornos, carteras y, por supuesto, zapatos. Tengo una debilidad especial por las carteras y los zapatos artesanales. Me encanta saber que están hechos a mano, que cada pieza es única, que el cuero conserva su olor y su historia.
Finally, I found the sandals I was looking for. Comfortable, beautiful, and with that handcrafted touch I value so much. I liked them so much, and they're so comfortable, I practically wear them. I'm thrilled with this unexpected find. We left that artisanal corner and continued walking a little further along Obispo Street, grateful that, for once, it wasn't so crowded. There are days when it's almost impossible to move through so many people, and you lose a bit of the magic. But today, the street gave us its best version: peaceful, bright, with that timeless charm I love so much.
Finalmente, encontré las sandalias que buscaba. Cómodas, bonitas y con ese toque artesanal que tanto valoro. Me gustaron tanto y son tan cómodas que me las lleve puestas, estoy contenta con esta adquisición inesperada. Salimos de ese rincón artesanal y seguimos caminando un poco más por Obispo, agradecidos de que, por una vez, no estuviera tan abarrotada. Hay días en que es casi imposible avanzar entre tanta gente, y se pierde un poco la magia. Pero hoy, la calle nos regaló su mejor versión: tranquila, luminosa, con ese encanto atemporal que tanto me gusta.
