Atarés Castle with Havana at its feet [en/es]
The Castle of Santo Domingo de Atarés… although I will soon learn that its name is not entirely accurate. It is not a castle in the technical sense, as it lacks bastions. What rises on this Havana hill is a fort, a defensive battery that has stood the test of time with discreet dignity. And yet, its entrance has something of a ceremony about it.
This fort was built between 1763 and 1767, after the English occupation of Havana, with the aim of reinforcing the city's defensive system. It was part of a trilogy of fortresses along with the Castillo del Príncipe and La Cabaña. Located on Loma de Soto, at the end of the bay, it allowed for surveillance of land and sea access, quartering troops, and serving as an observation point thanks to its elevated position.
El Castillo de Santo Domingo de Atarés… aunque pronto aprendí que su nombre no es del todo preciso. No es un castillo en sentido técnico, pues carece de baluartes. Lo que se alza sobre esta colina habanera es un fuerte, una batería defensiva que ha resistido el paso del tiempo con discreta dignidad. Y, sin embargo, su entrada tiene algo de ceremonia.
Este fuerte fue construido entre 1763 y 1767, tras la ocupación inglesa de La Habana, con el objetivo de reforzar el sistema defensivo de la ciudad. Formaba parte de una trilogía de fortalezas junto al Castillo del Príncipe y La Cabaña. Ubicado en la Loma de Soto, al fondo de la bahía, permitía vigilar los accesos terrestres y marítimos, alojar tropas y servir como punto de observación gracias a su posición elevada.
The approach begins along a steep path, flanked by wild vegetation and the distant murmur of the city. As you ascend, you feel the air change, the view clear, revealing parts of the bay and the city that fades away. The architecture of the fort begins to dominate. The moat suddenly appears, deep, like a symbolic border. We cross it on a wooden drawbridge that still preserves its original structure and the mechanism that operates it. It seems to invite us to leave the city behind and enter another time.
El acceso comienza por un camino empinado, flanqueado por vegetación silvestre y el rumor lejano de la ciudad. A medida que se asciende, se siente cómo el aire cambia, cómo la vista se despeja y deja ver partes de la bahía y de una ciudad que se aleja. La arquitectura del fuerte comienza a imponerse. In the center, the parade ground greets us with its sober geometry. It's an open space, almost austere, yet steeped in history. There, the walls speak silently, and each stone seems to have heard orders, footsteps, and waiting. There's a sense of military order that pervades the building.
En el centro, la plaza de armas nos recibe con su geometría sobria. Es un espacio abierto, casi austero, pero cargado de historia. Allí, los muros hablan en silencio, y cada piedra parece haber escuchado órdenes, pasos, esperas. Hay una sensación de orden militar que impera en la edificación.
From there, a staircase leads us to the rooftop, the fort's true viewing platform. And it's here that the visit is transformed. The city unfolds like a living model. As far as the eye can see, you can see part of the bay, the elevated railway lines, the Tallapiedra thermoelectric plant, the Capitol... everything seems within reach. Binoculars are installed that allow you to zoom in even further, and for a moment, you feel you can touch the ships, follow the path of the avenues, decipher the rooftops.
Desde allí, una escalera nos conduce a la azotea, el verdadero mirador del fuerte. Y es aquí donde la visita se transforma. La ciudad se despliega como una maqueta viva. Hasta donde la vista alcanza, se observa parte de la bahía, los elevados de líneas ferroviarias, la termoeléctrica Tallapiedra, el Capitolio… todo parece al alcance de la mano. Hay unos prismáticos instalados que permiten acercar aún más los detalles, y por un momento, uno siente que puede tocar los barcos, seguir el trazo de las avenidas, descifrar los tejados.
The roof also reveals modern interventions that engage with the original structure. Glass-covered skylights peek out between the slabs, allowing natural light to penetrate the fort's interior. They are like contemporary eyes that illuminate memory. At each of the four corners, the observation posts—turrets—from which the guards surveyed the horizon remain. Although they are empty today, they still seem to watch over the city from above.
La azotea también revela intervenciones modernas que conviven con la estructura original. Claraboyas cubiertas con cristal se asoman entre las losas, permitiendo que la luz natural penetre hacia el interior del fuerte. Son como ojos contemporáneos que iluminan la memoria. En cada una de las cuatro esquinas se conservan los puestos de observación, torrecillas, desde donde los guardias vigilaban el horizonte. Aunque hoy están vacías, aún parecen custodiar la ciudad desde lo alto.
The light on the rooftop is generous, and the wind carries echoes of the sea. It's a place to pause, to gaze leisurely. I stayed there for a long time, letting my gaze sweep over the entire city, which, the more I explored, the more I realized how much I still had yet to explore. I took several photos, but this time I preferred to spend more time observing, imagining, and recording.
La luz en la azotea es generosa, y el viento trae consigo ecos de mar. Es un lugar para detenerse, para mirar sin prisa. Me quedé allí un buen rato, dejando que la vista pasara por toda esa ciudad que, mientras más la recorro, más me doy cuenta de cuánto me falta aún por conocerla toda. Tomé varias fotos, pero en esta ocasión preferí dedicar más tiempo a observar, imaginar, guardar.
