An unexpected find in the city / Un hallazgo inesperado en la ciudad
First of all, I wish you a wonderful day and a happy weekend, which is just around the corner. These days, my business, Chocolates Alile, has required a lot of attention, especially with Father's Day approaching. Even so, I had to make time to help my mom update her bank accounts. Navigating new payment methods isn't easy for her, so I always try to guide her because I want her to maintain her independence and control over her finances.
As usual, the bank was crowded, and the wait was long. Luckily, we found a place to sit, and from there we could see gardens filled with vibrant flowers. The recent rains have made the colors even more intense, turning that moment of tedious waiting into a brief pause to enjoy the beauty around us.
Antes que nada, les deseo un maravilloso día y un feliz fin de semana, que ya está a la vuelta de la esquina. Últimamente, mi negocio, Chocolates Alile, ha requerido mucha atención, sobre todo con la llegada del Día del Padre. Aun así, tuve que sacar tiempo para ayudar a mi mamá a actualizar sus cuentas bancarias. No le resulta fácil navegar con nuevos métodos de pago, así que siempre intento guiarla porque quiero que mantenga su independencia y control sobre sus finanzas.
Como siempre, el banco estaba abarrotado y la espera fue larga. Por suerte, encontramos un sitio donde sentarnos, y desde allí pudimos ver jardines llenos de flores vibrantes. Las recientes lluvias han intensificado aún más los colores, convirtiendo esa tediosa espera en una breve pausa para disfrutar de la belleza que nos rodea.
Upon leaving, we took a route I often take, but this time I noticed something I'd never looked at closely before. Across the street from the Tulipán agricultural market, there was an impressive relief on the exterior wall of a house. It was a stone representation of the island of Cuba, with a phrase written above the archipelago: "For my flag, my culture, my country, I am here." The mural also featured elements such as flowers, doves, and a Cuban flag, while in one of its corners was inscribed with the phrase "Dominoes are played here." I thought it was a wonderful touch, as dominoes are a traditional Cuban game, present in parks and at family gatherings.
Al salir, tomamos una ruta que suelo recorrer con frecuencia, pero esta vez noté algo que nunca antes había observando con detenimiento , al otro lado de la calle del Agro mercado de Tulipán, había un impresionante relieve en la pared exterior de una casa. Era una representación en piedra de la isla de Cuba, con una frase escrita sobre el archipiélago: «Por mi bandera, mi cultura, mi país, estoy aquí». El mural también presentaba elementos como flores, palomas y una bandera cubana, mientras que en una de sus esquinas estaba inscrita la frase «Aquí se juega al dominó». Me pareció un detalle maravilloso, ya que el dominó es un juego tradicional cubano, presente en parques y reuniones familiares.
Curious about the work, I asked some neighbors, who told me that an artist lives in that house, a woodcarver who has decorated its facade with various sculptures. I approached the patio gate and discovered a group of carved wooden statues, wearing colorful robes that seemed linked to the Yoruba religion and Afro-Cuban traditions. I also noticed two flags painted on the wall, one of Cuba and the other of Haiti, suggesting a cultural connection between the two nations.
Curioso por la obra, pregunté a unos vecinos, quienes me contaron que en esa casa vive un artista, un tallador de madera que ha decorado su fachada con diversas esculturas. Me acerqué a la puerta del patio y descubrí un grupo de estatuas de madera tallada, vestidas con túnicas coloridas que parecían estar vinculadas a la religión yoruba y las tradiciones afrocubanas. También noté dos banderas pintadas en la pared, una de Cuba y otra de Haití, lo que sugiere una conexión cultural entre ambas naciones.
On the sidewalk in front of the house, there was a tree trunk with a painting depicting multiple faces. The blue and gold tones gave it a mystical air. In Yoruba tradition, blue is often associated with water and deities like Yemaya, while gold represents power and divinity. I found it fascinating to imagine the story behind each piece.
En la acera frente a la casa, había un tronco con una pintura que representaba múltiples rostros. Los tonos azules y dorados le daban un aire místico. En la tradición yoruba, el azul suele asociarse con el agua y deidades como Yemayá, mientras que el dorado representa el poder y la divinidad. Me fascinó imaginar la historia detrás de cada pieza.
Although I wasn't able to meet the artist in person, his work left a pleasant impression on me. As I continued along the path, I followed my mother, admiring nature and the beautiful seasonal flowers. What began as a routine errand ended up becoming a walk full of discoveries, where art and nature took center stage. It was an unexpected artistic display in the middle of a day that, at first, seemed like just a trip to run errands.
Aunque no pude conocer al artista en persona, su obra me causó una grata impresión. Mientras seguía el camino, junto a mi madre, admirando la naturaleza y las hermosas flores de temporada. Lo que empezó como un recado rutinario terminó convirtiéndose en un paseo lleno de descubrimientos, donde el arte y la naturaleza fueron los protagonistas. Fue una exhibición artística inesperada en medio de un día que, al principio, parecía solo un paseo para hacer recados.
