An old house in Havana, which includes an art gallery [en/es]
Walking down Amargura Street between San Ignacio and Mercaderes, I discovered an imposing dark wood and copper plated gate, on a stone facade and turned wood balconies painted green from which hung some green branches and I always like to see this contrast in this part of the city where vegetation is not abundant, so visually it is much appreciated. I approached and met a lady who was taking care of the place and she explained to me that it was a project for children called "Proyecto Fiñes".
Caminando por la calle Amargura entre San Ignacio y Mercaderes, descubrí un imponente portón de madera oscura y enchapes de cobre, en una fachada de piedra y balcones de madera torneada pintados de verde del cual pendian algunas ramas verdes y siempre me gusta mucho ver este contraste en esta parte de la ciudad donde no abunda la vegetación , asi que visualmente se agradece mucho. Me acerqué y encontré a una señora que cuidaba el lugar y me explicó que se trataba de un proyecto para niños llamado "Proyecto Fiñes".
The facade caught my attention so much that I decided to go in. The place has several rooms with sculptures on display. The halls have large windows like any colonial house, providing great light and ventilation. The wooden ceiling painted in blue, I really like these types of ceilings that abound in these buildings.
The sculptures that are exposed, were rescued by the Historian of the city among them one of great size of a woman's body dressed in Roman style, they were located in a fountain of the Carlos III Avenue, in front of the Quinta de los Molinos, before its modernization according to the writing that accompanies them.
Me llamó tanto la atención la fachada que decidí entrar. El lugar cuenta con varias salas, con esculturas expuestas. Los salones cuentan con amplios ventanales como toda casa colonial, brindando una gran luminosidad y ventilación. El Techo de madera pintado en azul , me gustan mucho estos tipos de techos que abundan en estas edificaciones.
Las esculturas que se exponen, fueron rescatadas por el Historiador de la ciudad entre ellas una de gran tamaño de un cuerpo de mujer vestido con estilo romano, estaban ubicadas en una fuente de la Avenida Carlos III, frente a la Quinta de los Molinos, antes de su modernización según dice el escrito que las acompaña.
There are arches at the entrances to the different rooms and I noticed that some of the walls had exposed bricks, forming part of the exhibition by showing the composition of the walls of this old house.
Existen arcos en las entradas de las diferentes salas y me percaté de que algunas paredes tenian los ladrillos expuestos, formando parte de la exposición al mostrar la composición de las paredes de esta antigua casa.
Another room is devoted to photographs, with beautiful images of different buildings in the city, interiors and views from different angles. It is understandable that, being a gallery for children, the photographs are placed at a lower height, halfway up the wall.
Otra sala está destinada a fotografías, con hermosas imágenes de diferentes edificaciones de la ciudad, interiores y vistas desde diversos ángulos. Es comprensible que, al ser una galería para niños, las fotografías estén colocadas a una altura más baja, a mitad de la pared.
What I loved most about the place was the old building itself, although I like galleries, but this house is amazing. In the center, there is a patio typical of colonial houses with abundant vegetation in different pots and a cistern. Although I have seen another one before, one in the Castillo del Jagua, in Cienfuegos, this one surprised me a lot, I did not expect it in the center of the city, although storing rainwater was common in past centuries.
Lo que más me encantó del lugar fue la antigua edificación en sí, aunque me gustan las galerias , pero esta casa es sorprendente. En el centro, hay un patio típico de las casas coloniales con abundante vegetación en diferentes macetas y un aljibe. Aunque he visto otro antes, uno en el Castillo del Jagua, en Cienfuegos, este me sorprendió mucho, no lo esperaba en el centro de la ciudad , aunque almacenar agua de lluvia era común en siglos pasados.
A fact that I have not mentioned is that this old house has apartments on the upper floors, inhabited by different families, while the lower part is used as a gallery. I would love to live in a place like this, where you have a daily encounter with culture.
But the most surprising thing about this place is that, during the repair and restoration work, when the walls were uncovered, tapestries of Arab origin were discovered. The lady who takes care of the place tells us that Eusebio Leal, with great care, had these tapestries rescued. The walls look beautiful with this centuries-old work.
Un dato que no les he mencionado es que esta antigua casa conserva apartamentos en los pisos superiores, habitados por diferentes familias, mientras que la parte de abajo se utiliza como galería. Me encantaría vivir en un lugar así, donde se tiene un encuentro diario con la cultura.
Pero lo más sorprendente de este lugar es que, durante los trabajos de reparación y restauración, al descolchar las paredes, se descubrieron tapices de origen árabe. La señora que cuida el lugar nos cuenta que Eusebio Leal, con gran cuidado, hizo que se rescataran estos tapices. Las paredes lucen hermosas con ese trabajo de siglos atrás.
I was walking and talking with the lady who takes care of the place, very willing to give me information, I did not want to leave the place. The tapestries on the walls and especially the central courtyard with its cistern captured my attention powerfully, besides there was a sense of peace inside that place, very contrasting with the hustle and bustle that is always very close in those streets of Old Havana.
Estuve caminando y conversando con la señora que cuida el lugar, muy dispuesta a darme información, no quería dejar el lugar. Los tapices de las paredes y sobre todo el patio central con su aljibe me llamaron poderosamente la atención, además se respiraba una sensación de paz dentro de ese lugar, muy contrastante con el bullicio que siempre está muy cerca en esas calles de la Habana Vieja.
