A stroll through the halls of the Manzana de Gómez (en/es)

Hello Wednesday Walk friends!
A few days ago, after finishing my shift at Chocolates Alile, I decided to meet my husband. We had planned to visit his brother, who lives in Old Havana. I took a taxi and got off on the Prado, very close to Central Park. To get to his office, I had to walk through the Manzana de Gómez, a building that occupies an entire city block and holds a fascinating history.

Hace unos días, al terminar mi jornada en Chocolates Alile, decidí ir al encuentro de mi esposo. Habíamos quedado en visitar juntos a su hermano, que vive en La Habana Vieja. Tomé un taxi y me bajé en el Prado, muy cerca del Parque Central. Para llegar a su oficina, debía atravesar la Manzana de Gómez, una edificación que ocupa toda una manzana y guarda una historia fascinante.

It was built in the early 20th century and was the first European-style shopping mall in Cuba. With its diagonal passageways, columns inspired by the Palacio del Segundo Cabo, and eclectic architecture, it always seemed like a magical place to me. As a young man, I used to go there whenever I wanted to buy something special. I remember walking through its corridors as if they were secret tunnels leading me to beautiful worlds. It was more than just a building: it was that landmark that, when you wanted to pinpoint the center of Havana, almost immediately came to mind; La Manzana de Gómez.

Fue construida a principios del siglo XX y fue el primer centro comercial de estilo europeo en Cuba. Con sus pasadizos diagonales, sus columnas inspiradas en el Palacio del Segundo Cabo y su arquitectura ecléctica, siempre me pareció un lugar mágico. De joven, solía ir allí cuando quería comprar algo especial. Recuerdo caminar por sus pasillos como si fueran túneles secretos que me llevaban a mundos hermosos. Era más que un edificio: era ese punto que, cuando querías marcar el centro de La Habana, te venía casi instantáneamente a la mente; La Manzana de Gómez.

In 2017, a significant investment was made to restore this venerable building and return it to its former glory. Today, the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski, a five-star establishment that coexists with the memories of generations, stands atop its former ground floor, once filled with shops. On one of its current walls is a map outlining all the entrances and exits of the complex, as if the building itself wanted to tell its own story.

En 2017 se realizó una gran inversión para restaurar este vetusto edificio y devolverle el esplendor que tuvo en épocas pasadas. Hoy, sobre su primera planta llena de tiendas, se alza el Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski, un cinco estrellas que convive con la memoria de generaciones. En una de sus paredes actuales hay un croquis que describe todas las entradas y salidas del complejo, como si el edificio quisiera contarnos su propia historia.

Walking through those corridors, I couldn't help but notice the large shopping complex occupying the ground floor. Most of the shops are dedicated to selling handcrafted items, and I was delighted to see those beautiful and select stores coming back to life. Some were open, their windows well-kept and details inviting you to enter. I paused for a moment right in the center of the passageways, and looking up, I was struck by the contrast with the walls of the very modern and elegant hotel, where my memories and the present moment met.

Pasando por esos pasillos no pude dejar de observar el gran complejo de tiendas que ocupa la planta baja. La mayoría de ellas están dedicadas a la venta de objetos artesanales, y me alegró mucho ver cómo aquellas tiendas bonitas y selectas iban recobrando vida. Algunas estaban abiertas, con sus vitrinas bien cuidadas y detalles que invitaban a entrar. Me detuve un momento justo en el centro de los pasadizos, y al mirar hacia arriba, me impresionó el contraste de las paredes del muy moderno y elegante hotel , que hace que mis recuerdos y la contemporaneidad se dieran la mano en ese mismo punto.

This time, when I crossed it, I didn't do it just to take a shortcut—although that's still a practical reality. I did it to reconnect with my memories, which accompany me every time I pass by as if it had never left. And also, of course, to take some photos and join my friend @tattoodjay's #wednesdaywalk challenge.

Esta vez, al atravesarlo, no lo hice solo para cortar camino—aunque esa sigue siendo una realidad práctica. Lo hice para reencontrarme con mis recuerdos, que cada vez que paso cerca de allí me acompañan como si nunca se hubieran ido. This grand building is surrounded by other beautiful ones, each with its own story, such as the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Bacardi Building, and so many others that grace this part of Havana. I never tire of admiring it. Every corner seems to tell a story, and walking here always transports me to another time.

Este gran edificio está rodeado de otros muy bonitos que también guardan sus propias historias, como el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, el edificio Bacardí y tantos otros que embellecen esta zona de La Habana. No me canso de admirarla. Cada rincón parece contarnos algo , y caminar por aquí siempre me lleva a otros tiempos.
