A green corner of Havana / Un rincón verde de La Habana
A few days ago, after leaving work, I decided to take a slight detour from my usual route. The sun was still high in the sky, and everything was bathed in that warm light that beautifies even the most ordinary places. That's when I passed by Havana's Metropolitan Park, and I couldn't resist stopping for a moment, taking a deep breath, and appreciating nature in this serene atmosphere. I took the opportunity to snap a few photos, which I'm sharing with you today as part of the #wednesdaywalk challenge, an initiative that our friend @tattoodjay proposes every week to help us reconnect with our surroundings.
Hace unos días, al salir del trabajo, decidí tomar un pequeño desvío en mi camino habitual. El sol aún se encontraba alto, y todo se envolvía en esa luz cálida que embellece hasta los rincones más cotidianos. Fue entonces cuando pasé cerca del Parque Metropolitano de La Habana, y no pude resistirme a detenerme un instante, respirar profundo y apreciar la naturaleza en esta atmósfera serena. Aproveché para tomar algunas fotos que hoy comparto con ustedes como parte del reto de #wednesdaywalk, una iniciativa que cada semana nos propone nuestro amigo @tattoodjay para reconectar con nuestro entorno.
Located in the west-central part of the city, Metropolitan Park stretches along the Almendares River, between the municipalities of Plaza de la Revolución and Playa. It is considered Havana's main green lung, with more than 700 hectares of wooded areas, gardens, trails, and recreational spaces. This park is a natural refuge in the midst of the urban hustle and bustle, a place where the city seems to pause to take a breath.
Ubicado en el centro-oeste de la ciudad, el Parque Metropolitano se extiende a lo largo del río Almendares, entre los municipios de Plaza de la Revolución y Playa. Es considerado el principal pulmón verde de La Habana, con más de 700 hectáreas de áreas boscosas, jardines, senderos y espacios recreativos. Este parque es un refugio natural en medio del bullicio urbano, un lugar donde la ciudad parece detenerse para respirar.
A road winds through the vegetation, gliding smoothly between trees and clearings, as if it too wanted to be part of the landscape. At the point where the bridge crosses the Almendares River to connect the two municipalities, this road briefly disappears into a small tunnel that runs through the base of the bridge. That moment, as you pass through it, has something magical about it, and for a moment it seems as if you've entered another world.
Una vía serpentea entre la vegetación, deslizándose con suavidad entre árboles y claros, como si también ella quisiera formar parte del paisaje. En el punto donde el puente cruza el río Almendares para unir los dos municipios, esta vía se sumerge brevemente en un pequeño túnel que atraviesa la base del puente. Ese instante, al pasar por allí, tiene algo de mágico y por un momento parece que entramos en otro mundo.
What captivates me most about the park is its lush vegetation. Centuries-old trees stand majestically, forming a green canopy that filters the light and cools the air. Ferns, shrubs, and wildflowers intertwine in a vibrant display of life that changes with each season. The singing of the birds and the murmur of the river complete a natural symphony that invites contemplation and relaxation.
Lo que más me cautiva del parque es su vegetación exuberante. Árboles centenarios se alzan majestuosos, formando una bóveda verde que filtra la luz y refresca el ambiente. Helechos, arbustos y flores silvestres se entrelazan en un espectáculo de vida que cambia con cada estación. El canto de las aves y el murmullo del río completan una sinfonía natural que invita a la contemplación y al descanso.
Beyond its beauty, the Metropolitan Park serves a vital function: it regulates the local climate, protects biodiversity, and provides a space for recreation, sports, and community gatherings. It's a place where families, artists, readers, and dreamers coexist. It's a space that reminds us that nature also has a place in the city, and that caring for it means caring for ourselves.
Además de su belleza, el Parque Metropolitano cumple una función vital; regula el clima local, protege la biodiversidad y ofrece un espacio para la recreación, el deporte y el encuentro comunitario. Es un lugar donde conviven familias, artistas, lectores y soñadores. Un espacio que nos recuerda que la naturaleza también tiene un lugar en la ciudad, y que cuidarla es cuidarnos a nosotros mismos.
Today I joyfully join this community of walkers and observers, sharing a little piece of this corner of Havana that inspires me so much. Because sometimes, all it takes is looking around to discover that beauty is closer than we imagine.
