Las canciones, interpretadas con ritmos cubanos, tenían un sentido especial. Algunos eran villancicos adaptados, pero existían también composiciones que nacían desde lo nuestro: décimas bien hiladas, versos cargados de poesía popular y melodías del punto guajiro, la guitarra campesina y voces que vienen del campo. Se convirtió en un anuncio del nacimiento de Jesús con ese sabor criollo y fue, cuanto menos, conmovedor.

La escenografía acompañaba con decoraciones sencillas pero hermosas, llenas de símbolos que conectaban con el campo cubano, con los bohíos y con un verdadero guateque cubano. Uno de los momentos más emotivos fue la pequeña muestra de ballet cubano, integrada de manera natural dentro de la obra, recordando a la gran Alicia Alonso, nuestra prima ballerina. Fue un recordatorio de la riqueza cultural de nuestro pueblo con distintas manifestaciones artísticas en una misma historia. Ver el ballet y el flamenco compartiendo escenario con el punto guajiro y la décima fue, sin dudas, una metáfora perfecta de lo que somos como nación: mezcla, resistencia y creatividad.

Y como si la obra quisiera cerrar con una sonrisa cómplice hacia el público, los últimos minutos nos regalaron un final inesperadamente… cubano. Justo cuando faltaban unos cinco minutos para concluir la presentación, se fue la luz. Un apagón total. Por un instante hubo silencio, y luego el público rompió en aplausos fuertes y decididos para que los artistas pudieran sentir el amor y la admiración que intentaban transmitirles. Porque si algo nos define es la capacidad de seguir adelante incluso cuando las circunstancias nos ponen a prueba. No matter how many times I cross those doors, it continues to be for me a place of respect, beauty, and tranquility. In recent days I had the opportunity to return to that cultural temple to witness a Christmas Ecumenical Celebration, and I confess that I left pleasantly surprised.

The proposal was clear and original: to represent the birth of the Baby Jesus as if it had occurred in Cuba, with an aesthetic and a sensitivity markedly guajira, typical of our land. The audience was transported to a different manger, where the Christian tradition embraced our peasant roots, our music, and our very authentic way of feeling life. The main reason for this very peculiar idea was based on the history of our country, which has always been marked to a great extent by Christian religions in all their ramifications.

The songs, performed with Cuban rhythms, had a special meaning. Some were adapted carols, but there were also compositions that were born from what is ours: well-crafted décimas, verses laden with popular poetry, and melodies of punto guajiro, the peasant guitar, and voices that come from the countryside. It became an announcement of the birth of Jesus with that Creole flavor and was, at the very least, moving.

The scenery accompanied with simple but beautiful decorations, full of symbols that connected with the Cuban countryside, with the bohíos and with a true Cuban guateque. The presence of our Spanish roots was demonstrated, not as an imposed element, but as a living part of Cuban identity, and what better way than through a classic flamenco dance. Everything was carefully thought out so that the message would arrive from emotion and respect.

One of the most emotional moments was the small display of Cuban ballet, naturally integrated into the work, recalling the great Alicia Alonso, our prima ballerina. It was a reminder of the cultural richness of our people with different artistic manifestations in a single story. Seeing ballet and flamenco sharing the stage with punto guajiro and the décima was, without a doubt, a perfect metaphor of what we are as a nation: mixture, resistance, and creativity.

And as if the work wanted to close with a complicit smile toward the audience, the last minutes gave us an unexpectedly… Cuban ending. Just when about five minutes were left to conclude the performance, the power went out. A total blackout. For an instant there was silence, and then the audience burst into strong and determined applause so that the artists could feel the love and admiration they were trying to convey to them. Because if something defines us, it is the ability to move forward even when circumstances put us to the test. There was no annoyance, there was understanding, and even a certain pride in knowing ourselves capable of laughing at our own difficulties. I left the Sauto Theater with a strange and beautiful sensation at the same time, a mixture of nostalgia, hope, and gratitude. In complex times, where it is not always easy to keep one’s spirits high, encounters like this remind me that culture, faith, and identity can be both refuge and engine. That even in the midst of blackouts, shortages, and daily challenges, we continue creating, singing, and dreaming.

Facing the new year, my wish is simple but profound. May we not lose the ability to believe, to unite, and to express the best of ourselves through art. May brighter times come, but in the meantime may we know how to light our own lights, as happened that night at the Sauto Theater.
