Jesús David Curbelo: Eros and Narrative [Review] (Eng-Esp)

There are books I never lend, books I keep wrapped up inside my own house to avoid the prying eyes of the curious. This is the case with Diary of a Newly Hunted Poet, just as you see it, hunted, because it's not the book by Juan Ramón Jiménez. I dedicate my review to one of the novels by the Camagüeyan poet, narrator, critic, and translator Jesús David Curbelo.

The first time I saw the author was at a poetry reading. I was a pre-university student, and one of my dearest friends knew about the event organized by the Provincial Center for Books and Literature in Camagüey. I don't know if Jesús David Curbelo was already living in Havana at that time. Every now and then, Lester, my friend, would stop to look at my face, surely drawn by the magnetism of that incisive poet's verses.

Time passed, and while I was at university, another great friend gave me the book I'm reviewing today for my birthday, a book I've treasured ever since. I swear, at first I thought it was a collection of short stories, as I read them out of order, as I usually do with that genre. Later, I realized that, although there wasn't an intrinsic connection between the stories, the overall reading experience conveyed a novelistic feel, and I accepted it as such.

Diary of a Newly Hunted Poet is an erotic book that recounts the sexual experiences of Julio Dámaso Cabrera, its protagonist, a writer from a humble background, with nothing to offer women beyond the magnetism he exerts on them and his willingness to indulge any sexual fantasy. Dámaso is an seductive man, a womanizer, a drunkard, immature, but with a great deal of self-respect and a devastatingly vast knowledge. He is an open-minded, free-spirited man who, nevertheless, after a failed and traumatic first marriage, remarries. As he explains, after separating from his mother, he sought refuge in other women who also wanted to breastfeed me, overprotect me, dictate my actions, and offer me behavioral patterns for facing the world. Life presents him with women of all kinds, from diverse social backgrounds, but always open-minded enough to "hook" him. Similarly, the author's experience as a translator is revealed in numerous literary references. Therefore, even if you, as the reader, believe you are merely witnessing the sexual follies of a deranged individual, the reading becomes a truly enriching intellectual exercise. Curbelo, moreover, possesses a mastery of language that allows him to write without repetition, to create lustful, yet not indecent, imagery, to play with words—in short, to make full use of language.

Throughout the pages, you will find homosexual, polyamorous, and zoophilic relationships, some lasting, others fleeting. The narratives, of course, are always in the first person, so we are easily immersed in the thoughts of a cultured, yet basic, man, guided above all by his most primal instincts, who, after numerous missteps, gets filthy drunk time and again. The entire narrative unfolds in the 1990s, an era euphemistically termed the "Special Period" in Cuba, during which Cubans witnessed the beginnings of a devastating structural crisis.

Diary of a Newly Hunted Poet is a novel that will provide you with much distraction due to its marked eroticism and its well-woven humor, its multiple intertextual references, its ideological intricacies, its stark vision of social reality. Hay libros que nunca presto, libros que mantengo forrados dentro de mi propia casa para despistar la mirada de los curiosos. Este es el caso de Diario de un poeta recién cazado, así como lo ve, cazado, porque no se trata del libro de Juan Ramón Jiménez. Mi reseña la dedico a una de las novelas del poeta, narrador, crítico y traductor camagüeyano Jesús David Curbelo.

La primera vez que vi al autor fue en un recital de poesía. Yo era estudiante de preuniversitario y uno de mis amigos más queridos supo de la actividad programada por el Centro Provincial del Libro y la Literatura en Camagüey. No sé si para esa fecha ya Jesús David Curbelo viviría en La Habana. De vez en vez, Lester, mi amigo, se detenía a mirar mi cara, seguramente atraída por el magnetismo que provocaban los versos de aquel poeta certerísimo.

Pasó el tiempo y, ya en la universidad, otro gran amigo me obsequió en mi cumpleaños el libro que les reseño hoy y que he guardado con tanto celo desde entonces. Juro que al principio pensé se trataba de un libro de cuentos, pues leí las historias de manera desordenada, como solía hacer con esta forma genérica. Después me percaté de que, aunque no había una relación intrínseca entre una historia y otra, la lectura en su conjunto transmitía una sensación novelesca y lo asumí como tal.

Diario de un poeta recién cazado es un libro erótico que recoge las experiencias sexuales de Julio Dámaso Cabrera, su protagonista, un escritor de clase humilde, sin nada que ofrecer a las mujeres, más allá del magnetismo que causa en ellas y de su mansedumbre para complacer cualquier fantasía sexual. Dámaso es un hombre seductor, mujeriego, borrachín, inmaduro, pero con mucho amor propio y una cultura demoledora. Es un hombre de mentalidad abierta, de espíritu libre, que, sin embargo, luego de un primer matrimonio fallido y traumático vuelve a casarse. Según explica, después de separarse de su madre buscó refugio en otras mujeres que también quisieron amamantarme, sobreprotegerme, dictaminar mis actos y ofrecerme patrones de conducta para enfrentar el mundo. Su segundo matrimonio es un fracaso total y el poeta vuelve a quedar atrapado en la madeja de la frustración y la monotonía.

Así pues, lo que salva a Dámaso de morir (metafóricamente, claro) es su experiencia extramatrimonial. La vida le va poniendo delante mujeres de todo tipo, de diversa procedencia social, pero siempre de mentalidad lo suficientemente abierta como para “engancharlo”. Repárese en los títulos de las historias y saltarán ante sus ojos obras conocidas de la literatura universal.

De igual manera, la experiencia del autor como traductor se revela en numerosas referencias literarias. Por tanto, aunque usted como lector crea que solo asiste a las locuras sexuales de un desatinado, la lectura se convierte en un ejercicio intelectivo realmente enriquecedor. Curbelo, además, tiene un dominio del lenguaje que le permite escribir sin repetirse, crear imágenes lúbricas, pero no indecentes, jugar con las palabras, en fin… servirse del idioma.

Por las sucesivas páginas podrá encontrar relaciones homosexuales, poliamorosas, zoofílicas, con algo de duración o fugaces. Las narraciones, por supuesto, siempre son en primera persona, por lo que nos sumergimos sin dificultad en los pensamientos de un hombre culto, pero básico, guiado sobre todo por los instintos más rupestres, que, tras múltiples equivocaciones, se emborracha de manera inmunda una y otra vez. Toda la diégesis tiene como escenario los años noventa del siglo anterior, una época que fue llamada eufemísticamente en Cuba “Período Especial” y en la cual los cubanos asistimos a los inicios de una crisis estructural devastadora.

Diario de un poeta recién cazado es una novela que le proporcionará mucha distracción por su marcado erotismo, su humor bien entretejido, sus múltiples intertextualidades, sus vericuetos ideológicos, su visión descarnada de la realidad social. En 1998 este volumen resultó merecedor del Premio José Soler Puig. Su autor es una de las voces imprescindibles de la literatura cubana actual.
