Maledictus Terra Book 3: Vetitum Nemus Part 81

Greetings all

Sorry for the late update, my day has been a little insane. Anyway, I hope your week has been marvelous, and you have nothing but a relaxing weekend going forward.

Don't forget to read @zakludick's update before getting stuck in mine.

The dark-skinned elf stepped from the ship with a hand shielding her eyes. She hardly looked phased by several transformed creatures, a speared man, and the princess of the realm gathered on her doorstep.

Snorting her displeasure, Sylthra leapt from the ship to land on the gangway. She then made her way down to the group of people.

Somehow, Robert’s curse seemed to have frozen. In fact, the grotesque arm had a slight tremor to it.

“You. Revenant.” Snapped Sylthra. “Step back.”

Mortis did as ordered, making sure he kept Magna behind him, but not preventing her from seeing what was unfolding before them.

“I see. Now I understand why you two louts offered the amount of money you did before I could start haggling.” She snorted and flicked Robert’s forehead.
Robert made to say something, but found that he was completely frozen in this half-attack stance. Realising that the half-transformed man was going nowhere, Millmor and Rex stepped back. Noxus viewed the elf with distrust.

“What have you cast?” she demanded.

“Oh pfft!” Sylthra waved the mage off. “It’s not my spell. It’s a glyph.”

Sylthra lifted a sleeve of her shirt to show a series of runes that littered her dark skin. While at first glance, Noxus thought them to be tattoos, but then realised they were ritual scars, and one of the runes was glowing white.

“Halt or hold, depending on how you translate the texts.” Said Sylthra with a grin.
She then pointed to Millmor and Gorox. “You two will be staying in the hold. I will not have whatever affliction that man is suffering from interfering with our trip or my crew. If he steps one foot out of line, he goes overboard with a stone tied around his neck.”

Magna nodded her head. While this party would be traveling along the river for now, soon they would be out in open water with no help. Robert would be a danger if he did transform.

Sylthra, noticing the princess agreeing, she grinned.

“Nice to see that royalty will do what it takes to get the job done. You’re the oldest of the twins. Magna, right?”

“Princess.” Corrected Noxus.

Magna snorted and commented. “My boots are covered in river slime, there is nothing princessy about this business.”

“Oh, I like you. I see why you have the protection of Belum and Mortis.”

Without allowing Magna to ask her how she knew of either of those names, Sylthra turned to address her crew.

“Get our guests aboard so we can leave within the hour.”

Magna was not able to catch the captain’s eye after that. When she tried to go after her, Mortis only lay a hand on her shoulder and shook his head slightly.
“Gorox isn’t completely right, nor is he completely wrong. I don’t think we are dealing with a normal elf.”

Trustworthy?

Mortis turned to Derric, who was shaking muck from his paws. He knew the young man saw far more than others gave him credit for. He knew he picked up on the captain knowing the name of the revenant as well as the god within him. He gave a slight nod and then turned to Noxus, who was still on high alert with her magic.

“You are sure this is the only way?” he asked her.

She drew a deep breath, allowed her magic to fall away, and then nodded her head.

“Then we will stay long enough to see you off and trust in your abilities.”

The crew started hauling various luggage items onto the ship and even picked up the still-frozen Robert to take him to the hold. It didn’t take long to get the travellers on the ship and ready to depart.

Soon, it was only Magna, Mortis, Derric, and Sylthra left staring up at the ship and its final preparations in silence.

“I’ll look after them, don’t worry.” Said Sylthra softly to Mortis as she stepped from the group.

Mortis remained stoic as the ship finally made its way out onto the river. Sylthra seemed so familiar, yet he had never set eyes upon her before. There had been no elves this far in his kingdom when he still breathed air, so he was not sure where the familiarity came from.

Setting that riddle aside, he looked down at his armour and felt a twinge of anger that his armour had been ruined. As if sensing his irritation, Magna took up his hand. Something she hadn’t done in many months, not since before the adventure with her uncle.

“Come on, let’s get your armour fixed up. No guardian should look as shabby as his age depicts.”

The revenant snorted but allowed the princess to lead him back to the castle.
