Maledictus Terra Book 3: Vetitum Nemus Part 71
Greetings Readers
What a crazy version of hot potato! With thrown, taking heads, and random undead assassins, what could be happening next?
Be sure to read @zakludick's update to see how it all occurred before getting stuck in this update!
Letty, probably due to her feline-like curse, dropped and rolled. The head that had been launched at her was dislodged and came to rest comically on the side of a cheek. Magna hid a smirk before offering a cloth from her healer’s bag to give to Letty.
“No, not stabbed.” Muttered Letty as she placed the cloth to her face. “A vial smashed in my face.”
Blood soaked the piece of cloth, but she didn’t grimace. Instead, she looked at the shrunken head that was staring up at her with a disapproving look. This was all that was left of Barakus the great Lich? How much of his powers had been taken.
A feeling of dread wormed its way through Letulah, and she rounded on Adiran.
“What did you do?” she screamed at him.
“Saved your life. Ungrateful much?” muttered the mage.
“He was all I had keeping my husband alive and now you have reduced him to this?” the woman started to hyperventilate. “Everything I have done is for naught!”
“Calm, woman.” Said Adiran as he rolled his eyes.
“Your age is showing.” Said Magna with a warning to her uncle’s blatant disrespect.
Adiran, realising he was almost channelling his brother, looked up at Adrian and said to Letulah.
“Your husband is safe, as the majority of the lich’s power is in the shadow castle.”
Everyone seemed confused, except for Adrian. He remembered the castle; the place his aunt had taken Mortis to shelter him from a spell that would have destroyed him. But how did Adiran know about it and how did he have access to it?
“What the hell is a shadow castle?’ demanded Letulah.
Adrian stepped forward and placed a hand on her shoulder. Once she was looking at him, he said gently, “Your husband will be safe and Barakus has no way to renege on your deal.”
“Barakus is right here and can hear everything.” Muttered the head.
Adrian walked up to the head and squatted down to look at it. It looked like a shrunken head. He had seen plenty in his uncle’s study before, but none had ever spoken. Those heads had been decorations. The skin was removed from skulls, wrapped around stones, and then heated until they shrunk. The hair had been plaited with those heads, this one had wispy, white hair, that lay in all directions.
This wasn’t just a head. This was an artifact. One that was created from a being. While it hadn’t been a living being, it still had life in it. Or rather unlife. Adrian couldn’t help but give his uncle a side glance. He was unaware that his uncle possessed this kind of magic. This was the darkest form of magic he had ever seen his uncle wield. While it should have terrified him, it didn’t. In fact, it made him a little angry. His uncle was trying to play God.
“Are you all going to just stare at me or is someone going to pick me up!”
And back to you Zak!~
