Maledictus Terra Book 3: Vetitum Nemus Part 79

Greetings Readers

While a spanner has been thrown in Queen Mary's plans, at least one of the parties is able to get a move on.
Be sure to read @zakludick's update to see how that played out.

Gorox and Millmor were the ones who went to procure the rivercraft for the start of their travel. Millmor carried more weight than the Marauder of Vallox Kai, but it didn’t laud it over the warrior.

The two had bonded during the battle of the avatars and had both been sullen when they had been forced into different duties. Gorox had enjoyed coming to Dragonshold again to spar with the Ghoul King and was thrilled that he could take his friend to the Isles.

“So, explain again why the portals won’t work.” Asked Millmor.

“You aren’t a disciple of Kai; it would be like running into a wall while another wall crushes you simultaneously.”

“But Noxus can use the portals, even though she isn’t a disciple anymore.”

“Noxus seems to be a special case. Let’s just say she has a hall pass at the moment.”

Sensing that the hulking warrior wouldn’t tell him anymore. Millmor waved over to the captain that had been described to him. A female, dark-skinned elf who seemed to be missing part of her ear on her right side. She wasn’t hard to miss, seeing as she had a leather belt decorated with several shrivelled ears attached to it.

The message was clear enough that neither of the men felt the need to ask her about her appearance or her grisly trophies.

“Ah! I was told by a guard two brutes would be coming to see me.” She purred, as she set down her drink on a table.

She had been lounging at the only tavern that was close to the river, looking every piece of the pirate persona that she had adopted.

“That’s us.” Said Gorox, ignoring the teasing.

She looked them up and down and looked behind them.

“I thought there would be more of you.”

“There will be. We just came to discuss passage on your boat-” started Millmor

“Ship.” She corrected.

Millmor rolled his eyes and continued.

“Ship then. We are looking for a passage to the Isles for five.”

The captain whistled and looked the two men up and down, her sapphire eyes twinkling.

“The Isles, huh? Interesting. You know I have a rivership, right? It doesn’t go out into the ocean much more than a little way off the coast.”

“Your employment ends once we get to the port safely. I don’t doubt there would be a bonus included if you could procure an ocean-worthy ship once reaching port.” Said Gorox.

The captain stood back and reached into the open window of the tavern. A few seconds later, she pulled a brightly coloured bird out. She sat it on the table, pointed at it, spoke a few words, and the bird seemed to sit.

Perplexed, the two men continued looking on as she reached through the window once more, only this time, she pulled a few sheets of paper and what appeared to be a piece of charcoal out.

Leaning onto the table, she hurriedly scribbled something on the paper, before giving it to the bird. The bird seemed to eat the message and then belch a plume of black smoke.

“Ah…” started Millmor.

Gorox stopped him, bemused by what he was witnessing. The captain sat down once more and took a drink from her mug. Not once did she offer either man a seat or further explanation. Then the bird squawked.

“Who the bloody hell wants to go to the Isles? All disciples can use portals, no ship goes out there.” Spat the bird.

“Look, I have passage for five people who want to go to the Isles. I accept money, not more words explaining why they want to go. Can you do it or not?”
The bird got up, gave an exacerbated head roll, and muttered, “Fine Sylthra Vexbane, I will take your five Isle visitors, but I want a cut.”

“And I want my bonus.”

“I gave you the Duskwither.”

“And I’ve paid it off.”

A sigh exited the colourful bird, and it muttered, “Fine.”

The bird then shook its head, seemed confused, then hopped away from the woman, back into the tavern.

“There, now you have an ocean-faring ship.”

Millmor looked to Gorox for an explanation of what he had witnessed. Gorox only grinned and asked, “How much?”

“Let’s haggle.”

Robert had found sanctuary in the room that had been set aside for him. He was calm here. The screaming sword was far from him, but he still felt the pull of the weapon. It was better than feeling the pull of the beast within him.

Rex had become a close companion since the silver bangles had been placed on their wrists. He had tried to talk Robert through a transformation when the beast within him had reacted. However, their bond hadn’t been strong enough then, and in the end, Robert had woken under the bestial form of Rex, who had no problem stomping out the beast when prepared.

There had been a few instances like this, but with Rex and Millmor’s help, Robert was starting to get the hang of pushing the beast down. However, it wasn’t always easy, but it allowed the forward swordsman to leave the room to live a little again.

He knew the silver bangle on his wrist was nothing more than a stopgap, but it helped. It was something. While he hoped, and secretly prayed, that the Faces of Kai could help him, he wasn’t staking what little of his reputation was left on it. That said, he really didn’t have anything else going for him. This was the last thing left to him.
