Fledgling: Part 87
Greetings all!!!
What a crazy week! From the internet dropping in the middle of my class to being fully booked the following days. I am getting tired. At least the kids love my classes.
Enjoy the update! More inbound on Tuesday!
Everyone gathered in the lounge as the smell of cooking meat spread through the house. Red-Eye and Rubar were lying in the corner, conversing about something in a series of growls no one could understand. The twins were in the kitchen with Aidan, the trio cooking the meat that Fledge had dressed. The time jumper was sitting in the lounge, staring out the window. Kay was doing the same but sat opposite the young man. Her arms were still bare, but someone had added wood to the fireplace, and the fire was keeping the room comfortable.
“Didn’t think you’d be awake yet.” Said Saita as she came into the room.
“And I thought you and your past husband would spend more than an hour together, but that’s neither here nor there.” Came the sarcastic reply.
Bolx snorted and then planted himself next to Kay. Clearly, too close for comfort, as the Fell Dragon tried to shift away, but the large Saith threw his right arm over her shoulders and said, “So, I’m partial to perch, but I never seem to catch any. Any tips you want to give me?”
Kay’s mouth dropped a little before she managed to stammer something that she thought was intelligent enough to pass as a conversation.
“I know they live in fresh water, but I swear humans can’t make up their minds whether they want to use live bait or artificial flies.”
“Oh! Live worms, all the way. Jigs tipped with live bait also work well.” Kay relaxed.
As soon as she did, Bolx removed his arm, instead turning to her to continue a conversation about fishing; no one else seemed to have any interest in it.
Saita entered the kitchen to embrace her red-haired son. She then released him and turned to the twins.
“Martin, Maxine, how good is your Saith?”
“Enough to pass as one, even without tails.” Said Martin.
“And your education?”
“I completed my medical studies with the humans, but I spent a year or so branching into Saith biology. Sis here is pretty much half and half.”
“You want us to pass as Saith.” Said Maxine softly.
“I think I know where I can take you. I can’t take you home. That time no longer exists.”
“Guilty.” A sarcastic comment came from the lounge.
It was answered by Bolx, lightly hitting Kay on top of the head.
“Behave.” He warned before he dove back into the different types of live bait he liked to use.
Martin sighed and looked to his sister. “What choice do we have?”
“You can say no.” said Saita as she leaned against the kitchen counter.
“And where would that leave us?” demanded Maxine.
“I can’t fix the past, but I can give you a future.”
“Where? In this desolate place? There is barely any life here. I don’t even know why you sent us here!”
“To make it easier for me to find you.” Said Fledge from the lounge.
“I didn’t think of that.” Said Saita. “That really makes sense, doesn’t it?”
She turned back to the twins. “I don’t have many direct living family members anymore, but I do have some of my Saith branch that still live. In fact, I believe one of my last grandchildren who knows me still lives. She and Saasha’s daughter’s granddaughter should be very welcoming of you.”
“So, we are to be shunted around like unwanted children?” demanded Maxine.
“I don’t want to drag you and your brother with me to do what I must. After that, I need to take up the mantle of Dragon. What will you do then?”
“What about her?” demanded Maxine, pointing to Kay, who ignored her.
“I…I don’t know yet.”
“When will she be punished for what she did?”
Martin grabbed her arm and gripped it hard until she looked at him. The young man had had the opportunity to dive into the Dragon’s memories while she slept. Likely far deeper than Saita had. While there was a set determination on his face, his eyes were haunted.
“Drop it.” He hissed.
“Like hell I will!”
Saita raised her hands, as if to stop the fight. Before she could open her mouth, a ripple appeared behind her, and a hand wrapped around her face. In the space of two blinks, Saita was pulled through a rift, and someone stepped into her space.
“Oh, not this shit again.” Said Rubar as he got to his feet.
