Fledgling: Part 86
Greetings all
I hope that you have all had an amazing weekend and the week isn't too rough yet Please enjoy this update!
“What did you two do?” asked Kay when she noticed the amount of blood.
“Hunted. Got a buck. Got excited.” Red-Eye grinned.
“Shook it like a hare.” Said Aidan.
“Uh-huh. Gross.”
“I carried back some more manageable pieces that weren’t…uhm…pulverised.”
Kay was reminded of the ache in her belly. She was hungry.
Fledge got to his feet and indicated that Red-eye should show him where the buck was.
“I’ll dress what I can. Maybe we can get a meal started for all of us.”
Red-Eye seemed thrilled at the acknowledgement and bounded back outside. Kay shook her head slowly. She hadn’t seen Red-Eye this happy in a long time. She was so caught up in looking where the Wolven and Fledge had disappeared off to that she didn’t notice that Aidan had come to stand next to her.
She was shocked back into reality when a hand was slipped into hers. She looked down at the blood-splattered child. The very child she had asked Red-Eye to kill to instigate the final fight between her and his mother. Before she could remove her hand from his, he clamped down hard. Not hard enough to hurt, but hard enough to keep Kay from easily getting away.
“I knew you were there.” He said softly.
Kay remained silent.
“You watched from the time corridors. I knew you were there. I sensed you.”
The Fell Dragon remained silent.
“I forgive Red-Eye for following your orders. He didn’t want to. And you? I don’t know yet.”
Kay looked at the blue eyes and refused to look away.
“You and my mother are one. I think I understand that now. You always were. You weren’t opposites. I think…I think everything is coming together now. Everything happened for a reason. You wanted to end the cycle but had no other way than what you were programmed to believe. A Champion and a Dragon needed to kill each other to end the curse the Fell Dragon had become.”
“Kid, you have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You’d think that, but you don’t know what I do. Things Edzeeker thought he could hide from me. I wasn’t meant to exist either. Had a single person shown you kindness, you wouldn’t be here. None of us would be.”
Aidan released her hand and then hugged her tightly. It was an alien feeling to her. She struggled to remember if her mother had ever embraced her. Maybe some of those in her gang? She couldn’t remember.
“I’m not much of a hugger.” She muttered softly.
“You are going to be my mother’s only friend for a long time. Please. Please look after her.”
With that final message, Aidan sprinted from the room.
“What the fuck’s a friend? Can you eat it?” muttered Kay sarcastically.
Bolx and Saita had heard the commotion as Red-Eye and Aidan returned, but neither moved from the bed in their room. There was no danger now, and the time they had was fleeting. Bolx was seeing scars that he would still have to nurse her through, and Saita got to see the raw wound of his missing arm.
“You never replace this.” She said softly as she held the arm across her chest.
“Why would I? Did you see how well the two of us fought out there as a team?” Bolx pulled her closer.
Saita chuckled, realising that the fight had been the reason the man had never replaced the missing limb. She had influenced so much.
They lay together for a long time, listening to the activity of the house increase. Saita wished for this to last, but wasn’t sure how much longer she would have Bolx. She wanted this to last, but knew that these two would come to an end.
“So, Kay…she’s stuck?” asked Bolx.
“I don’t know how she got into my head. She was just there, and I ignored her. Turns out you two form quite a friendship. Something about fishing or something like that.”
“And now what?”
“I…I don’t know. I only thought to return you and Aidan to the right time. Then she came into being, and then the twins…are you sure I sent them here?”
“That’s what they told me.”
“But Brucel’s time is gone. Where would I send two tail-less half-Saiths?”
“I’m sure you have a few contacts here and there. Honestly, they’d likely be safer in our original time.”
“Likely, but not while we were young. I don’t recall them being around.”
“Me neither. I guess you have some work to do.”
“I don’t even know where to start.” Saita turned over and buried her head in Bolx’s chest.
“We have to go home.” Said Bolx softly. “After that, you can think of what to do, but for now, let’s just enjoy what little time we have.”
“I am thankful to see you one more time.”
“And I am grateful that I can still spend the rest of my life with you.”
