Fledgling: Part 85

Greetings all!

I have had a fully packed week with back-to-back classes. Never thought that I would have to go back to teaching instead of working with my passion. At least I still have Ecency to write on and share my love for writing.

Please enjoy the update.

Before Kay could stop him, the boy had snatched the socks from her and was already putting one on her right foot. Kay could count the number of times she had been helped in her life on both hands, so the gesture was alien to her. She was also well aware of this human’s dislike for her. However, she said nothing. She had long been trained to be quiet if she ever wanted to learn anything.

A few moments later, Fledge got to his feet and admired his handiwork. “Can’t have you getting frostbite now.”

“I thought you hated me.” Said Kay instead of thanking him.

Fledge seemed taken aback and then a little crestfallen. He made his way back to where he had been sitting and looked out the window again. Kay was almost sure that he had gone back to ignoring her when he said softly.

“I was mistaken about a lot of things. The woman who I thought was my mother can’t be. The man I believed to be my father had no part in my creation. I believed my entire life I was part Saith, only to discover that I am human. It makes me wonder what else I am wrong about.”

Kay snorted and looked away. “You aren’t wrong about me. I am a monster.”

“Were.”

The word wedged in Kay’s mind. Were. He was right. She wasn’t close to what she had been in the past. She was nothing like she had been in the past. She grimaced.

“That bother you?”

She could hear the sneer in his voice, but didn’t take the bait.

“I was never wanted, and when I was, it was to be a controlled weapon. Too bad that their design was so shit that I couldn’t be controlled.”

“Hey, my mother lied about who I was. Aren’t we a pair of sorry sacks?”

Kay laughed. Not her usual sarcastic laugh, but a genuine one. It surprised her. Fledge was surprisingly easy to get along with.

“So, Saita and the big alien aren’t your parents. Why did you think she was your mother to begin with?” asked Kay.

Fledge’s attention snapped back to her, and he said, “I never told you that I believed Saita was my mother.”

Kay shrugged and said, “What other reason would you have had to help her?”
Fledge’s face was clouded in annoyance, but that dissolved when he realised that Kay must have deduced the answers she had.

“You mean besides the face?”

“I share a face with her.” Reminded Kay.

“Fair enough. My mom…if she even is my mom, had the same limp she had.”

“She doesn’t have that limp anymore.” Said Kay.

Fledge blinked at her, and realisation dawned on his face. There were tears, and then laughter started. A small chuckle, which ended up in full belly laughs that left him gasping for breath.

“Oh my god…I made a fool of myself. Why the hell weren’t you conscious to stop me laying myself bare?” Fledge covered his eyes and giggled. “Fuck. Her limp is gone.”

“Yup. Had her leg replaced. From what I understand, it’s similar to her arm. It’s mechanical but also biological. Less pain, and it functions the way that it should. No limp.”

“I’m a fucking idiot!” hissed Fledge.

“Maybe not. Somewhere, there is a Saita that had you, somehow. Was it only the limp?”

Fledge paused, as if looking through his memories. He touched his left eye and started muttering again. Kay could hear him saying that he was an idiot, and he had been so sure. She cleared her throat, and he snapped back to reality.

“I always thought they were part of the marks that she grew upon her skin, but now I wonder if I was wrong. That they weren’t marks but rather tattoos.” He traced two fingers under his left eye. “There were two thick lines under her left eye. How could I have been so wrong?”

“You were seeing what you wanted to see.”

“I wanted to end being a Fledgling.” He said softly.

Kay didn’t say anything. There were so many times in her life that she had stood at a bridge, or the side of a highway, looking for ways out, but never having the courage to do anything like ending her life. Even as a Fell Dragon, the thought of ending her misery was there, but she had never done it, nor had any of her Wolven.

“Brave thing to try and do.” She said after some time.

Fledge squirmed uncomfortably and looked at her.

“Look, I can’t speak for what happened in your life. I’m not even going to talk you out of not being a Fledgling. I’m not even going to tell you to look at the bright side of life. Life sucks. People suck. End of story.” She looked out the window that he had been looking out of earlier. “However, some chapters deserve to be read. Art pieces are meant to be finished. But it’s not for me or anyone else to decide.”

As soon as the final word left her mouth, the door opened, and a bloodied Red-Eye and Aidan stumbled into the house.

Red-eye looked thrilled that Kay was awake, but before he could bound over to her, she leapt from the chair and held her hands up.

“Nope, you’re covered in blood!”

Aidan laughed and was fully relaxed, despite blood dripping from his hair.

Yes, there will be a redemption arc. The true villains need to be exposed after all.
