Fledgling: Part 80
Hello Readers!
Today is the day that I start explaining how the Heavenly had a hand in everything happening. Get a notebook ready, there will be some time jumps.
Shareik had been surprised when he found out the child had escaped the facility where she had been kept. While he had stressed the importance of keeping her close, the General had shrugged him off. Shareik couldn’t blame him. There were few signs that the Fell Dragon was awakening in this time. There was no need for a champion, not at this time, at least. He had reminded the General that keeping the child close would be to his benefit, and the man had smiled at him.
That smile was nothing short of a horror fest. The wound that the girl had inflicted upon his face had healed, but clearly there had been considerable damage to the nerves in the lower half of the man’s face. While the rest of his face seemed to be grinning, the lower section seemed to sag, almost exposing teeth.
Shareik had left frustrated and annoyed. He knew that while the Fell Dragon wasn’t stirring at this moment, its influence was being felt, and he needed to make sure that there was a champion in place. If not in this time, then in another.
This child had shown promise he hadn’t seen in a very, very long time. Would other versions of her have similar powers?
He knew what he was doing was diving into the realm of time tampering, but he was so sure that she would be the one. She would not only defeat the Fell Dragon but would also become a tame one. Yes! A tamed Fell Dragon would be easier to manage, and that would allow for better control.
Shareik had then left the General with the components of the System that would allow for a Champion to be born. There were strict instructions on how to make it and how to control the Champion afterwards. Shareik hated that the controller module was needed, but too many Champions had turned on their handlers in the beginning, and this was the only way to prevent that.
He trusted that the humans would keep an eye on the developing situation and act accordingly. He needed to turn his attention elsewhere, but knew that he couldn’t get too involved. He was already tampering where he shouldn’t. He needed an ally outside of the rest of the Heavenly, especially these new ones, who worked within the broken cage timeline.
Shareik was one of the first Heavenly born when the first Fell Dragon drew breath. He was one of those who set eyes upon their creators, the Kai, and those who would later become the Dekai. He and a handful of his brothers born at this time banded together and allowed the Kai to believe they were omnipotent and only sought to help.
That was only partially true. They had been born as a side effect of the Fell Dragon. They knew their purpose; it was ingrained in their very being. However, the selfish desires of the Kai left a taint within all of them. The longing to be immortal and unchallenged by anything else. Some Heavenly were able to shake off this desire while others embraced it.
Shareik was on the fence. He had watched the Kai nurture the beast that devoured life force as it travelled to the distant edges of the current universe to feed. It had been so small then, so easily managed. The Kai became complacent, and that started the snowball effect that had created the monster they now had on their hands. The beast had tasted a Kai. Brimming with energy that was alive, unlike the minuscule amounts of energy it was being given at the edges of the universe, a single Kai had filled it. That feeling of being sated was enough to get the beast thinking beyond its nature.
Why be hungry all the time when it could turn on its handlers? Oh, the Kai had tried to redirect it, but to no avail. The beast now knew what it could do and where it could find better food. It would take years of the Kai dying from the wasting disease, through the beast stealing their life force, for the cage to be built. It took so long, in fact, that the Kai and Dekai had already split, those with the knowledge about the beast leaving to be with the Dekai. In their new universe, they had more time, more energy, and the ability to construct the cage.
It took so many lives, and the only reason the Heavenly assisted was because if the beast was contained, it wouldn’t be killed, and they would continue to live. They had guarded their connection to the beast jealously. As long as it had power, they had power.
The cage had been a joint effort of the Dekai and the Heavenly. A way for the beast to remain stationary but still have some power to cull life along the edges of the universe.
The beast had not been pleased. Lashing out and killing anyone who tried to corral it. It had become too strong, and it knew it. It was going to wipe out the Dekai if they didn’t come up with a plan. Desperation on both the part of the Heavenly and the Dekai saw the first components of the System made.
