Fledgling: Part 78

Greeting Readers

Today we're learnign a little more about the reason for the creation of the Fell Dragon and why it was necessary. It has taken Saita years to uncover this information and I felt it was time to share the truth as she understands it.

Fledge’s mind was in turmoil. He had believed his entire life that Bolx had been his father, but now he was even questioning whether Saita had been his mother. He didn’t have any of her abilities, nor could he copy new abilities. He could only travel through time and find specific times if someone knew their exact coordinates. Then there was his ability to share lifeforce.

Rubar was sitting across from him, looking at him in concern. The Vulpine had tried to make the young man feel better about himself, but nothing he could say could fix what had been broken.

Bolx was sitting close by too, not sure what to say to the young man. This wasn’t something that could be fixed, at least not in any meaningful way with the time they had left. Then there were the twins, who were desperate for their parents to acknowledge them, but Saita had no idea who they were, despite being the one to send them here.

Bolx sighed under his breath. While time travel had saved his life multiple times now, he understood the damage it left behind. Martin, Maxine, and Fledge were all lost. The Saith looked up as Saita came from the room that housed Kay. She looked tired and was nursing her wounded arm.

“You should have Martin have a better look at that.” Said Bolx.

Saita looked up at him and gave him a sad smile. “I will. When he decides that he and his sister are ready to talk to me.”

That sad smile was one he hadn’t seen on her face before. It hurt to see it. It brought a question forth before he had enough sense to stop it.

“How long have you been without us?”

Saita didn’t hesitate. “About a hundred years since I last saw you, more for Aidan.”

She then looked around.

“Where are Aidan and Red-Eye?”

“Hunting.” Said Rubar as he got up and stretched. “I stayed to make sure nothing happened to all the wounded parties.”

“I am sorry, Fledge.” Said Saita. “I wish you had been honest with me when we met…”

“There is no other Fledgling that would have helped you. Going back into one’s own timeline is generally not allowed.”

“Matta allowed it.”

“Matta clearly knew something we didn’t.”

Saita felt that that was far truer than what Fledge believed it to be.

“So now what?” asked Bolx.

“You and Aidan go home. We take Red-Eye back. I return Fledge and Rubar. Then, I’m not sure.” Saita sat down next to Bolx.

“You, Kay, and the twins are unaccounted for in that list.” Said Fledge.

“I have an idea for Kay, but as for the twins, I need to talk to them. But first I need to speak to Matta. I need him to unlock an ability that Shareik sealed.”

“Why don’t you just copy the abilities of Red-Eye and Fledge?” asked Bolx.

“Even if I could, which I can’t, I don’t know how to get to places where I need to be. Only the ability that I stole from Edzeeker could do that.”

“Which you used once, in a panic.” Reminded Bolx.

“I know it’s a long shot. I realise that, but my history doesn’t make sense the way that it happened. Too many coincidences. Too many allies and hope given at just the right moment. Someone put them there, and I’m starting to suspect that it was me.”

“Why you?” asked Fledge.

“Because of this adventure. I interfered.”

“How sure can you be?” asked Bolx.

“The twins. Why take them from the same time that Brucel came from?”

“I think you’re overreaching.”

“Regardless, it’s something to do before…”

She paused, and Bolx caught on immediately.

“Before what?”

“I become a Fell Dragon.” She said softly.

If Bolx hadn’t been sitting, he would have collapsed. All the blood left his face, and he felt faint. Saita gave him a few seconds to catch his breath before she explained herself.

“Look, you may not want to hear this, but I’m going to go ahead and explain how I understand everything. The Fell Dragon was originally created to cull life within the universe, as there wasn’t enough space, at least according to the Dekai who made it. When that happened, the Heavenly were also born. They were meant to guide the Dragon in its evolution. No one did the jobs that they were supposed to. The original Fell Dragon got too strong, eating everything within its power. People, time, universes, whatever was available. A cage was created, but it never lasted long because someone somewhere wanted to use the Dragon’s power. The Champion was made to keep the Dragon in line. That started an arms race between Champions and Fell Dragons beating each other, with the aforementioned being forced into the cage after killing the Dragon.”

“Why?” whispered Bolx.

“Because the System hurts Bolx. It has always hurt, you know that. It leads to insanity, and insanity together with power is too dangerous to be left free.” Saita said softly. “Kay was the first to destroy a Dragon and a Champion. She managed to retain her consciousness because the controller module was damaged in her fight with Red-Eye. But she was plagued by voices, her past, and revenge.”

“But why you?” hissed Bolx.

“Because I have nothing else anymore.” She said softly.

Immortality sucks!
