Fledgling: Part 75

Greetings all

A nice small update to get you all in the mood for the weekend. I hope you enjoy!~

“I am miserable. If my mother didn’t want me, she should have just left me somewhere, out in the cold or with a different family. I thought…I assumed that perhaps my creation came from a union that would occur now. Then you, in your despair of losing everyone again, would view a pregnancy with disdain, and that was why I was treated the way that I was.”

“We’ve established that Bolx can’t be your father, but how can you be sure I am your mother?”

“Because I knew helping you would affect my timeline, which meant I was not only traveling within your timeline but also mine.”

Saita hugged Fledge, not knowing what else to do. His entire life was a lie. Was he a future child of Saita, and she made up lies to make their lives easier? How would that even be possible? Had the bitterness of her long life creeped in, resulting in her treating a child like a burden? Why were there so many broken things around her? Why was she the centre of all this hurt?

“I don’t know who I am anymore.” Mumbled Fledge into her shoulder.

“I know who you are.” Came a voice from the door.

Rubar pushed the door open and padded toward Fledge on all fours.
“You’re my littermate, always have been, always will be. Your mother was a strange person, but I don’t think she just abandoned you. I remember her coming to my mother and asking to look after you if she didn’t manage to return. I think…I think if she were able to come back, she would have.”

“I don’t know if I can believe that.”

“Then believe me when I say I don’t want you to disappear. I want you to exist, and if our mother were still here, she would feel the same. She didn’t drag you into the pack kicking and screaming for no reason.”

“But…” Fledge started as he rubbed at his eyes.

“I don’t know where your mother went or what became of her, but that is in your past. You have too much ahead of you.”

Saita sat in silence for a while before asking, “You said you came into your powers late in life. How so?”

“We were visited by a Heavenly.” Said Rubar.

“We?” queried Bolx.

“Well, Vulpine generally don’t have the skills that the Wolven had. I had genetic links to Red-Eye, so there was a chance, but in order for me to use my abilities, I needed access to a Fell Dragon. There were none left, so younger, less experienced Dragons were made.”

“Ah! Now I understand the Fledgling title.” Said Bolx with a nod.

“A Heavenly unlocked my ability to open rifts and awoke Fledge’s ability to walk through time, dimensions, and universes.”

“That’s a heck of a skill to have.” Said Saita.

She sat back with a sigh. While one of her problems had been solved, so many others were starting to be revealed. Bolx and Aidan would get to go home, but what about the twins? What about Kay? What about all these things that she had supposedly done to pull people from their different times?

She couldn’t travel time anymore, not like she had when she was younger. But the ability was there; she just needed it unlocked. She needed to speak to Matta. There were clearly things she needed to do, and her work wasn’t done yet. She may adventure a little longer with Fledge yet.

“Saita?” asked Bolx.

“You and Aidan are going to go back. It’s going to be a rush, shocking, and amazing.” She said as she smiled at him. “You’re both going to have amazing lives.”

She could see that Bolx wanted to beg her to come with, but he also knew that there was no way for that to happen. She had lived this life, and it was now over. She was meant to move on.

She felt her son wrap his arms around her neck and squeeze softly.

“You and I need to have a quick conversation about how to use your half favour. Its colour should have returned by now, and if not, it’ll be soon. That’s how we will know that you can make your wish.”

“But what about you?” Whispered Aidan.

“I had my life with you. It’s time for you to go back to ensure that it happens the way it should.”
