Fledgling: Part 73
Hi Readers
It's been a tough week after losing Vox, and the mischief is in disarray. We are doing what we can with treats and lots of love.
Please enjoy today's update.
“We don’t ask for this life.” She said softly. “I don’t know why Kay turned out this way, but she said she moulded me to be her suicide weapon. What creature that delights in the death and destruction of others would have need to create something to kill them?”
The room fell silent.
“She said she had a father who beat the feelings out of her. That it was better to use and be used. She is a Dragon of Want. She was created this way.”
“And that’s an excuse?” demanded Maxine.
“I don’t know.” Said Saita as she continued to look at the injured Dragon. “But I know that Aidan is correct. We’d be no better if we left her to die.”
“Well, I am not limited by those feelings.”
Maxine pushed passed Saita and seemed ready to end what Jackal had started, except she stopped when she realised that Kay was looking at her.
“Well, go on.” She said softly. “Don’t worry, it’s what I want, and you’ll be doing the world a favour.”
The wind was taken from Maxine’s sails, and all the colour drained from her face. This wouldn’t be like killing an enemy. This was murder, and she couldn’t bring herself to do it.
“Go on. One shot. Right here.” Kay sat up weakly and tapped where her heart was. “If you do it quickly, I won’t even suffer.”
Maxine turned green and fled the room. Kay looked like she wanted to yell after her and rather collapsed onto her side and looked at Saita with no expression on her face.
“Why was I your suicide weapon?” asked Saita.
“Because it could only be one of us that could, and you were the last.”
“Do you still want death?”
“Better than redemption.”
Her focus seemed to become unfocused for a second before it reformed on someone behind her.
“I guess those fishing trips won’t be happening now, knowing everything.”
Saita spun to see Bolx behind her. He placed a hand on her shoulder. He gave it a squeeze and then directed her away.
“Let Martin do what he can.”
Meanwhile, Fledge stood by the window, ignoring everything that was being said. This was the perfect opportunity to speak to the royal pair, but he needed to make sure that they were alone. He had given Martin as much power as he could spare. He waited until Red-Eye and Martin returned and then left the room.
Maxine had hidden herself somewhere in the house. Aidan seemed preoccupied with Rubar. And of the royal pair, there was nothing.
“Where did Bolx and Saita go?” asked Fledge.
Rubar looked up at Fledge with a frown. “Are you really going to go through with this?”
Fledge wasn’t sure when Rubar had figured out his plan, but he was grateful that his old friend wasn’t going to stop him.
“I must. I am tired.”
A look of sadness crossed Rubar’s face, and he said, “You are my friend, so I won’t stop you, but know that my life will be empty not knowing you. Mother welcomed you as a pack member. Was our family not good enough?”
Fledge looked away, saying nothing.
“I won’t stop you.” Said Rubar as he turned his attention back to Aidan. “They went outside. I have a feeling that they wanted a moment alone.”
Fledge turned and left to find Bolx. He was the one he desperately needed to speak to. Whether Saita was there or not, it didn’t really matter. It didn’t take him long to find the pair having a hushed conversation. Bolx was clearly unhappy with what had happened, and Saita was unable to give him the answers he desperately wanted.
“There will come a time in your future when I won’t be myself. It will be hard, but I want you to understand it isn’t her fault. She is as broken as the rest of us. Be her friend. Promise me that you will do this. I know it’s an odd request, and it’ll be difficult for you, but please. Do it for me.”
Bolx shook his head, unable to believe what he was hearing. A separate entity had been locked up in his wife’s head, and that entity was the Fell Dragon. He then paused. His wife.
She had accepted his acceptance. Had worn the proposal gift even after he and Aidan had been declared dead. She had lived through Saasha and Brucel dying to capture Red-Eye. She had used that to find a way to face off against the creature that now lay in the room behind them. She had done all of that alone, frightened, and mourning.
She hadn’t even asked for the creature to be placed in her head, and she sure as hell didn’t ask for it to be given a body decades after its death. Saita had asked for none of this, and she was even forcing herself to defend the beast that took everything from them.
He was angry, he felt betrayed, but he had no one to blame. He sighed heavily and pulled her into his arms. He desperately wanted to change the topic, so he asked the first thing that came to mind.
“What did you name the twins?”
“We named them together. You came back. This whole adventure was to find a way to get you back. I needed Red-Eye to show me how Aidan disappeared. He couldn’t do that without being in an era that had a Fell Dragon. That’s how this whole mess started, and Kay was born or reborn. I just wanted you to come home.”
“To a time that you can no longer enjoy.”
“I have already enjoyed it.” She said firmly. “Aidan needs to make the wish and soon, if the six months are nearly up. It needs to be similar enough to mine to make sure that it works.”
“Excuse me.” Interrupted Fledge.
What is Fledge to say now?
