Fledgling: Part 72

Hello Readers

I hope you love today's update. I'm not much for chatting today. I lost Vox yesterday, and my heart is shattered.

He wasn’t exactly furious, but the look on his face showed that he needed answers. Saita took a deep breath. There was only so much she could tell him without outing Kay for who she was or telling them too much about their own future that is to come.

“It’s a long story.” She said.

She spent the next hour explaining what they had been through. The longer she spoke, the more horror-filled Bak’s face became. He had already guessed that Saita had had to face the Fell Dragon alone, but knowing that the spark for that had been his and Aidan’s supposed murder was too much. He hated that he couldn’t be there for her. He hated that she felt the only way to deal with her pain was to throw herself at the Fell Dragon.

Then she dropped the bombshell that made his stomach drop. She had done all of this knowing that she was pregnant. Pregnant! He had been so careful, even if she hadn’t. He couldn’t believe that he had once more been in a position where his love had hidden a pregnancy from him.

“Don’t give me that look.” She said with a frown. “I didn’t even know I was pregnant until a few weeks after you were declared dead. It wasn’t supposed to be possible, remember?”

She looked over to where Maxine sat, “We also had twins, but not like these two.”

Maxine looked away as Saita went on to describe twins that she had borne.

“You two don’t have tails.”

“They were removed when we were born to protect us from Brucel. The more human we appeared, the better.” Said Maxine.

“And what are you doing here? How did you find Bolx and Aidan?”

“You brought them here. You may have even sent Brucel back to our time.” Said Bolx.

Saita chuckled and shook her head. “No, I didn’t. I couldn’t even travel time if I wanted to. The knowledge is locked in my head. I had to adventure with Fledge, Rubar, and Red-Eye just to get to this point.”

“And what about this Kay?” asked Maxine.

Saita fell silent. She wasn’t sure how to explain what had happened. She had guarded the secret of having Kay with her for so long. Yet, Bolx knew about her, formed a friendship with her. Did she tell him who Kay was?

“It’s difficult to explain.” She started.

“What the actual hell!” demanded Martin as he stepped from the room he had disappeared into.

The room fell silent.

“I could almost understand why you had Red-Eye at your side. It made sense, but her? Why the hell would you have the Fell Dragon with you?”

The room fell silent. Saita was almost angry. Clearly, Martin had tried to figure out who Kay was and had invaded her thoughts, discovering her identity.

“Do you know the damage she has done to time and space? The damage she has done to us? To you?"

The tension in the room increased, and Bolx looked at Saita as if she had betrayed him. She almost felt as if she had. The Fell Dragon had taken everything from him, time and time again. Even if Kay wasn’t the one who took from him directly, her line did, and it shattered Saita to see Bolx looking at her like that.

Before she could say anything, Red-Eye walked into the room, showing his full height. He growled and stood there as all eyes fell upon him.

“You think Mistress wanted this legacy? You think she wanted to eat universes to survive?”

He snapped his attention to Bolx. “Your time was destroyed by the one before her. I was there!”

He then turned to Martin. “Yes, she destroyed your time, sent me to do what was needed. But none of you can understand. No, you don’t want to understand.”

His lips were pulled back, revealing his teeth. He was defending his mistress. She had murdered countless lives in her time as a Dragon, but it wasn’t her fault. They had made her into this for a purpose that was archaic and broken.

“I refuse to help her any further.” Said Martin.

The situation was quickly spiralling, and Saita needed to step in and do something, but the look of betrayal on her husband’s face was too much for her. Then, the solution to the problem came from the youngest of the group as Aidan stood up.

“Leaving her to bleed out and die is likely something she deserves, but wouldn’t that make us as bad if not worse than her?”

Martin’s face fell. He knew his brother was right, but this was the Fell Dragon. The creature that had torn through so many times, dimensions, and universes. They couldn’t let her live.

“It is not up to us to judge her.” Said Bolx softly.

That surprised Saita.

“I don’t know what kind of deal you have with this creature, Saita.” Said Bolx softly. “But I know that you have been alone for a very, very long time, and there have always been reasons for you to do certain things.”

He looked up at Martin. “The situation isn’t ideal, but do what you can.”

“But…”

“Tell us why you protect her.” Snapped Maxine, interrupting her brother.

Saita knew that the question was directed at her. It was a difficult question. Kay dying would be no skin off her nose, but allowing her to die because of her past was something that Saita couldn’t allow. Saita could very well have become Kay if Kay hadn’t taken the steps to break the cycle. Even if Kay had made sure that they had reached here safely, how could Saita defend everything that the Fell dragon had done?

She sighed and got to her feet. She pushed passed Martin and Maxine and went to the room that held the Fell Dragon. She looked to be asleep, but her skin was snow-white, littered with surgical scars. Kay had been through her own hell, a hell that had shaped her into the creature that had eaten time and space. She hadn’t wanted this.

“Did you go into her mind?” Saita asked Martin.

The young man tried to stammer an answer, face glowing.

“What did you see?”

“Death, destruction, hunger.” Martin seemed to shudder with the last word.

I hope you all enjoyed that.
